Fondest Greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely sunny Tuesday morning.

 Well I’d want to take over the Station for the whole day to tell you all about the wonderful Aubane Centenary Celebrations at the weekend. It got off to a good start on Friday night with a gala Dinner Dance at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney. On Saturday night the launch of the Book , by Barry Keane on the famous Moonlighter, known as the BARD. It was held at the GAA Hall and drew a very large crowd. Many of his grandchildren were present to see the honours being bestowed on their humble granddad who did so much to set Ireland free. The book is a must,would also make a wonderful gift Christmas or any occasion.  And it is on sale at our Wordsworth Book store.

Sunday brought more joy, more meeting of people from as far away as the US of A who came just for the occasion. There were hugs and kisses and tears of joy and of grief. At 12 noon a talk on the Butter road was given by Jack Lane at the Kerrymans Table.

Mass was celebrated at one o’clock in the specially erected Marquee, by their own Fr. James McSweeney assisted by his uncle Fr. Eustace.

The parish Choir attended and people from far away places were invited to do some of the readings. The oldest one there was the sprightly 97 yr old John Murphy, formerly of Tullig. Now living near Cork City, and Petie Moynihan left his hospital bed to be there. The Mass was followed by the unveiling of a special memorial plaque and the planting of a tree. Then the most beautiful food was served by O Leary Butchers, and topped up with lashings of home baking including a cake made to look like the school made by the newly married Mrs. Buckley, Lackadota.

The roll books were on display and also panels of old photos and books by the Aubane  historical .

Then they put on a stage show depicting the first days of the school a hundred years ago when the late Jimmy O Connor, Gurranedubh was the first one in.

After that there was a wonderful recital of well known songs given by the group who used to compete in the Tops of the Parish in the 80s. Events  went on until late because nobody wanted to go home. Then to wind up their wonderful celebration they all met at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Sunday night for a final singsong and more stories and reminiscing.

God bless the people of Aubane they are keeping rural alive and on the map,  So many of them told me that they keep in touch with home through  our website and radio. It an important life line for them, and it is our privilege to provide it for them.

LTV 2 camera crew Sean Radley, Wm FitzGerald and Bernard Crowley were there to capture it all on film as they do at all important occasions. And Geraldine Dennehy was busy with her camera. I know I’m going on too long on this, but the weekend did belong to Aubane. They want you to know that they are now taking bookings for the Centenary DVD which cost ten euro and the Centenary Celebrations book is for sale is Five Euro. Phone John on 086-1942161 to get both. Our Macra Group held a very successful fundraising Race night at Corkery’s Bar on Saturday night,

 

Our Pipe Band was busy at Beal na Bleath for  the Michael Collins memorial  on Sunday  where our Taoiseach, Enda Kenny delivered the oration.

And our own  Joanne O Riordan was down in that direction also where she officially opened the Timoleague Harvest Festival.

IRD Duhallow held a very successful exhibition of “Tools of the Trade” yesterday and on to-morrow Wednesday they have an information seminar on their Apprenticeship System at 8pm. Contact them for details at 60633.

Sport.

Millstreet incurred a defeat to Banteer in the Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship semi final in Meelin. And Millstreet lost out narrowly to Robert Emmets to a semi final to the U21 Hurling Championship played in Millstreet last evening.

Upcoming Millstreet face Lyre in the Duhallow Junior A Football Championship semi final in Dromtariffe on Saturday next with a 7pm throw in.
