The weather was kind over the weekend to allow all the many outdoor events to go ahead, while the tail end of Hurricane Helena made her presence felt on Monday evening. The darker evenings fill us now with thoughts of night classes and hobbies and cosy chats and discussions. As well as places where you can work out, keep fit and stay healthy.
Last night our Active Retired group held their annual registration meeting at the Parish Centre and it was very well attended. It was followed by Mass at 7.30 celebrated by Fr. Paddy O’Byrne. Their Chairperson is Mary McSweeney, Kit O’Sullivan Secretary, and Eileen O’Riordan Treasurers.
On Tuesday of next week, September 25th some members of our Active Group will join the Castlemagner Group for a four day conducted trip to Carlow.
Our friends from our twin town in Brittany, Pommerit’le-Vicompte, arrived into town on Saturday to a warm welcome. And following an action packed week, a grand dinner dance will be held in their honour at the Wallis Arms Hotel, on Friday night. Michelle O’Keeffe attends the store and she will fill you in on all the details. Its all aimed at better food, less waste, less litter, more value for money.
Friday next, September 21st is Culture Day and our town has great plans to celebrate it in style, starting off with a Pipe Band recital in the Town Square at 7pm. Followed by a Super Vintage display plus exhibitions, dance performances, Trad Sessions in McCarthys Bar and the Clara Inn. Bingo in the Bush Bar at 9.30, Quiz in Corkerys and 45Drive at Tarrants. Our Museum will be open to the public from 5.45 to 7.15. Illustrated Talk at 6.15. Gramophone Circle from 8.15 to 10.15 in the Canon O’Donovan Centre.

An important meeting of the organising Committee will be held at the Wallis Arms Hotel tonight at 8.30. All interested parties please attend.
A very successful Community Council meeting was held last Tuesday night and it was attended by delegations from both the Men’s Shed and the Active Retired Group,. They needed support from the council to provide a Bowls Rink for the area. The idea was welcomed and the Chairman assured them of full support. Further meetings on the subject will be held.
The popular Text Alert scheme is due for renewal, and the annual meeting with the Gardai will be announced at a date yet to be decided.
A monster Coffee Morning in aid of Marymount Hospise Organised by Stokes Solicitors will be held at the Aroma Cafe this Thursday from 10.30 to 12noon.
Our Church choir has choir practice is on every Wednesday night at 8 in the Parish Centre. New members welcome. No previous experience needed.
Our Community Singers will be back on October 4th for 8 weeks.
Craft classes started at the Adult Learning Centre on Monday night and will continue for 8weeks from 7-9 . There is still time to join.
The popular knitting group will resume on Tuesday nights from 7-9 ,at the same venue.

Wild fruits took a battering in the past 24 hours but the succulent hazel nuts are there now for the picking and also crab apples which go to make that lovely crab jelly, and people are still enjoying this seasons wild mushrooms after an absence of many years.
