Storm Gareth is venting its feeling on the world outside as I sit to write my weekly account of local happenings. So far the weekend weather has seen wild winds, heavy sleety downpours and the thunder and lightening left many without power. So the yellow warning still exits and it would be advisable to heed its message. But there’s always hope and the sight on our web today of a mother sheep and her two woolly lambs enjoying new life in Carriganima would give rise to anybodies spirits. Buíochas le Dia.
The people of Rathmore were lucky with the weather on Sunday when they went ahead at 1.30 with their St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We will be asking for clemency in the weather also on Sunday next when its our turn to pull out all the stops in honour of our Patron Saint Patrick himself. The organising committee are working hard on their preparations but it takes every man, woman and child to give the annual event the support that it deserves.
People are asked to decorate their premises in traditional style and there will be a special prize for the best window as well as for the many features taking part in the parade. The Parade will be held in the Town at 5 pm on Sunday March 17th. Assembling at Noel C Duggan’s car park Station Road(By Kind permission) for a five o’ clock take off sharp. It promises to be great with prizes going for Best Cultural Presentation, Best Vintage, Best Window, Best Group/Club.Best Look a Like, Best Float, Best Fleet and everybody is asked to come out and take part to make it a great day for all in honour of our Patron Saint.
The monthly meeting of the Community Council will be held at the Wallis Arms hotel tonight to make final plans for the Parade will be the main topic for discussion. The Millstreet Vintage Club will hold an Honorary Vintage Run on Sunday March 24,in memory of the late Johnnie Hickey who was the founder of the Club some years ago and it has been going from strength to strength ever since.Their trip will take to the highways and byways of Muskerry and Duhallow, stopping for refreshments here and there and arriving home to the Wallis Arms Hotel for dinner at the journeys end. Well done to the popular Mary Buckley, Laught on her wonderful appearance on television last Thursday with Daithi and Maura on their Afternoon Show. Mary acquitted herself well and her story and talents endeared her to many.
The Aubane Social Club are to be commended on their very successful Tea Dance which they hosted on Sunday afternoon. A feature to be repeated again in the name of hospitality and rural interaction. Just the thing to beat the dreadful depression which was inflicted on many by the strict drink driving laws. And don’t forget the Aubane Centre Fitness /exercise classes, with instructor Tomas starting this Thursday March 14th from 8-9.
Many congratulations to the parents in the Crystal Swing family on celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. The celebrations were attended by our two Sean’s. Sean Radley and Sean Murphy. Believe it or not, their first appearance on TV was made on our Local TV station LTV2. Alas now consigned to history.

The Season of Lent goes on, and there are special events being held in many places to coincide with it. A conference for young Catholic Adults aged 18 -40 entitled “Do Not Be Afraid” will be held on March 30th at the Dominican Retreat Centre in Cork. Contact Fergal 087 7914975 or Susan 087 2414635.
Eucharistic Adoration continues every Tuesday and Wednesday in Millstreet ‘s Adoration Chapel, from 10.30 am to 10.30.pm and in Cullen on Thursdays from 10.am. Pieces of paper are provided where people can write their requests and place them in the box at the end of the Church. This box will be put into the Adoration Room and your requests will be included in the prayers of all who worship there. Confessions in Millstreet Church every Saturday from 12.30 to 1 and many times after any Mass. Masses at usual times this week and Friday evenings 7.30 will be preceded by the Stations of the Cross.
In spite of wind and weather, the Cullen Special Needs association closed their 34th annual Weigh In. in grand style. With the final weighing and collecting of the all important proceeds. For the first time a husband and wife team lost the most weight. Bill O Sullivan. Kiskeam lost 37 pounds and his wife Michelle lost 31. Breda Fitzgerald, Millstreet came second at 26 pounds, joint third Eileen Murphy, Shanaknuck and Cris Hickey MountLeader, 15 pounds , Mike Doyle, 25 pounds and Jimmy Collins 24 pounds.
Most money was brought in by DD Murphy €650, Pat O Connor, Doon €360 and Mary Forde €265. Many more smaller amounts came in and the committee can take a well earned bow at the close of yet another highly successful venture in aid of their Special Needs association.
Tech Works Festival will be on at the Green Glen Arena this Saturday the 16th March.
