THE past year saw Millstreet maintain a positive image with numerous highlights and in the concluding of a four part series, an appraisal of October, November and December reads

OCTOBER

LTV community television returns on air. Harvest Mass celebrated in Cullen. Living Scenes project involving second level students and older adults is underway in Millstreet Community School. Millstreet tidy towns and tourism association acknowledged the contribution of private dwellers and business in their popular local best frontage competition.

Millstreet stages 28th National dairy show on its return to the spacious Green Glens Complex.

Pipe band maintains a busy schedule of events and a hectic programme continues. Families journey to Millstreet for the Owners Pony and Young Riders Charity Show in the Green Glens International Complex. Audiences revel in yet another fantastic array of productions presented at the Banteer based Glen Theatre.

The autumn series returns and patrons are treated to no less than 3 superb productions at the popular venue with a key Millstreet input.

Aubane social club fancy dress party in the Wallis Arms Hortel supports Millstreet Community Hospital, Aubane social club and Millstreet Christmas Fund. Strong Millstreet representation compete in the Dublin City Marathon.

NOVEMBER

Ceremony of Lights remembers deceased members of community. The Self-Build, Extend and Renovate Show returns to Green Glens. A War of Independence hero acknowledged in Millstreet with the 5th annual commemoration taking place in salute of Paddy McCarthy with guest speaker Cllr Rebecca McCarthy.

Tom Murphy Jnr and Colin Moynihan capture Junior section of Irish Forest Rally Championships driving a Peugeot 205 GTI. St. John’s GAA club host inaugural social in the Killarney Heights Hotel. Aubane Historical Society release another publication titled “A Millstreet Miscellany(4)”, their 100 publication that began in 1985 and ranged from book to pamphlets over the past twenty five years.

Battling Millstreet produced a gutsy showing only to come up short on a dramatic defeat to Mallow in the Co. U16 A Football Championship Final. Millstreet Development Group coordinate a shoppers week.

Jerry and James O’Leary with their award winning spiced beef. Ballincollig’s Des O’Grady to contest the next general election for Sinn Féin in Cork North West following a selection convention in the Wallis Arms Hotel. Regret on death of young Moya Murphy.

DECEMBER

Harpist and singer Marina Cassidy heads spectacular international line up at special benefit evening for children in Drishane Castle chapel. Aine Collins selected by Fine Gael to contest general election. Millstreet Community School TY perform play “Lovers at Versailles”.

Millstreet hospital fund 45 Card Drive and other events fall foul of sub zero temperatures. Millstreet capture double titles in Duhallow Scór na nOg Finals. Herlihy group take over Centra outlet at West End. Juvenile GAA pays tribute to its sporting heroes at a victory function in the Wallis Arms Hotel with divisional triumphs feted by county stars Donncha O’Connor, Paudie Kissane and Seán Óg Ó hAlpín.

Cullen Young at Heart welcome patrons for Annual Mass and Party. Cullen and District Friends of the Handicapped gather for annual party. Aubane community stage annual party with santa availing of a fire engine to beat the weather. Winter wonderland is evident with record freezing conditions reach -17 Degrees Celcius.

Arctic weather dampens shopping and special festive events with lack of water in dwellings adding to problems. Large turnout for Christmas religious celebrations.

The winter weather limits annual Mushera mountain climb on Christmas Day morning. Thaw sets in with subsequent burst pipes adding to difficulties. A night of stories and songs Around the Fireside takes place in Aubane.

The popular two day Millstreet Coursing meeting draws big attendance to Millstreet Town Park Millstreet pipe band play their traditional engagement on New Year’s Eve.
