You always appreciate the good day better if it comes after a bad day. That goes for lots of things in life and indeed it also goes with the weather. This lovely warm sunny Monday is so welcome following the wet, dreary, weekend. We didn’t expect this gift of sunshine and when it came you want to do a million things that you have lined up in anticipation of it. I didn’t think I’d spend so long working in my garden today but as we all know that if you have a few minutes work to do out of doors it usually takes much longer than you planned. You don’t count the cost if you can get the thing finished. I’m very pleased with myself, having ventured off out into my patch to catch up with some things that have driven be almost to despair for weeks. Looking out at them in the rain. By now I’m sure you appreciate the love that I have for my beloved Phormiums. Above everything else in the garden they give the best service. Stormy wet days are no bother to them, as they’re lashed this way and that. Their ribbon-like foliage effortlessly twisting and turning and flapping. The punishment of the elements doesn’t even show when the calm returns again, while others fall flat and damaged. Needless to say they do need a little TLC. now and then and today was my opportunity to let them know how much I care. Pampas grass and Phormiums are related I’d say and have to be treated in a different way to other garden dwellers. Some of my friends wait for the dry spell to set fire to them, the flames reaching down to burn away all the dry matter ,to make room for the new growth and it works very well for them. But in my situation, a blazing inferno on the edge of a very busy road would not be very practical to put it mildly, further to that where do you go for a dry spell. Anyway I made no delay in attacking the task by hand in the brilliant sunshine and pulled away all the dead matter to give the new growth every chance of surviving. I‘m very proud of the finished article. To see my plants all cleaned up and the roots devoid of the mucky debris. They can breathe now again and are open to the lovely sunny day. Buíochas le Dia.
Still with things of the earth. I paid a long overdue visit to the lovely tunnel at the back of our Adult Learning Centre (off the Main Street) one day last week. The Adult Learning Centre is a multi functional institution where people of every race, colour, gender or ability can go and where they will get help to improve their lives. Be it in learning to read and write, or a language, Computer studies, art, etc. Marie Twomey is in charge and the tunnel at the back is just one other item on the list where people are schooled in the art of growing food and also to preserving the overflow for use in the off season. A team of volunteers see to it that all indoor plants are fed and watered and they are very strict on the organic system. Jerry O’Mahony and Ivor Horton were there when I called. I got a detailed tour of their work. Some plants hugging the ground while others were up to the roof. Peas, beans, tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, herbs, courgettes .beetroot, sunflowers hops, all thriving away almost unnoticed in a quiet part of our town. It is beautifully laid out, even a few raised beds to make the work easier for some volunteers. The bottom line of course, being the importance of growing our own. Long may the good work continue and flourish. Many thanks to those who made me feel so welcome.
Some things never go away and I was asked to mention again the danger of scammers. Some people have received very dodgy messages in recent times. The caller even fooled one lady to stay on and talk to them, but T.G. did not give any details. But on checking with her bank it was found that three attempts were already made to draw money from her account but failed. She was lucky to escape. Please be careful.
The monthly age-friendly chat session will be held at the Library on Friday next from 11am to 1. All Welcome.
A great number of our Active Retired people welcomed the return of Yoga at the Canon O’Donovan Centre of Friday last from 3 to 4pm. Next week being the last Friday of the month, they will have tea & scone at 1.30 followed by Bingo. Until 3. Yoga will return again the following week.
At Fridays gathering there was a great “bualadh bos” for the lovely Joan Wall who celebrated her 95th birthday since we last met.

There’s a message on the Mass leaflet this week by Our Bishop Ray Brown, thanking all those who went or who helped in any way to make this year’s Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock the great success that it was and went on to say that next year’s date is likely to be August 23rd 2024.
Our best wishes and prayers go out the anybody who is sick in the parish , those in Hospital or worried about their health.
With reference to all the recent deaths on our roads, a little prayer to our Angel Guardian would not go amiss before setting out . “Oh Angel of God my Guardian dear, To whom God’s Love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side, light and guard to rule and guide.” Amen.
