The recent development at the Boeing was further enhanced at the weekend when a special plaque and seat were added in memory of the popular late Eileen O’Riordan, Dromsicane beloved wife of Francie, whose first anniversary occurred recently. Eileen was not a native of Millstreet, but she endeared herself to many during her all too short time here. Following the 11.30 Mass at which she was remembered and prayed for her family and friends made their way to the historic crossing of the Blackwater known at the Boeing. In advance of the day, her friends and neighbours had constructed and Rest Area overlooking the gentle and often raging waters of the Blackwater River. The memorial plaque reads ,”Sit for a while and remember her smile, Gone but not forgotten.” Eileen O’Riordan and there it remains for us all to use and enjoy. The perfect place where you can go alone or in company. I went there one day when it was still in the development stage and sat on the only seat that was there at the time. Listening to the gentle flow of the water admiring the overhanging branches dipping their toes and dancing to it’s movement a place of tranquillity and peace. Gives the mind an opportunity to slip away from the affairs of modern life. I am yet to see the new development, but I can see it as a place where people like myself and my equals can go there for picnics singing sessions or of course to pray. But not just for the likes of me but for everyone to savour in their own way.
It only goes to show how a few caring people can make a difference. I’m loathe any time to mention names at the risk of leaving someone out, but I know that Mary and Teddy Collins are worthy of mention. From the outset they were passionate about getting this dream made into a reality and God gave them the gusto to do it with the help of others. Well done to all involved.
Meanwhile the people of Pound Hill have to ‘walk on the dark side’ since storm Agnes put out their lights. Needless to say those who live there find it both distressing and dangerous and they hope that the problem will be dealt with very soon. In our day there were no lights in the town and we went our way by the lights of the few shops who left their lights on after closing. Nobody seemed to mind . What you never had you never missed. To have walked a mile or two of an unlit country road, it was to say the least, uplifting to see the lights of a little shop. I will never forget the lights on Maggie Long’s shop window as we came down Pound Hill. Though very dimly lit by today’s standards it seemed like the star from the East to us back then. Further down the street it was Twomey’s Grocer shop and to carry us a little further it could be Phillips’s Bakery window or Tolly’s Haberdashery. By then we’d have reached the Churchwhich always felt such a safe haven. But the journey home was still before us but by then people would have met and all walk in groups full of news and chatter along the way and nobody even noticed that it was dark.
People are wondering when will the ‘tent’ (for want of a better word,) be re-installed in the town Square. It is genuinely missed by some. The unpredictable weather means that we can’t sit out, be it for a chat, have a coffee or whatever, but with the overhead cover the occasion can be continued even in the rain. They want it back.
I was in Cork for a couple of days last week and while enjoying a cuppa with family I noticed secondary school students walking around the streets. On making an enquiry I was told that the Transition year students of the local school go around and pick up the litter once a week. On Wednesdays when they have early closing. They are given the bags and pickers and told the roads that they are to go to. Perhaps it’s an idea that could be applied to other places.

Our Primary School Parents Association are starting on time to ensure that we will have an Eco-friendly Halloween this year and to get the ball rolling they are holding a Halloween Kids Costume Shop at the GAA Hall on Wednesday October 11th from 2 to 4 pm. So don’t go shopping anywhere else before then. Give this lovely idea, your full support.

At a special function which was held at the Bridge Bar recently the Vintage Club presented the Proceeds of a previous Run which amounted to €4,367.75 to the Alzheimers Society of Ireland. Just one of the many such gestures that they have given over the years. Please continue to give them your full support.
Our A.I.B bank will host a Coffee morning at their premises , on Friday October 13th in aid of our local group R O C.( Reach out to Cancer) a local group of volunteers who provide transport for people who need to travel for treatment. Keep October 13 free to support them.
The fine days continue on until late evening at the moment. And its nice to have a last look at the garden before drawing the curtains. My Virginian Creeper is doing what it does best at the moment, as it’s long leafy limbs drape themselves all over everything else in the hedge. Turning them into a blaze of reds and russets for me to enjoy . I think that the little robin likes to see us outside because each time I stroll in the garden it comes along hopping from one branch to the next. AAhh lovely.
