Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1219 from Millstreet . Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this mild sunny, Tuesday morning.
Pardon me if I’m not in my usual cheery mood this morning. By now you all know that our councillor Noel Buckley did not get re-elected to Cork County Council. We were dealt a dreadful blow when we heard it. Millstreet without him. Doesn’t seem right, doesn’t seem even safe. Safe from the ravages of to-days risky and uncertain political world.
While Noel Buckley was representing us as a member of Cork County Council, we knew that help was at hand. We had a father figure who would take our problems on board and bring them to the top table where if anything could be done, then it would. No use in thinking that every problem can be solved but if it could, then Noel would get it done.
Noel Buckley was not confined to Fine Gael. He helped people right across the board. His lovely wife Margaret working with him behind the scenes at all times.
Before he was ever elected to the County Council, Noel worked tirelessly for our Community. His witty ways, his honesty and his dedication to the job, endeared him to everyone.
Some years ago I penned a few lines about him on some special occasion, which ran:
He’s articulate and witty and always on the ball,
You only have to say the word and he’ll answer to the call,
Then he’ll take the mike and speak for us in tones so apt and true,
Or make a snap decision thats just right for me and you.
He’s in our Parish Council since it started years ago.
And often occupied the chair as the Council Chain can show.
He used this top position with distinction and with grace,
And spared no time or effort to make Millstreet a better place.
But I know that when the dust settles, that Noel will still use his vast experience to help his people.
And it only remains for me on behalf of our Community to thank Noel Buckley and His lovely wife Margaret and their family for all that they have done for us over the years, and to wish them the best of health and success in the future.
