The heavy rains in recent times left their mark on the outcome of the all important harvesting of grain throughout the land and it was disturbing to say the least to see on the news, how grain farmers are faced with huge losses as a result. On a day out to the Clonakilty area, on a fine day recently, my gaze was drawn to the rolling plains of golden corn waving in the gentle breeze, and now to think that they have all been ruined by recent downpours. Our sympathy and prayers must surely go to all those who had their dreams of a bountiful harvest dashed.
But the Spirit of the farmers is never broken and this week many of them will be flocking to the National Ploughing Match and we wish them a happy outing.
The bad weather over the weekend did not dampen the spirits of the many people who took part in the fundraising events that were held in Carriganima .On Saturday their fun run /walk was very well supported, with the proceeds to be divided between the Millstreet and Macroom Hospitals.
Then on Sunday a spectacular tractor run was held. Not just Vintage but any tractor at all. Again with great results and all the efforts were in aid of the local bus service with they call CART. Well done to all concerned but chiefly to Seanie and Matt at the pub who spearheaded both events.
The monthly meetings of the Community Council resumed at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Tuesday night, following their Summer Break.
The Chairman Noel Buckley presided and was aided by our wonderful secretary Maura Kiely. Derry Sheehan, chairman of the Tidy Towns Committee attended. And he was asked by Noel Buckley to convey the best wishes of the Council to the Tidy Towns Committee on their wonderful success in the Co. Council Anti Litter Challenge. And he also wished them well at the National Final Results which will be held at the Helix in Dublin on Sept 26th.
It was suggested that in future that all the voluntary bodies in Millstreet would liase with oneanother on now and then, on future plans for the town etc,for the common good.

The account of our Astro Turf Pitch was very positive.
Marie Twomey told the meeting that she is about to get a 2017 calendar for Millstreet, compiled and ready for sale well in advance of the New Year. And as always the proceeds will go to local needs.
Further to that Mairead Daly has let it be known that the Womens Christmas Party is booked to go ahead at the Wallis Arms Hotel .and this time it will fall on the 6th of January,2017.
At the registration meeting ,held by our Active Retired Group at the Parish Centre last week over 90 people enrolled. And a long list of outings and other events are on their list for the coming winter/Spring Months.
Dancing has resumed in Aubane every Monday night and in Ballydaly on Wednesday nights. Cards in Ballydaly on Sunday nights .
Community Singers with Marie Twomey, sessions will resume early in October and some members of this group are going on a bus tour to Donegal for four days next week.
Last Friday night a free gala traditional concert was given at the Scartaglin Community Hall by Jackie Daly and Matt Cranich.
And our own Sean Radley was among the lecturers who gave stirring accounts of the music and Cultures of Sliabh Luachra.
It was part of Heritage week. They have plans for similar concerts every month over the Winter/Spring.
The next one will be on October 22nd .

I have a note here from Gillian to say that the Pipe Band wants to say a very sincere word of thanks to all those who supported their Church Gate Collection which was taken up in Ballydaly and Millstreet at the Weekend.
Please continue to help our Tidy towns in their efforts to make Millstreet a better place. And there are notices in our Graveyards, placed by the Co. Council asking people to take there litter home, and leave the place clean and tidy.
And remember that so many of our visitors go to cemeteries to pay homage to their loved ones or to trace some long lost ones .
