When the people of Cork City and County moved into the 1980s, they did so with a swagger. Life was good, there was plenty of employment, and the real Taoiseach had been watching over them for ten years. They felt immune to any crisis.
But the storm clouds of a major recession were gathering. Within eighteen months, Fords, Dunlops and Verolme Dockyard had all closed, with the loss of hundreds of jobs. By 1985, the city was in chaos.
On this week’s Where the road takes me, John Greene meets journalist Michael Moynihan, whose new book – ‘Crisis and Comeback – Cork in the eighties’, has just been published.
