Wonderfully Uplifting Christmas 2024 Message from Millstreet Community Hospital

Christmas in Millstreet Community Hospital is about sharing the joy and spirit of Christmas with the whole community, that’s why we were delighted to be a part of many community events that took place over the past year.

Extending a heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers and organisations who helped us to make it possible.

A special word of thanks to Sharon Lane Parish office and Canon John Fitzgerald, P.P. who helped us ensure the spiritual needs of the residents were met.

Huge thanks and appreciation to the Friends of Millstreet Community Hospital in particular Mary Fitzgerald and Lena Kelleher who ensure our residents comforts are met by continuous fund raising.

The Parents Association Millstreet who have been an invaluable resource to us and form a great link to the community. They organised trick treating and entertainment throughout the year. We are truly grateful for this.

The Eucharist Ministers, Mary Dennehy and Edel Fraser, who bring Communion to the residents weekly. Thank you.

Millstreet Comhaltas Group, in particular Marie Casey and Caroline Lehane have entertained our residents throughout the year lifting their spirits and filling our day room with fun and laughter. Your effort is hugely appreciated.

The Vintage Club have visited to coincide with the switching on of the Christmas lights and it was a real highlight this year to see the cars drive up the avenue  twinkling decorated beautifully. The residents loved it. We also thank them for their generous contribution through fund raising.

Huge thanks to Gillian Gilbourne in Millstreet Library for welcoming some of our residents to the weekly Knit and Natter group and for all her support throughout the year. Our residents look forward to the monthly delivery of books.

We would like to thank Martina Duggan for her time spent in carefully choosing soft furnishings for the new build. You did an outstanding job which has been admired by many.

Many thanks to all the local businesses for their support throughout the year, Centra West End, SuperValu, Colemans and McCauls.

The members of Red Cross who volunteer their service to the residents. The therapeutic hand massage is a highlight each week for the residents.

Carriganima Community Group for fundraising and use of the community bus for resident’s outings. This service is priceless and gives the residents something to look forward to.

Michelle O’Keeffe for visiting the residents with her dog ‘Millie’. Millie, with her gentle nature has become a firm favourite with the residents.

This year we formed a new link with the Men’s Shed. They made a beautiful Outdoor Crib for the hospital, for this we thank ye. A special word of thanks to Jerry O’Sullivan, Cullen, who put so much work into it. It is truly beautiful and has made our residents extremely happy.

Noreen Dennehy and the Community singers visited us recently where they performed many Christmas carols. It was truly beautiful and touched the hearts of both the staff and the residents. We look forward to welcoming them again in the New Year.

Seán Radley has also contributed in many ways to the hospital over the past year. He helped us to create a gallery of photos of Millstreet through the years for the new hospital. His willingness to help at short notice on many occasions is much appreciated.

Finally,  we would like to thank Siobhán O’Leary, sixth class teacher, the Girls school, who visited with her students and entertained us. They played, sang and danced. The work and effort that went into this is hugely appreciated. An extremely talented teacher and group of girls.

We sincerely hope we haven’t forgotten anyone.

We wish you all a very Happy Christmas and Best wishes for 2025.

From:  Geraldine, Maureen and all the Staff of Millstreet Community Hospital. [read more …] “Wonderfully Uplifting Christmas 2024 Message from Millstreet Community Hospital”

Splendid Comedy by Glen Theatre Drama Group Returns in New Year

The Glen Theatre Drama Group hugely successful Comedy is Sold Out for this Sunday, 8th Dec. 2024 but one of the brilliant Cast, John O’Sullivan, indicates that it will return at the Glen Theatre early in 2025.
Written by Ballydesmond writer, the late Seán Buckley, ‘Roger’s Final Farewell’ follows the Johnson household with matriarch Aggie and her two daughters; Hazel and Purdly. They are mourning the recent death of household patriarch Roger. However, his drinking and gambling debts are revealed, throwing the home into disarray. A collection of strange characters in and out of the house, including a confused Irish War of Independence veteran Grandfather, with a ‘strong patriotic devotion to Ireland’, only adds to the hilarious chaos.

St. Francis Xavier Feast Day on 3rd Dec. 2024

St. Francis Xavier Feast Day on 3rd Dec. 2024 is a very special Feast Day to the people of Goa in India.   We extend very best wishes on the important Feast Day to the many people from Goa who are presently resident in Millstreet and in the surrounding areas who especially participated in Sunday’s Mass (with full Choir and Organists) celebrated by Canon John Fitzgerald, P.P..   Tap on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Some of the large number of gentlemen from Goa who attended this Sunday’s Mass.

Goa (Agenzia Fides) – “The motivation is faith. The faithful come here to pray and touch the remains of Saint Francis Xavier, not out of curiosity or for a tourist visit,” said Father Fermino Savio D’Souza, parish priest of the parish of Our Lady of Miracles in Goa, who is particularly involved in youth ministry, to Fides. On November 21, the 18th Exhibition of the Relics of Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552) was inaugurated in the old town of Goa. Such an exhibition takes place every ten years and brings thousands of pilgrims to the city where the remains of the Jesuit missionary are kept. From the historic Basilica of Bom Jesus, where the relic is usually kept in a silver casket, the saint’s remains were brought in a reliquary to the Cathedral of Goa, where it will be available for veneration by the faithful until January 5. The feast of St. Francis Xavier on December 3 is one of the central moments of the exhibition: Masses are celebrated in different languages throughout the day and the faithful crowd the church from the early hours of the morning. “There is a deep devotion to the saint,” says Fr. D’Souza, “who is considered the protector of our country. The faithful come to the saint to entrust their sufferings, travails and joys to him, they come to ask for his intercession. There is a deep popular piety that is experienced not only during this special period of the exhibition but also in ordinary time. It is the faith of the little ones, the simple ones, that is very precious.” “Many pilgrims come from the communities of Goa, but also from other parts of India,” the priest reports, “especially from southern areas such as the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where there is a strong Catholic presence.” “Goa,” he continues, “is also a popular destination for young people: it is a place of parties, music and dance. Because of its countless beaches, it is also popular with European tourists. Tourism has always been the backbone of the local economy: Goa is chosen as a meeting place by young people from all over the world, not just Indians,” the priest continues. “So it is exciting and impressive to see how young people are also getting involved in this spiritual time, which is marked by prayer and testimony of faith: young people formed a human chain to protect the transfer of the relics from the basilica to the cathedral. And when you go to church, you see many young people in prayer and reflection. I would say that this is a time of witness and also of evangelization for the Catholic community in India,” concludes the parish priest. The saint’s relics will be on display in the cathedral for 45 days. On Sunday, January 5, 2025, they will be returned to the basilica in a solemn procession, after which a mass will be held to bid them farewell. The event coincides with the beginning of the Holy Year 2025, which is why the theme chosen for the exhibition is “We are messengers of the Good News” to highlight “the responsibility of every Christian in spreading the message of love, hope and peace in the world.” After the death of Saint Francis Xavier on December 3, 1552 on the island of Shangchuan off the Chinese coast, his body was initially buried there in a simple grave. In February 1553, it was exhumed and transferred to Malacca, where it remained for several months in the Church of St. Paul. In December 1553, it was decided to transfer the body to Goa in India, which was then an important center for Jesuit missions. After arriving in Goa in early 1554, the body was kept in the Basilica of Bom Jesus, where it remained intact and showed no signs of decomposition even after years. It was then publicly venerated for the first time in Goa from 16 to 18 March 1554. One of the most famous relics, his right arm, with which he baptized many people, is kept separately in the Jesuit church in Rome, the Roman “Chiesa del Gesù”. (PA) (Agenzia Fides, 2/12/2024)
