In Aubane Hall

In Mushera valley they do not have a wailing wall
And few things in life seems to phase them at all
Even when St John’s lose in gaelic football
They laugh and sing as they dance in Aubane Hall

The Irish economy is not going well
Though on such a matter they refuse to dwell
In Aubane Hall they dance their cares away
Worry it can wait till another day

For to enjoy your night out you do not need booze
Many healthier and less expensive forms of enjoyment for one for to choose

Strawing in Aubane

Super night in the Valley of Aubane Last night at Aubane Community Centre for the Monday night Dancing…Last night we had Visitors “The Strawboys” There are very few places where the tradition of strawing takes place. It seems to be confined now to parts of Cork and Kerry. In our photo today newly weds Gerard McSweeney and Karen White were welcomed home from their honeymoon by the strawboys.
The history of the tradition of strawing is that strawboys were uninvited guests who dressed up in suits made from straw and paid a visit to the wedding feast in the midst of the celebrations. The average number in the group was about a dozen and all the gang remained anonymous. The face especially had to be well covered in straw to nullify identification. The group last night was made up of ten people. Picture compliments of John F. Kelleher

Genealogy: Buckleys of Knocknakilla

A recently completed research project for me traced my family back to Denis and Ellen Buckley from Knocknakilla, Millstreet, Cork. Going back to the mid 1800’s. Their children born around 1850 are; James, Daniel, Patrick, Manor, Michael, Denis, Edmund and John. The only knew that I know who went to America was Richard my great grandfather who settled in Boston. I am wondering if there are currently any Buckley’s currently residing in Knocknakilla.
I will be in Kenmare the middle of next week and plan on coming to Millstreet probably on Wednesday and would very much like to make contact with any of the family currently residing in the area.

Any assistance you might be able to provide would be immensely appreciated. All the best Jack Buckley – 0873581250.

The Narrow Mountain Roadway

Across so many bridges above river, stream and rill
Up the steep rise from Rylane to Mushera and to Aubane downhill
And on uphill to Tullig the road winds up and down
The back road from Cork City that leads to Millstreet Town.
