Success for Local Rally Crews at the West Cork Rally

Last weekends West Cork Rally produced some great results for some of our local crews that made the trip to Clonakilty to compete in what was a very tough and challenging Event, there were Class Wins for three of our local Crews who competed with Mike P Kelleher/Iarla McCarthy emerging victorious in Class 10 in there Mark2 Escort, Sean Moynihan/Sean Nolan in another Mark2 Escort took the Class 12 Honours while John Murphy/ Eoghan McCarthy came out on top in Class 20 with there Subaru Impreza, there were also some great performances from other local Crews including Denis O`Brien/Ryan O`Brien Opel Corsa who finished 3rd in Class 10 who in turn were followed home by Denis Buckley/Declan Casey in there Ford Escort while Todd Falvey/Peter Falvey in there Porsche 911 were 5th overall in the Historic section on there return to competition following a lenghty break from the sport, unfortunately there was no luck for Dan Kelleher/Gavin Downey Ford Escort who retired with Mechanical Woes late on Sunday while luck also deserted Pat Sheehan/Liam Dennehy Renault Clio and Colin Moynihan/Sean Collins Honda Civic who both failed to make the finish. The Event was won by Donagh Kelly/Conor Foley in there Ford Focus WRC who took a record breaking fourth consecutive victory, Josh Moffett Ford Fiesta was second overall and won the hotly contested R5 catagory while Kevin Eves co-driven by Macroom Man William Lynch won the National Rally in his Toyota Corolla,Barry Jones won the Historic section in his Ford Escort and Kieran Reen in his Honda Civic was the top Junior Competitor.Frequent changeable weather during the Event made for very challenging driving conditions but as always Cork Motor Club led by Greg McCarthy and his hard working Team which included Danny Creedon/Derry Healy Subaru and Conor Falvey Porsche performing 00 Sweeper Duties along the Route Ran a Top Class Rally which was enjoyed by both Competitors and Spectators alike.

We thank Matthew Twomey for the use of his Photos and you can check out more of his photos at https://www.facebook.com/M2merallyphotos/#

The Clonbanin Ambush Play

1921-03-07 Front Page of the New York Times - Report on Clonbanin AmbushSteven O’ Riordan is fundraising to help him complete a newly discovered but unfinished play on the Clonbanin Ambush that has been found in an attic twenty five years after the writer’s death.

The Clonbanin Ambush was written by Cork native Bill Cody, also known as Patrick Vaughan contributor to the Corkman and the initial seeds for this play were sown almost 70 years ago through his encounter with an IRA veteran. It examines the circumstances surrounding a famous IRA ambush of the War of Independence where a large party of Volunteers from Cork and Kerry ambushed a party of British army soldiers in 1921 resulting in the death of the decorated British Brigadier-General Hanway Robert Cumming.

Discovered among Bill’s papers were two copybooks of fascinating historical, dramatic and poetic material dealing with the ambush that lay incomplete at the time of Bill’s death. In this time of seismic Irish revolutionary centenaries the play deserves and demands to be finished to do justice not just to the playwright but to the men who fought and died that day at Clonbanin.
