Mrs Hanna Quinlan, Island House

On Thursday the 9th Inst, the remains of the late much esteemed and deservedly respected lady, Mrs Hannah Quinlan, wife of Mr William Quinlan, were removed from the family residence, Island House, Derinagree, for interment at Dromtariffe cemetery. She died on Tuesday fortified by the rights of Holy Church of which she was a most zealous and exemplary member all her life. The funeral was large and representative, testifying in a striking manner to the popilarity of the deceased and to the sympathy which goes forth to her family in their affliction.

The clergy present were – very Rev. Canon Casey, PP VF Millstreet; Very Rev P White PP Dromtariffe; Rev — Scanlon CC Millstreet; Rev P Keane CC Dromtariffe.

Death Notice: Mary Allen, Dublin & Derinagree

Mary Allen (nèe Kelleher) late of Marley Grange, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16 and formerly of Moher, Derinagree, Co. Cork died on 25th February, 2016, in the tender, loving care of the doctors, nurses and staff at Tallaght Hospital, beloved wife of the late Jack and loving sister of the late Nora, Eileen, Kathleen, John and Con; she will be sadly missed by her daughter Antoinette, son-in-law Philip, adored grandchildren Sarah, Laura, Helena and Daragh, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

There will be a gathering for family and friends, with prayers, on Monday evening, 29th February, from 6pm to 7pm, at Colliers Funeral Home, Old Connaught Avenue, Bray. Requiem Mass on Tuesday, 1st March, at 10am in the Church of the Divine Word, Marley Rise, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16 followed by burial in Mount Venus Cemetery, Rockbrook, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14. Derrinagree National School has been selected by TESCO MALLOW as one of its community funding projects. For the next 8 weeks we will have a cylinder inside the door in Tesco Mallow. At the checkout shoppers take the blue tokens and drop them into their nominated cylinder.
A sum of money is divided between the 3 projects and at the end of the 8 weeks the group with the most votes gets the largest share.

Derinagree NS at Roddy Doyle’s FIGHTING WORDS Workshop

2015-09-25 Derinagree NS at Fighting Words Bookshop in Dublin for a creative writing workshop__rszSenior classes in Derinagree NS were invited to a creative writing workshop at Fighting Words in Dublin last Friday Sept 25th. They had a wonderful experience & returned home eager to put pen to paper!
Fighting Words was established by Roddy Doyle & Sean Love. Roddy wasn’t there on the day of our visit, but the organisers kindly agreed to ask him (nicely) to sign the books we hauled to Dublin!!

Dr. Barry Cotter – First Doctor in Melbourne

Hello to the Millstreet community,

I wanted to let you know that I have finished researching and writing the biography of Dr Barry Cotter, first doctor in Melbourne, Australia, who was born in Millstreet in 1807. The biography is available here, drbarrycotter.com.  I received news this week that The National Library of Australia is going to archive the website into its online collection, so I’m pretty excited about that. Thanks again to the Aubane Historical Society, especially Jack Lane and Alan Brick who were so generous in supplying information.

Clonbanin Ambush

On this day March 5th 1921, the IRA ambushed a British army convoy near Clonbanin, near Derinagree, killing Brigadier General H. R. Cumming, one of the highest ranked British officers to die in the Irish War of Independence. After two hours fighting, 13 (apparently) British were dead, and 15 wounded, while the republicans suffered no casualties.

In early March, 1921 Sean Moylan, Commandant of the Newmarket Column, made the decision to ambush a British party of senior officers and their military guard returning from an inspection tour in Kerry. The position he selected was at Clonbanin, near Derinagree, which was about five miles from Kanturk, where there was a strong military post and five miles north of Millstreet, then garrisoned by a force of Black and Tans and RIC.

At 3 a.m. on the morning of the 3rd. March, Moylan’s column moved out for Clonbanin and was in position by 6 a.m. They were joined by a section of [read more …] “Clonbanin Ambush”

Wonderfully Impressive Knitting Project at Derrinagree N.S.

Derrinagree N.S. organised a superb exhibition of just some of the splendid creations brought to reality by its recent hugely impressive Knitting Project.  This is just one of many images  we shall be featuring on this marvellous Primary School activity where a number of very skilled and creative ladies from the locality have been visiting the school weekly to teach the excellent skill of knitting to the many children at different class levels.
Derrinagree N.S. organised a superb exhibition of just some of the splendid creations brought to reality by its recent hugely impressive Knitting Project.
