IRD Duhallow is holding a Multi-Cultural Christmas Community Party in Millstreet Community Hall on December 9th, from 6pm – 8:30pm
This event will give local children & adults the opportunity to meet new friends, have some festive refreshments and sing Christmas carols. Santa and Mrs Claus will be in attendance. The “Sounds of Advent” concert is on this evening in St.Patricks Church at 7:30pm. The sound in the church this morning was really good with the new sound system installed and adjusted. With two choirs singing (our own Millstreet Choir and the Kerry Choir), it promises to be a very entertaining evening, especially if you had nothing already planned for the evening. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds to the Church Restoration Fund.
The bad weather has held up completion of the GAA schedul in Duhallow. These are the competitions that Millstreet are still involved in:
Millstreet were defeated by Freemount in the Junior B Football championship last Monday Night by 3-8 to 1-6
Killarney soprano and harpist Marina Cassidy has also joined dozens of musicians and singers who will perform at a sell-out benefit concert at Drishane Castle in Millstreet on December 6th for the Baby Jacob Trust.
The Killarney woman became aware of baby Jacob six weeks ago when she sang at the opening of the restored chapel at Drishane Chapel on the invitation of the Duggan family.
“That night, the Duggans were talking about the fund-raising for Baby Jacob and they asked me to be involved in the concert and I’m delighted to be,” Marina said. “There was just an incredible atmosphere in the church that night.
“When I heard about the little baby, I felt I really wanted to be part of it.”…

The Big Concert this week will be in our parish Church on Sunday November 29th in aid of the Church restoration Fund.entitled “Sounds of Advent.” Our own Parish choir will open the two hour show, and they will be followed by the Kerry Choral Society.

marquee in the Square, Millstreet from
17th – 24th December from 12 – 5pm daily
(except on 24th when marquee may close
earlier).
Santa will be visiting The Youth Centre on the 19th and 20th from 12 – 4pm. parents will be encouraged to visit the marquee.

Little baby Jacob has gone through the first operation for his condition anophthalmos and his mother Wiola has written about it on his website:
A few days ago Jacob had his first operation in Germany. It was an emotional experience for us. We were very worried when they were taking him into the operating theatre. I was thinking: he is still so little, how will he take a general anaesthetic?
During the operation, Jacob got his first expanders, which from now on will be stimulating orbital growth. Thanks to a few operations like this one Jacob will be able to receive his ocular prostheses.
When after the operation we were called into the recovery room, I found myself looking at the huge IV catheter inserted into his tiny hand. I was wondering why it is so in this world that children are born sick and …

The Wedding Journal Show is back in the Green Glens in the New Year on the 23rd and 24th of January in the Green Glens Arena. Last year was a very successful event, as is described on their website
It may have been icy outside but the Wedding Journal team’s hearts were warmed by the impressive turnout to the Cork Show. Arriving at Millstreet on January 24th, the two-day show was our biggest Cork event to date, with even more exhibitors and visitors than ever before.
Those in search of a New Year bargain weren’t disappointed either, as exhibitors, from photographers, to florists, make-up artists and bridal stores, offered exclusive rates and opportunities to enter competitions throughout weekend event.

In an economic downturn it is especially important to promote business, industry and shopping in any town or area. Millstreet Development Group has been established with this in mind. Millstreet has always been a traditional market town offering a wide range of goods and services. This is still very much the case. The Group has been established by a number of businesses from the Millstreet area to promote the town.
With Christmas fast approaching, the group has taken out double page advertising features in local papers to remind people just what the town has to offer. It has also set up a scheme which will allow people to buy gift vouchers at the Credit Union that can then be redeemed in any one of over twenty five shops and businesses. They have organised a number of exciting initiatives for Christmas Week which include Carol Singing, Christmas music and lights, and a Marquee in the Square to sell a range of food and crafts. All this is designed to help keep money in the town.
Once Christmas is out of the way, the group hopes to focus on a number of broader issues affecting the town. A major issue at present is the lack of an industrial zone in the area to allow new light industrial businesses to open or allow existing businesses to expand. Also, the group feels that tourism should be promoted and encouraged. The area is one of outstanding natural beauty with a great facility in The Millstreet Country Park. Any increase in tourism would surely benefit everyone in the town.
Millstreet Development Group has plenty of work to do, but with the enthusiasm and hard work of its members and support from the wider community it should prove to be a big benefit for the town.

Cork County Council hopes to dispose of 42 houses, deemed affordable, in towns and villages in North Cork, as it has been unable to find buyers for them…
The houses are in Bweeng (10), Castlelyons (2), Charleville (2), Glanworth (6), Kanturk (6), Kilworth (1), Mallow (1), Millstreet (3) and Rathcormac (11)…
A senior executive officer with the council, said the local authority couldn’t continue to carry the costs associated with the empty houses. He told councillors the council had decided to sell off the houses in areas deemed to be in less demand for affordable housing…
Last year the Council dropped the prices of affordable housing when they realised that the market price was then below the price of their affordable housing. But still they have failed to sell them. Now they want to sell them at any cost, just to get the expense off their balance sheets.

The last two weeks weather has been really terrible. Daily flooding seems to be the order of the day at the moment, because all ground is saturated to the last. Hopefully the rest of the winter will dry out a little, and let life get back to some sort of normality.
The All-Souls Day (Nov 1st) this year was quite a nice day as is shown by Fr James Mc Sweeney’s photo on top, but just as a large crowd had gathered for the service in St.Mary’s Graveyard, the heavens truly did open!
A truly superb party at Nibbles Food Emporium,West End, Millstreet took place on Saturday, 14th November 2009 from 8.30 p.m. until late. Eleanor Leahy of Nibbles recently won the highly prestigious All-Ireland gold medal for her outstanding Pear and Almond Tart. All were invited to celebrate the splendid win and to partake of delicious refreshments including the scrumptious award-winning Tart in an exquisitely decorated setting which featured a welcoming lantern on the tree outside this renowned and very popular Café. A special blessing was imparted by Fr.Paddy O’Byrne (next door neighbour) and Fr. Declan O’Connor, P.P., Millstreet. We, as part of the LTV2 team, were delighted to record the very happy occasion. 1940-2009 PATRICK BUCKLEY, Caherlsee, Tralee and formerly of Millstreet, Co Cork, whose death occurred on Thursday, October 29, made an immense contribution in helping to establish addiction treatment services in his adopted county of Kerry …
… Patrick hailed from Millstreet, Co Cork and was one of four children born to Patrick and Mary Buckley. His siblings were sister Kathleen and brothers Denis and Kevin ( deceased). Patrick joined the family business of Buckley’s Stores in the 1950s, starting out on the shop floor learning the basics. He progressed to become managing director of company until the business ceased to operate during the recessionary 1980s.
As a student in Mungret College, Patrick developed a passion for rugby and wore the college colours on the field of play. He was an avid Munster supporter and gloried in their many victories and took their defeats on the chin. The recent red tide of support that has enveloped Munster rugby has seen a huge surge in their following, culminating in the two Heineken Cup victories.
Patrick’s rugby highlight was undoubtedly Munster’s famous victory over the All Blacks in the old Thomond Park on October 31, 1978. Many thousands have claimed to have been there on that famous day, but Patrick was one of the lucky ones who witnessed in person the historic and never to be forgotten victory.
Patrick’s other pastimes included reading and travelling. An avid reader, he travelled extensively in his early years and often recounted many of his enjoyable trips to foreign places.
Patrick’s family played a very central part in his life. A proud husband to his wife Breda, father, and grandfather, his love for his family was plain for all to see. Patrick and Breda celebrated their golden jubilee anniversary with a family get-together in Dingle in November, 2008. There to celebrate with them were their five sons, two daughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and 20 grandchildren, who formed a huge part of his life and who idolised him.
The removal of Patrick’s remains took place from the Gleasure Funeral Home to the Church of Our Lady and St Brendan on Saturday, October 31. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Sunday morning at 10am, following which interment took place in St Mary’s Cemetery, Millstreet.
Patrick’s family got great solace at the removal and funeral from the large number of people who acknowledged his contribution to their successful recovery.
Patrick is deeply missed by his loving wife Breda, children Patrick, Mary, Carol, John, Jim, Donagh and Kieran, sister Kathleen, brother Denis, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives and many friends.

Best of luck to Desmond Casey who has been selected on the Cork senior team for the National Inter County Cross Country Championships in Kilbeggan Co. Westmeath on Sunday, 22 November 2009, after he finished in 6th position in the Cork County Senior Cross Country Championships hosted over testing terrain in Clonakilty.
update Nov 24th: Desmond finished in a creditable 39th position in what were very difficult conditions, and 3rd of the Cork contingent. (39th #719 Casey, Desmond Cork 32.45)

Sounds of Advent
taking place in
St. Patricks Church, Millstreet on Sunday, 29th November at 7.30 p.m.
This will be a very pleasant evening of quality choral song and music – setting the mood as we prepare for Christmas on the First Sunday of Advent. It will feature Millstreet Church Choir, Kerry Choral Union and Fr. Tony Mullins of the Diocese of Limerick. The Master of Ceremonies for the night will be Fr. James McSweeney.
Admission is €20.00 and all proceeds of the night are in aid of Millstreet Church Restoration Fund. A very extensive renovation of the church is currently taking place and also includes the complete restoration of a building adjacent to the church which will now be a Pastoral Centre. The project is costing in the region of €3.5 million and much of the work with the exception of the painting of the Church will be ready for the first week of December.
Admission Tickets are now available from members of the committee, at all weekend masses or from the Parish Office on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Thomas O’Leary, Drishane Road, Millstreet, having participated in the recent Dublin City Marathon 2009 (finishing in a time of 3hrs 49mins), presenting a cheque for 1,700 Euro to Julie Harris (fundraising officer for Mercy Hospital). Thomas raised sponsorship for the Mercy University Hospital Foundation in Cork, specifically for the Children’s Cancer Care Unit. Well, well done Thomas on such a praiseworthy and superb achievement.
