Cullen Pipe Band Co Cork – 6th Prize in WORLD PIPE BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
by
Hugh O’Keeffe
On Saturday the 15th August 2009 the Cullen Pipe Band under the Pipe Major of Con Houlihan took part in the World Pipe Band Championships 2009 held in Glasgow Scotland. The band competed against 29 other bands from all over the World in Grade 3A. All members competed brilliantly and the band was rewarded with 6th place and was presented with the Corby Cup. Most members had been in Glasgow since the previous Wednesday the 12th of August in preparation for the weekend. Members took part in twice daily practices and this takes up a lot of dedication and effort so we thank all members for their great dedication and effort.
We also wish to thank all those who traveled over with the band to support them during the week. We also wish to thank those members who did not compete on Saturday but were present in other major completions during the year

Fundraiser
“Now there’s a brilliant fund-raising idea,” say Fr. Declan O’Connor, P.P. and Denis Lane as they note Martin Cleary’s new hair style (recently dyed for a €200.00 bet!). Martin indicates that he would be glad to re-dye his hair for a sponsored fund-raiser in aid of the restoration building fund for the Church. The church fund is now past the one million euro mark. No Horse Show this year
FOR the first time in four decades history, the Millstreet Summer Horse Show is a non runner this week.
This comes after an impasse between Millstreet organisers and the national body Showjumping Ireland.
Millstreet came to life each summer on the staging of its six-day equestrian festival in the Green Glens Arena, holding an unrivalled reputation as a mecca for showjumping enthusiasts.
This is the first time in 38 years that Millstreet Show will not he held and the cancellation is seen as a huge loss to owners, show organisers and the North Cork catchment area.
Apart from the show jumping, the showing classes such as the Young Irelander, Boomerang and National Discovery provided a shop window for owners to parade their young talents before buyers from across the world.
Multi purpose facilities from sand-surfaced arenas to warm-up paddocks and the spacious indoor complex added to the enjoyment for entries drawn from all over the country.
On the positive side, the 2009 Owners Pony and Young Riders Charity Show returns to Millstreet over the October Bank Holiday weekend.
The Green Glens venue is donated free of charge by the Duggan family. To date, this show has raised €190,000 for a range of local and national charities.
Noel Buckley on the campaign trail
Noel was re-elected to his seat on Cork County Council. The Kanturk Electoral Area was being reduced from a 5 seater to 4 seater, and unfortunately Marie “The Shamrock” Murphy from the West End failed to get re-elected by a very narrow margin in the seventh count. Her loss will be a big loss to the town.

Rathcoole Rovers FC
Without doubt, this has been the most successful season ever for double winning Rathcoole Rovers. This memorable year they managed to do what they had been trying to do for the past 8 seasons and went and won 1A.
For Rathcoole home form was a major factor, along with a few wins on the road. Every member of the squad played his part but special mention though for top goalscorer Tadhg Browne, who in a fine season, bagged 33 goals in total, 23 of them in the league.

Rathcoole Rovers U14 League Champs
Rathcoole Rovers U14 Won the Cork Schoolboys League Division 3 2008-2009 League title. They improved as the year went on and thoroughly deserved the win with a record of Played 14, Won 12, drawn 1, lost 1, scored 55, conceded only 8 goals. The next season will see them in division 2, where opposition will be stronger, but hopefully they will continue to improve.

Millstreet & District Farmers Calf Sale In Aid of St Patrick’s Church Restoration Project
The fundraising venture by Millstreet farmers has beaten the recessionary doom and gloom to donate €24,331 towards their Church Restoration Project.
On Saturday 14th March the Millstreet and district farmers Calf sale in aid of the Millstreet Restoration Fund reached its conclusion with close to hundred calves sold at Macroom Mart
The Proceeds from the sale goes towards the St Patrick’s Church Millstreet Church Restoration Project that’s currently in the height of a major €3 million development. The concept spurred from the Aubane Farm Discussion Group and farmers felt it was the ideal opportunity for those in Millstreet and the surrounding district to support the cause. On Saturday night 23rd April at Millstreet GAA Hall the proceeds from the Calf sale were handed over to the Church Restoration Committee.
Chairman John Twomey “thanked the farmers and those who supported the venture. He also thanked his excellent committee”.
“The additional support of Cork Marts and the Millstreet Parish Restoration Committee ensured everybody was 100 per cent behind our efforts”, he said.
Five collection points allowed calves to be collected at Cloughoula, Ballydaly, Cullen, Aubane and Millstreet and transported by local hauliers to Cork Co-op Mart in Macroom.
“We were delighted to be associated with a task that will be recalled and perhaps repeated again”, said Macroom Mart representative Tim McSweeney.
Richie O’Connor presented a cheque for €24,331 to Millstreet Parish Priest Canon Declan O’Connor. Denny Lane Chairman of the Church Restoration Committee also expressed his thanks to everyone who was part of the Calf Sale and he said they would welcome any other fundraising ideas. Canon Declan O’Connor also spoke on the work that has already been done on the church and he also expressed his thanks to everyone who supported the venture and to the committee who organised the Calf Sale. “A marvelous amount of money has been collected from this venture” Jerry Buckley from the Church Restoration Committee gave an account of the work that has been done on church to date.

The Aubane Social Club took time to time acknowledge a fundraising venture from one of it familiar hostings. All the participants in the club’s annual sponsored Mountain Climb which took place on Christmas Day morning were applauded for venturing out in great numbers to support the traditional staging and helping the St Patrick’s Church Restoration Fund.
Aubane Social Club’s Gerard Mc Sweeney commended the close on 150 participants who made it the most successful undertaking by the club. The brilliant weather added to the occasion in a venture growing in success supported by record numbers. This mountain climb on Christmas Morning has been ongoing now for over thirty years with a different charity benefiting each year. Last Year Marymount Hospice benefited from the proceeds of the climb but this year our beautiful historic St Patrick’s Church in Millstreet benefited. A cheque for €3,500 was presented by club member Sonya O’Riordan to Denis Lane Chairman of the St Patrick’s Church Restoration Fund Denis Lane said that he was no stranger to the Aubane area as it was where he was born and reared and his late mother Hannie Lane was a member of the Aubane Social Club for many years. In October Billy & Ellen Sheehan proprietors of the Wallis Arms Hotel Millstreet joined forces with the Aubane Social Club and a number of local businesses to raise the money for the Jack & Jill Foundation. A representative from the Millstreet Youth Club also presented a cheque from the proceeds of their Halloween Party. On Friday 21st January the cheque for €15,400 was presented to Jonathon Irwin the founder of the Jack & Jill Foundation in the Wallis Arms.
