Millstreet Pitch & Putt Club 60th Anniversary

We thank Pat Breen for providing the four archival pictures and the very interesting history of Millstreet Pitch & Putt Club as outlined by Maurice Linehan.   Sincere congratulations on this very special 60th Anniversary of the Club being celebrated this weekend in August 2024.   Tap on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)Millstreet Pitch and Putt

The story began in November 1962 when a group went to far flung Cork to visit the famed Rock Lodge club in order to examine the layout and facilities. Shortly afterwards an enthusiastic band decided to commence work with the consent of Millstreet town park on part of the park close to what would have been the gardens of “the Great House”.

It was an absolutely mammoth endeavour to lay out the course, construct the greens and bunkers, often on stony Coomlogane ground. John O’Keeffe, Larry O’Riordan, Tom Langrell and Phelim Marron not only displayed extraordinary commitment to the project but carried out the hard physical work required to ensure that the course would be playable in 1964. The original clubhouse was a railway carriage acquired from CIE after it had been derailed at Millstreet station laden with chocolate crumb.

We have fond memories of those early days. Clubs, tees and golf balls were purchased from Andrew O Sullivan. Technical instruction was provided by John O’Keeffe, Larry O’Riordan, Frank Reen Snr., Fr. Jim McGrath and Fr. Liam Abernethy.

We had an extensive membership from the start. Over the years, talented lady members included Teresa Corcoran Murphy, Hannah M. Riordan, Maureen Linehan, Sue Dennehy, Julia Coleman, Joan Philips, Lelia Enright, Dolly Duggan, Geraldine Justice O’Mahony, Bridie Daly, Eileen Collins, Noreen Murphy, Mary Buckley Coleman, Gillian Burke McCarthy, Joan Casey and Joan Fitzgerald O’Connor.

Similarly Eamonn O’Connor, Dan Breen, Tadhg Kennnelly, Fr. Jim Kennelly, Michael Looney, Maurice Linehan, Terry O’Leary, John Sing O’ Sullivan, Dr. Frank O Connor, the Marron Family, Paddy Enright, James Twohig, John Cronin, Anthony Manley, Frank Reen Jnr., Denis Hickey, John Randles, Tommy O’Connor and family, Noel Collins, Chris Twomey, Barry Fraser and family, Tom O’Mahony, Colman Culhane and his late father, Pat Breen, Shane Browne, John B. Casey, Brendan Kiely and family, Jerry O Connor, Denis Hickey, Willie O’Keeffe and Tom Tucker all played a role in the development of the club.

We are immensely proud of the club’s achievements on this its sixtieth anniversary. We are deeply indebted to the founding fathers for their vision and foresight in providing such an amenity which has enabled many over the years to hone their skills under the shadow of J.J. Callanan’s beloved Clara. We are of course, especially proud of Cian O Connor’s wonderful achievement as the youngest winner of the President’s prize in the 130 year history of Killarney Golf and Fishing club. We are also very proud of Diarmuid Fraser who currently works as a professional golfer in Dubai. In the early years of the club Pat Breen won the All Ireland Junior Title in St. Anne’s Course in 1976.

We must of course, acknowledge the assistance of Denis Hickey and the FÁS and Community employment workers and Millstreet town park for their commitment over the years. Finally a sincere thank you to Joan Casey, Chris Twomey, Barry Fraser, Pat Breen, Shane Browne and Denis Twomey for their loyalty and support to the club.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Save the Wallis Arms Hotel

SAVE THE WALLIS ARMS HOTEL – THE ONLY HOTEL SERVICING MILLSTREET & THE DUHALLOW REGION
Millstreet is in danger of becoming a town without a heartbeat.

One of our oldest and most valued central amenities – The Wallis Arms Hotel – is on the verge of being taken from our community.

No hotel, no food, no christenings, no funerals, no birthdays, no anniversaries, no Christmas parties, no dances, no discos, no bands, no meetings, no active retirement events, no group nights, no table quizzes, no Halloween fancy dress, no jobs – no prospect.

No heart, no community.

If you do care about our community then please use your voice to help our town from disappearing.

Acknowledgement & First Anniversary

In loving memory of Dinny whose anniversary occurs on 16th of August 2024.

We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to our amazing family, special friends and neighbours who supported and helped us navigate this overwhelming journey as we try to come to terms with life without our wonderful Dinny.

We offer our sincere thank you to all those that spent time at our home with us and who attended Dinny’s removal and funeral.  Also, a huge thank you to all those that offered condolences, sent mass cards, messages and brought food/gifts.

A special thank you to Danny Hickey, William and Claire O’Leary in Munster Fire & Safety, Marguerite Foley, First Responders, Paramedics, Gardai and the staff of Reens Pharmacy who all came to our aid that day, we will be forever grateful.

Thanks to Dr Michael Casey and Dr Mark Henderson who looked after Dinny through the years.

Thank you to Canon John Fitzgerald for celebrating a beautiful funeral mass, thank you to Sharon for arranging prayers and mass booklets and to Maire Twomey who sang so beautifully at the mass and graveyard.

We wish to express a very special thanks to Tarrants Funeral Directors, Davy, Cora and Declan for their outstanding professionalism, help, advice and support at such a difficult time.

As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually please accept this acknowledgement of our sincere appreciation.  Your kindness, compassion and support will always be remembered.  The holy sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for your intentions.

God called your name so softly,

That only you could hear:

And no one heard the footsteps,

of angels drawing near.

The gold gates stood open,

God saw you needed rest;

His garden must be beautiful,

He only takes the best.

Deeply loved, sadly missed and remembered by your loving wife Maura, daughter Mairead, son-in-law William, grandchildren Aoibhe and Isabelle, brothers Seán and Dan, cousin Eilish and extended family.

Charity Play a runaway success – Thank you Note

We are absolutely delighted to announce that The Glen Theatre Drama Group’s production of John B. Keane’s play, “The Rain at the End of the Summer”, held at the Glen Theatre last Sunday night (11th) was a resounding success.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of The Glen Theatre Drama Group, all proceeds from tickets sales were donated to Rathcoole NS Parents of Children with Additional Needs Support Group.  Director Tadgh O’Keeffe kindly presented Colette O’Keeffe & Maria Buckley with a cheque for €1000.00.

These funds will be dedicated to purchasing essential equipment and resources for all pupils, but in particular the neurodivergent children with additional needs attending Rathcoole National School.

Thank you to everyone who attended the night or donated.  Your kindness makes a huge contribution to the lives of these pupils.

The Glen Theatre Drama Group are bringing this magnificent play to The Everyman Theatre on Thursday 15th August and The Civic Theatre, Dublin on Friday 23rd & Saturday 24th August.

Philip Lenihan commands the stage as patriarch Joss O’Brien whose moral attitude conflicts with his ambitious son, Jamesy, played by Tadhg Curtin, while daughter and soon to be nun Eillie, played by Sinead Guiney tries to keep the peace.  With our own extremely talented vice principal Maureen O’Brien as feisty housekeeper Kate and past pupils Olivia Lehane and Diarmuid Cronin as the newly engaged couple, Penny & Toddy, and Anna Lehane as stagehand, this show is a must see!
