1901 Census for Millstreet

Genealogists and family historians all over will be delighted to hear that the 1901 census of Ireland (31 March 1901) has been online for some two weeks now. There are only two complete censuses relating to Ireland: those conducted in 1901 and 1911.  The 1911 census went online just under a year ago, and contains slightly more information about each individual, but the 1901 census includes the following:

  • Name and surname
  • Relation to head of family
  • Religious profession
  • Education
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Rank, profession or occupation
  • Marital status
  • Where born
  • Irish Language
  • Specified illnesses

The census is hosted on the nationalarchives.ie website, and you can navigate the Census in two ways:

  1. Using the Search facility on the site, or by
  2. Browsing Millsteet’s District Electoral Divisions of the time (map below): Coomlogane, Drishane, Keale, Caherbarnagh, Cullen, Derragh, Crinnaloo, Rathcool, Skagh, Kilcorney (listed as Kilcarney),  Doonasleen, Knocknagree, while half of Dromtarriffe Parish is in the Kanturk area in the form of  Rosnalea, and Coolclough.

Note: The town of Millstreet is split down the middle (at the bridge) by Coomlogane and Drishane DED’s.

Death Notice: Sr. Kathleen O’Riordan, Laught

The death has occurred on Monday, May 24, 2010 of Sr. Kathleen O’RIORDAN (Columban Sister) of St. Columban’s Convent, Magheramore, Wicklow. Late of Laught, Rathcoole, Mallow, Co. Cork, and Chile. Deeply regretted by her sisters Helen McMunn, Mary Finnerty, Hannah MacPhaidin, Noreen Kiely, brothers Joe and Brendan, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunt, nieces and nephews, grandniece and grandnephews, relatives, friends and Religious Community. R.I.P. Funeral tomorrow, Wednesday, after 11.30am Mass in the Convent Chapel to the Convent Cemetery. Mass will be offered for the repose of the soul of Sr. Kathleen in St. John’s Church Dromagh on Monday, May 31, at 8pm.

Earl Grey Famine Orphans

Dear Sir/Madam
My great great grandmother Johanna/Hannah Mahoney was one of the “Earl Grey Famine Orphans” from Millstreet sent to Australia in 1850. Her parents were Daniel Mahoney, a shoe maker, and Catherine nee Sheehan both deceased. I found a Widow Mahony and 3 dependants were evicted from Rathcoole in 1847 which could be Catherine.
I am trying to find out where Daniel and Catherine would have been buried as probable famine victims. Would it have been Cillin on the Clara Road or Clondrohid?
I would like to pay my respects and if possible plant a tree in their memory.
Although I was born and raised in New Zealand I have lived in Clonakilty the past 16 years and have only recently discovered my ancestors.

About the Earl Grey Female Orphans

Between 1848 and 1850 over 4,000 adolescent female orphans emigrated from Irish workhouses to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide on the other side of the world. Their emigration has become known as the ‘Earl Grey scheme’ after its principal architect, Earl Grey, Secretary of State for the Colonies in Lord John Russell’s Whig government at the time of the Great Irish Famine.

Drake and Moynihan going to Coffs Harbour Rally

The Rallyschool.com.au Irish duo of Charlie Drake (Derinagree) and Eoin Moynihan (Ballydaly) are counting down the days until the next round of the Australian Rally Championship gets under way in Coffs Harbour on the 14th – 16th May. The pair are fired up after recording their best ever result in a NSW State Championship round, the Lithgow event, where they finished third overall.

“We were really happy with the result in Lithgow and to finish third overall was a great boost for our confidence. We were seeded car 16 so to have a joint fastest stage time and be consistently in the top three was really encouraging, so now we are really looking forward to Coffs,” Charlie said.

Rathcoole Rovers B 2 Los Zarcos 1

In another hard fought derby encounter Rathcoole sent their Millstreet visitors home pointless after a late goal in the AUL Murphy’s League 3A on Sunday morning last. This was always going to be a hotly contested affair but it was Los Zarcos who looked to have the upper hand early on. They went into the lead after 10 minutes when Martin Murphy connected with a corner only to see the ball come back off the crossbar, and bounce of at least one defender before ending up in the net.

Dromtariffe GAA Social

DROMTARIFFE GAA SOCIAL will take place at the Wallis Arms Hotel Millstreet on Friday January 29. Tickets are on sale at €25 each and are available from Derrinagree Post Office, Rathcoole Post Office or from Club Officers.

Music will be provided on the evening by the Celts. On the night the club will celebrate 125 years in existence and special guests on the night will be the victorious Minor Hurlers who won the Duhallow Minor Championship for the first time.

Millstreet Matters – 29 Oct 09

VHI Cúl Camp in Croke Park

Anna Buckley from Coolnagillagh in Croke Park on Sept 28th in the GAA Summer Cúl Camp

A few pictures of Anna Buckley’s day out in Croke Park on Sept 28th. She won this through a competition she entered as part of the GAA Summer Cúl Camp sponsored by VHI, that took place in Millstreet this year.

She had a wonderful day, between playing camogie on the pitch there, as well as being given a tour of the stadium and GAA museum, and also meeting and playing with other children from many other counties.  It was a great day out.

Rathcoole Rovers FC

Without doubt, this has been the most successful season ever for double winning Rathcoole Rovers. This memorable year they managed to do what they had been trying to do for the past 8 seasons and went and won 1A.

For Rathcoole home form was a major factor, along with a few wins on the road. Every member of the squad played his part but special mention though for top goalscorer Tadhg Browne, who in a fine season, bagged 33 goals in total, 23 of them in the league.

Rathcoole Rovers U14 League Champs

Rathcoole Rovers U14 Won the Cork Schoolboys League Division 3 2008-2009 League title. They improved as the year went on and thoroughly deserved the win with a record of Played 14, Won 12, drawn 1, lost 1, scored 55, conceded only 8 goals. The next season will see them in division 2, where opposition will be stronger, but hopefully they will continue to improve.
