Ten years ago today there was a mass on top of Clara to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the erection of the first cross on Clara. To remember that day, we have added a number of photos that were taken that day.

Drishane Garden Fête from the 1930s
Drishane Castle Garden Fete Sunday May 30th 2010.
The Drishane Castle Garden Fete was a traditional bi annual established by the Sisters of the Infant Jesus during their time in Drishane Convent 1909 – 1992. It was staged as a fund raiser for the Missions.
It was always an event held close to people’s hearts, attracting crowds of supporters from near and far. Sadly the tradition died when the Sisters’ time in Drishane came to an end, the last one was staged in May 1990 exactly 20 years ago.
2010 sees the revival of the Garden Fete on Sunday May 30th 1pm – 6pm. It promises to be a day of great festivity and celebration. It co incidentally corresponds with the Polish Celebration of “Children’s Day” further ensuring that it will be a fun filled day for all members of the family. The Committee is delighted to offer an afternoon of quality entertainment for all members of the family while also helping Baby Jacob in his lifetime challenge of blindness.

#9 Alan Ring (munster joinery)
#52 Stephen Linehan (bio-tech)
Timetables and maps are available in local shops along and near the routefor €10. The closest to Millstreet are: Guerins Ballydaly, Dennehy’s Shop, Coleman’s, Anglands (Dromagh). Fine Gael Cork NW AGM tonight
The Fine Gael Cork North West Constituency AGM takes place in Millstreet this evening. Fine Gael Education Spokesman, Brian Hayes TD will deliver a speech on why there needs to be a new deal between teachers and the Government.
If I had a fiver for everyone who told me that the Department of Education HQ was a downtown office of the Irish teachers’ unions, I would be a very wealthy man. The common perception is that the unions simply click their fingers in Marlborough Street and get everything they want.
It is true that we have seen some dreadful deals down the years where educational outcomes were not the priority. But can it be said after the effective reduction of between 15% to 19% of teachers take home pay over a twelve month period that the teacher unions still dominate the agenda? Any objective observer would have to say that this is not the case.
The full speech is available on the Fine Gael website

March Horse Fair next Sunday
The March Horse fair is with us again this Sunday February 28th. So be warned and expect to get stuck through town, and not be able to get parking either!
from the Corkman:
Millstreet will come to a standstill on Sunday for its Annual Spring Horse Fair. Despite the passage of time with modern trends surfacing, the hosting has lost none of its crowd pulling appeal for patrons young and old drawn from all over the province.
Millstreet Horse Fair maintains its glamour as a social occasion and an outlet to renew acquaintances with friends. Crowds and attractions have steadily risen over recent years with reservations expressed by gardaí and the local authority to growing difficulties.
A number of restrictions will again be put in place with the aim of providing safety measures that will alleviate potential accidents and reduce traffic chaos that had become a growing hinderance not only on fair day but also on the previous days.
Sure, we’d miss it if it wasn’t on!

Ballyvourney Conference on 6th Feb 2010
from Airtricity (full details at http://www.imbolc.ie):
Beidh tionól iontach nua ar siúl ar an Satharn, 6 Feabhra 2010 san Ionad Cultúrtha, Baile Bhúirne, Co. Chorcaí. Is tionól aon lae é, agus beidh Gaeilgeoirí inspioráideacha ag caint ann, Gaeilgeoirí a bhfuil obair nó taighde ceannródaíoch ar bun acu, ó gach aon earnáil den saol – gnó, na healaíona, na heolaíochtaí & srl. ‘Sé an t-aon ábhar amháin atá á sheachaint againn ná cás na Gaeilge féin – tá a lán comhdhálacha ann cheana agus an Ghaeilge mar ábhar plé acu, agus ina áit sin is mian linn díriú isteach ar na tionscadail chruthaitheacha nuálacha atá idir lámh ag Gaeilgeoirí. Tá sé ar siúl ar bhonn go hiomlán neamhbhrábhúsach, agus tá na cainteoirí ag tabhairt a gcuid ama saor in aisce don ócáid.
Saturday, Febrary 6th will see ten of the most original and innovative thinkers in Ireland gather in Ballyvourney, Co. Cork, to give a day of talks on the ground-breaking projects they are working on. The name of the conference is “Imbolc”, and perhaps the most innovative facet of the whole event is that it is taking place entirely through the medium of the Irish language. It is being run on a non-profit basis, and all the speakers and organisers are volunteering their time for the event.
