Millstreet Community Gym

It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the temporary closure of our gym, beginning 9pm on Wednesday 21st October in response to the Governments decision to move to Level 5 of the national COVID 19 plan. All memberships will be frozen from the time we close our doors until the day we reopen.

We look forward to seeing everybody again once we are permitted to re open for business. Until then, we ask that everybody please stay safe, stay active and stay healthy. However, we will not be going quiet on social media. We will still be providing you with home workouts, tasty recipes and quick tips to help still progress while at home. If anybody would like a custom program made for them that utilises the equipment they have available to them, please get in touch and we will arrange something for you free of charge. This will be a challenging time for some people, so please stay in touch, check in with each other and reach out if you find that you are struggling. We are all in this together.

The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 – How it affected Millstreet

During this Covid-19 pandemic, it has often been compared to the Influenza Pandemic of 1918/1919. We were wondering how it affected this area, so we delved into the records to try to figure it out.

Surprisingly, what we found was that there was no big spike in deaths locally at that time compared to the surrounding years (see the graph below **). So we though that maybe it didn’t affect the Millstreet area at all … but we were wrong.

When we looked at the case by case influenza and pneumonia figures (flu was often misdiagnosed as pneumonia) in the death registers, we saw that around March 1919, there was a big jump in numbers when about 20 died from flu and pneumonia. This coincided with what was referred to as the third wave of that pandemic in Ireland, and is easily seen by the yellow spike in the graph below. The smaller orange spike (November 1918) also coincided with the second wave of the pandemic in Ireland.

In total, we think about 30 people died locally died from it over the duration of that pandemic.

Some families here got destroyed by it … Twomeys of Islandhill lost 3 in a week, Sullivans of Umeraboy lost three in a month, Butlers of Liscahane lost two in a fortnight. The one very surprising thing  though is that most of the deaths were people that died locally were in their 20’s and 30’s, which we were unaware of but was a feature of that disease.

If that many died in the spring of 1919, then about 1,000 must have been infected locally at the time. That’s a lot of sick people.

Below we first look at the disease in Ireland, and also we break down the death registers to see those that died from it locally, when they got it, and where they were from: [read more …] “The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 – How it affected Millstreet”

Millstreet C.V. Support Group

Millstreet C.V. Support Group

We are a volunteer community group set up to help people who fear being exposed to the COVID-19 virus or who may have to self-isolate. They may have the virus or have been in close contact and as a result are confined to their homes.
The group consists of almost 20 volunteers so far. We have two vans and a array of personal skills. We can provide assistance by organising shopping and delivery of groceries, firing etc. All our services are totally free to the community.
If the pandemic develops and the requests for assistance change the group will evolve to meet these new demands where possible. We will be organising a mail drop of this information to every home in our area in the next few days. More volunteers would be extremely welcome.
For more information contact: Jeremiah Keating at 087 7932736 or Liam Flynn at 087 6380053.

Cycling adventure

The “Lost/Stolen Panniers” has been found and safely returned to it’s owner.  Delighted that she can continue on her adventures with her bicycle  and panniers in and around the Country.

She sometimes writes a blog when  she goes cycling but  wouldn’t normally write one when it was as short a trip as yesterday, but the kindness which   was shown to her prompted her to highlight Millstreet with Cork’s Old Butter Road .

Air Ambulance at risk of temporary grounding due to funding shortfall

The community-funded Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR) air ambulance service based in Rathcoole is at risk of being grounded within a week due to a funding shortfall. – “We’ve done approaching 250 missions for the National Ambulance Service. We’ve been busier than we initially anticipated,” pilot John Murray told C103’s Cork Today.
The air ambulance has flown 17 missions more each month than anticipated since its launch five months ago. “We might not save lives every day but we do several times a week,” Mr Murray said.

The air ambulance, pilots, fuel and insurance are mainly funded through charitable donations while the National Ambulance Service provides an advanced paramedic and an emergency medical technician on board as well as medical supplies.  [read more …] “Air Ambulance at risk of temporary grounding due to funding shortfall”
