Clara, Caherbarnagh and the Paps

2013-07-05 Clara & the Derrynasagairt mountains - photo Stephen McAuliffe-1000At the start of July mountaineer Stephen McAulliffe from Banteer trekked from Millstreet train station over Clara, Caherbarnagh, the Paps and onto Rathmore.  Blessed with lovely weather, he’s written down his trek in his blog, along with some stunning photographs.

“… By the “Grotto” you turn left and enter a magical little shady lane that rises steadily through woodland. After a while a right turn takes you through some fir trees and then an open trail traverses the slope and offers great views eastward to Mushera and beyond to my home patch of Mt Hillary. There is more than a grain of truth in the saying that Ireland, when the sun shines is one of the most beautiful places on earth and today it was living up to its billing. The problem is getting the sun to shine. Soon you enter the open mountain and it doesn’t take long to reach the summit at 452 meters. There are some masts on the top but it is easy to ignore these as the whole of north Cork and Kerry is laid out below you. It is a great spot to rest a while and soak up the views and sunshine…” Read the full article with photos on the HowlingMist blog

2013-01-06 Blackwater Way – Map for Mushera to Bweeing

The Blackwater Way (the combined Duhallow and Avondhu Ways) is a 168 kilometre linear long distance walking route that stretches from the borders of west County Waterford across north County Cork and into the County of Kerry, following the valley of the River Blackwater. It in turn is part of the European E8 route which stretches from Kenmare to Bulgaria (some 4,300km). Here we highlight part of the route near Millstreet, from Mushera to Bweeing, a route which is described on WalkingRoutes.ie

“This is the complete section from the pub at Bweeng to the Carpark at Mushera (at the highest point of the butter road). The sections across Mossy Bed and Nadd Bog are very wet all year round. Forest operations at the start of the Nadd bog section means that the way markings are [read more …] “Blackwater Way – Trail from Mushera to Bweeng”

A visitor to Millstreet for the last two days was Peter Lonergan, a Cork man living in Australia for the last thirty years who is following the footsteps of the O’Sullivan Beara March of 1603 from West Cork to Leitrim. Of his arrival in Millstreet on Monday he said: ” Running(walking!) behind schedule Joe and Willie welcomed us to Millstreet by leading us over the last climb of the day (Clara Mt.) and into Millstreet. A day that began at 9.15am came to close at 6.15pm and some 20 odd miles covered was again a very special day and I finish by saying a Cead Mile Maith Agaibh to Padraig agus Donal, Rachel agus Cathal, Joe and Willie for their Welcome to Country.”

He stayed for the night at Geararoe B&B with Eily Buckley. The following day he walked with Michael Thornton, who took him across the Boeing, to Derrinagree School, and on to Lismire, and he said of his day: “To end a perfect day Michael brought me to his

Millstreet Autumn Walking Festival

Walk in the footsteps of legends as Millstreet’s upcoming Festival traces the route of O’ Sullivan Bere’s epic winter march over 400 years ago from Castletown Bere to Leitrim!
Our ‘A’ Walk between Ballyvourney and Millstreet traces the route over arguably the most rugged and beautiful part of this entire journey.
We earnestly hope to finish the day with less casualties than O’ Sullivan Bere suffered!!

Our ‘B’ & ‘C’ Walks are similarly rewarding with no less a personage than Minister for Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar stating that our ‘B’ Walk (The Claragh Loop) is his ‘ favourite festival walk of 2011’ .

Our ‘ C’ Walk reflects the historical influence of landlords in Millstreet. Commencing at the Wallis Arms Hotel and taking us past the ruins of the once magnificent Mount Leader Estate to a viewing point on Claragh Mountain overlooking Millstreet and the Blackwater Valley.

Full restaurant facilities are provided by the Wallis Arms Hotel which is Base Camp for the Festival.

Looking forward to you joining us for what is certain to be a memorable walking experience.

Cork City Walkers Visit Millstreet and Thoroughly Enjoy Clara Walk

Alerted by the recent "Irish Times" feature on the Clara Walk these wonderfully energetic members of a Cork City Walking Group (many of whom are members of a Cork Tennis Club) enjoyed not only a superb walk this evening (Sunday, 29th May 2011) but also a splendid picnic upon Clara Mountain. Meeting with the very fit Group at Mount Leader, LTV2's Brendan Murphy (on video camera) and I arranged to interview the sincerely friendly and very cheerful people for the Autumn Schedule of LTV2. They accorded much praise regarding the excellent Clara walkway. It's wonderfully uplifting noting the visit of such interesting people to our area who promote the advantages of such healthy outdoor pursuits. (Picture by Seán Radley for website and LTV2)
