Millstreet Vintage Club are delighted to be associated with the Culture Night in Millstreet which will be held on this coming Friday Sept 21st,the Vintage Club will put on a Display of Vintage Equipment Cars Tractors etc for the Evening and there are plenty Exhibits and Activities planned around the Town as well for the Culture Night itself,do support this Event and its all for Free.

Language and Culture Night – Thurs. 10th May 2018 in Millstreet Community School @ 7pm

This year’s Language and Culture Night will take place on Thursday 10th May in Millstreet Community School library/canteen, beginning at 7pm.  Once again it will be a chance to acknowledge and celebrate the different nationalities that are now present in Millstreet and the local area.  Everyone is welcome to attend this wonderfully inclusive community event.  (please note that filming will take place during the event for a forthcoming edition of the TG4 programme Guth an Phobail – Voice of the Community)

The Woman of the Fort

The Woman of the Fort: I often heard my grandmother (R.I.P.) (Mrs. Sarah Moynihan, Dromahane Mallow) who lived to be eighty-four years of age telling the following tale, the truth of which she would swear to. Died on July 21st 26:

At a place called Gurranes near Millstreet there lived the family of the the Twomeys. They were farmers and they had children going to school. On the children’s journey to school lay a fort or lios as it is called in Irish, through which they should pass. One day as the children were passing through the fort a fairy woman met them and spoke to one of them, a girl called Nora whom she took with her into the fort, the other members of the family proceeding on their way to school. Nora, a little girl of about seven years used to be rocking a cradle in which was a baby, inside the fort, while the rest of her brothers and sisters were in school. Just as the latter would be returning the fairy woman would meet them again accompanied by the little girl Nora, whom she would allow go home with them.
This went on for a considerable time. The Twomey boys and girls would attend school, all but one, Nora, who would spend her day rocking the cradle inside the fort. A cow got sick on Nora Twomey’s farm one day and Nora’s mother told her to [read more …] “The Woman of the Fort”

The Glen Theatre Drama Group performing “Second Honeymoon” this Friday 14th July at 8pm in The Everyman Theatre Cork

The Glen Theatre Drama Group are doing a performance of “Second Honeymoon“, a hilarious Comedy written by Sam Cree and directed by Tadhg O Keeffe on this Friday 14th July at 8pm in the Everyman Theatre, Cork. Please come along and support this great Group on the Night which promises loads and loads of Laughter and Fun. Please note (June 14th): Set Dancing Teachers are required to bring their own music CD’s for competitions. And, also that all competitions are open to anyone from anywhere, except one section of the music is confined to the parish of Millstreet only.  🎵 🎶

Volunteers for English Conversation Classes

Could you give an hour a week to help an asylum seeker improve their English? We need volunteers for our English Conversation Class.

The ‘class’ is an informal small conversational group where learners have an opportunity to practice and improve their English. You don’t need teaching experience, but if you have all the better.

A word of thanks to all those who came along to support the Language and Culture Night that was held in Millstreet Community School on Friday 12th May 2017.  Fourteen nationalities from three continents were represented! Thanks also to those who prepared food for the evening.  It was a night for celebrating cultural diversity which will be remembered for a long time.

We are holding this event to celebrate all the different languages students in the school can speak (including Irish), and the different countries that they and their families come from.

Afterwards everyone will be invited to the canteen for refreshments from different countries. You might like to bring along a traditional dish to share.

There will be stories, songs and dancing to enjoy so bring your family and friends! The event will be a great celebration of diversity in the Millstreet area.  Admission free.

Bruach na Carraige Summer Activities

The annual Comhaltas Seisiún starts in Bruach Na Cartraige Rockchapel on Tuesday July the first and continues on each Tuesday night during July and August at 8.45pm. The show of music song and dance starts with a performance from the Rockchapel group after which there is a break for refreshments. The night then continues with audience participation with all musicians, singers ,dancers, and story tellers invited to take part .. All performers are welcome.

The Sliabh Luachra Summer classes will take place from 23rd to the 26th of July. 

The annual summer camp for children aged from 6 to 16 years takes place from the 11th to the 22nd of August. This camp has been a huge success with children starting to play music, to sing and to dance at an early age. During the camp children can expect to learn a few simple tunes on the tin whistle, those playing already will learn other tunes, they will learn 2 or 3 songs and 4 or 5 céilí dances as well as having much fun and enjoyment.    We thank Jack Roche for this list of Bruach na Carraige activities.  (S.R.)

“Round the Fireside” Recordings Focus on the Bealtaine Festival 2014…First of Two Recordings Now Being Broadcast on c103 Until 11.00pm

The enthusiastic group of people from Duhallow and beyond who recently participated in two "Round the Fireside" radio programmes with Jimmy Reidy on c103 where the focus was on the forthcoming Bealtaine Festival which is being coordinated by Louise Burke of IRD Duhallow and her dedicated team.   The c103 programmes will be broadcast on Monday, 28th April 2014 and on Monday, 19th May at 9.50 pm.  The recordings took place in Freemount's Heritage Centre.  Click on the image to enlarge.  (S.R.)

The annual Easter Commemoration at the National Monument in The Square, Millstreet took place after 11.30 a.m. Mass.  It was historian supreme, Jack Lane who delivered the impressive keynote address this year.  Here we share some 40 images from today's important event.
