Nutritious Nibbles
The Southern Star Newspaper today carries an article on Eleanor Leahy of Nibbles:
If you want really fresh, wholesome and divine cakes then visit Eleanor Leahy’s award-winning artisan bakery stall. You can buy her produce at the markets in Macroom, Ballincollig, Bishopstown, Mallow, Rathmore and even the Limerick Milk Market. Amazingly she also runs the café and bakery in Millstreet, Nibbles Food Emporium. To be honest I have no idea how she maintains the passion and enthusiasm she has, as well as keeping her high standards of cooking and using local top quality ingredients, when much of her baking is hand made. Grateful that my Parents came to America … from Millstreet
Michael Dennehy is a columnist with with the online newspaper NorthJersey.com.This week he writes on immigration, and what a contentious issue it is in America at the moment, but he is glad for it in a way because he would never be there himself if his granddad hadn’t emigrated from Millstreet to the USA:
Me Grandad Dennis Dennehy” was born in Millstreet Town, County Cork, Ireland. I have never been there. My brother Brian has on a number of occasions. Millstreet Town has a population of 1,500. It is mostly a farming community situated at the foot of Clara Mountain. It’s a family joke that Grandad Dennis would always brag that we came from “Kings of Ireland.” Brian, on one of his trips there searched the Dennehy castle only to find a small, ancient cottage. An Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire
Nóra Ní Shíndile was a native of Millstreet, and a professional keener (“bean caoinadh”) in the late 1790’s/early 1800’s. It is thanks to her that the poem Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire survives today. About 1800, the scribe and poet, Éamonn de Bhál, transcribed Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire from her rendering, thus preserving the full version of the caoineadh for posterity.
Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire is one of the greatest love poems of the Irish Language. Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill composed it capturing the life and death of her husband Art on May 4, 1773 in Carriganima.
The Irish tradition of keening over the body at the burial is distinct from the wake (the practice of watching over the corpse – which took place the night before the burial). The “keen” itself is thought to have been constituted of stock poetic elements (the listing of the genealogy of the deceased, praise for the deceased, emphasis on the woeful condition of those left behind etc) set to vocal lament. While generally carried out by one or several women, a chorus may have been intoned by all present. Physical movements involving rocking, kneeling or clapping accompanied the keening woman (“bean caoinadh”) who was often paid for her services. [read more …] “An Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire”
Millstreet President
While discussing Presidential candidates in the upcoming Presidential Election (which is due to take place next October), on TV3’s Midday Show yesterday (10th Jan 2011), on which Aileen Hickie (formerly of the Square) was appearing as a guest, it was suggested (TIC) that maybe the next President could come from Millstreet!: you can see the crossfire from 32:00 minutes in the video:
Elaine Crowley: Aileen, do you have any particular preference?
Aileen: … I’d like a southerner, we’ve had a northerner for the past 14 years, no harm to move it back to the other end of the country.
Fiona McLaughtlain: Now when you say southerner, do you mean Cork specifically?
Aileen: Well I wouldn’t if it was mind Munster, I’m not saying Cork, but Munster. Not just anyone from Millstreet … I mean if they were from Munster, I’d be happy enough. [read more …] “Millstreet President”

Revisiting Millstreet
Rev. Patrick Comerford had a few words on his visit to Millstreet in his review of the year 2010:
“After many years of absence, I also briefly visited Millstreet, my mother’s home village in north Co. Cork. This is a charming village, and I regret that I never got to know it properly. I’m very aware of my family history on the Comerford and Lynders sides of the family, but know little about the stories of the Murphy and Crowley families in Millstreet.”
