In Gaelic Football circles Toots Kelleher from Millstreet Town became a household name
In the length and breadth of Ireland he knew of widespread fame
Fond memories of the man he was to this day I retain
And often in my flights of fancy I watch him play again.

Liz Lyons – Books
A love for books like the Famous Five, BFG and Fantastic Mr Fox set Cork author Liz Lyons on a road that has seen her write two hugely successful novels. From Kilcorney in North Cork but exiled to Ardcath on the Meath/Dublin border, Liz always had an interest in reading and books, she didn’t discriminate and would read “anything I could get my hands on”. Naturally it was at English that she excelled at the Community School in Millstreet.
This led her to study English and History at Trinity College in Dublin (TCD), but it would be a while before she tried her hand at writing.
“I initially thought that I might end up teaching,” she recalled. “But I soon found out that I didn’t have the temperament for teaching, I just don’t have the patience.” When Liz graduated from TCD it was into book selling she went and found herself staying at it for ten years. “It was ideal for me. Sean Radley retires
Yesterday saw the end of an era as Seán Radley officially retired from his teaching position in the Presentation National School. As a teacher he has been renowned for the quality of his work, emphasised by the fact that he was asked to give lectures in universities in Cork and Dublin. Most in Millstreet know Seán through the schools, or through his tremendous work in the community with Millstreet Museum, LTV2, and more recently here on millstreet.ie, and his efforts in the community are appreciated by all. We wish him well with this transition, and we are sure that he’ll be as ever-present in the community as before.

National 800m Champion
Congratulations to Tony Kelleher (formerly of Minor Row) now based in Cork and runing for Togher AC, who last weekend became the Irish over-40 800m champion in a personal best time of 2:02:33. A fabulous achievement no doubt.
While looking at the Irish Masters Athletic Association website, I noticed that our own Willie Neenan is still the national record holder for the mens over 65s at 800m and 1500m with times of 2.32.12 and 5.08.87, which were both set in September 1998 in Italy.

Last night RTE 1 aired a documentary “This Sporting Life – Tony Cascarino”. During it, there was a brief shot of Padraig O’Driscoll with the pipes in Italy. Padraig ODriscoll is playing the pipes, and it also shows Pat Barrett, Michael Lehane (originally from Millstreet) and John Minihan of Clonakilty. Ann Lane’s photographic journal of public art
Ann Lane (formerly of Ballinatona, Millstreet) has spent four years and traveled over 14,000 miles on an odyssey to catalog the country’s main pieces of public art. She said it was her initial encounter with Capall Mór, the ferro-cement over a steel structure, near Tralee, that depicts a Celtic war horse with broken chains around its forelegs, signifying freedom, which inspired her to undertake the task of cataloging the works …
This is from an article in the Irish Examiner today(5th Aug) describing her passion for public art, and her journey to this stage.
She featured on RTE Radio 1 yesterday morning (4th Aug) on the Kathryn Thomas Summer On One show, which can be heard in the podcast at the top of this page. (from 9:13 to 11:10 – starts just before the middle of the audio).
Ann’s passion was featured in an article on the Global Post from September ’09, and it shows some of the wonderful photography she has taken.

Brendan heading to Afghanistan
LATE LAST year, Ranger Brendan O’Mahony from Millstreet, Co Cork had work as a carpenter on the few building sites still operating in west Cork. Next month, he will be in Nad-e-Ali in Afghanistan facing the Taliban.
Twenty-four-year-old O’Mahony, who signed up last November, is just one of 80-odd men born in the Republic and hundreds more from Northern Ireland who are now serving with the British army’s Royal Irish Regiment.
“The fall of the Celtic Tiger didn’t affect me. I was still working. That wasn’t why I joined. It was something I always wanted to do. My father did 22 years in the Irish Army. I thought the British army would be more of a challenge,” O’Mahony says.
“It’s challenging,” says O’Mahony. “My younger brother is jealous and my sister thinks it’s a bit mental.”

Drishane Drama Camp
Drishane Drama Camp Concert was held on Friday, 30th July 2010. For the past two weeks a wonderful combination of international and local young people took part in the splendidly creative project. The Concert presented a most enjoyable mixture of song, dance and drama. There will be a full report with lots of pictures in next week’s “Corkman”. Great credit is due to all who helped to co-ordinate the magnificent presentation. Here we share the first of a number of images from this uplifting event at Drishane, Milllstreet. (Seán)
Sr. Christina
Sr. Christina O’Sullivan was born in Brosna Co.Kerry eighty two years ago. She entered the Presentation Congregation in the Noritiate, Oakpark Tralee. After her Profession, she was assigned to Millstreet Community until her death on 7th May 2005. She belonged a family of fourteen and had a sister (Sr.James) who predeceased her in Presentation Convent Killarney.
Sr. Christina was a woman of great faith, courage and was deeply spiritual. Her special devotion was the Rosary and she visited Tubrid Well almost daily. She loved people, and the people of Millstreet and surrounding areas loved her in return, which was shown by the crowds young and old who were present at her removal and funeral mass.
