The Dowlings of Murphy’s Terrace are a well known Millstreet clan,
I did feel sad on reading that Maura has passed away
For all of us eventually a final night and day
From the Dowling family gatherings her’s will be a missed face
The mother of the family there is none to replace,
Often seen her with Dathai and their children in Millstreet church on sunday
Since then so many years in time have ticked and ticked away
The role of wife and mother she did perform well
If there is a life after death with angels she now dwell
She remains young in memory as if time had stood still

I photographed this lovely gentleman about 20 years ago on a rainy day in a pub on a dreary day in Millstreet. Spent a few hours chatting with him as I waited to pick my sister up from Drishane. I believe his name was Owen. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

One Man and his Dog … and his Goat
There were some turning heads in Millstreet yesterday on seeing a hiker walking through the town. Not that hikers are unusual at all around here, but the fact that he was accompanied by a dog and goat! All in a days walking for Nathan Kingerlee, or should I say a week and a half’s walking! They are walking the Blackwater Way (168km) in aid of Kerry Mountain Rescue, and passed through Millstreet yesterday on their way to Geararoe B&B on the Macroom road. In Millstreet:
… People seem to very much take it in their stride, when they see us coming; although we did get a couple of strange looks, one couple crossed the street to avoid us, and Bob gave a little old granny a bit of a fright when he went to say hello to her!…

Donal Coffey Running
In this weeks Regional Report, Eily mentioned that Donal Coffey finished 2nd in the Puck Warriors 10K Jingle Run held in Killorglin recently (28th Nov 09) in a time of 34:58 (full results here).
Donal never seemed like an much of an athlete when he was younger, but he has been posting some really impressive results in the last 4 to 5 years.
Not alone does he do road running, but he also partakes in mountain running around Ireland, which is organised by the Irish Mountain Running Association. His results here have also been really impressive finishing on average 4th for all races in 2009 and 7th in 2008. One seasoned athlete told me many times that you’d have to be crazy to run up and down mountains! For the rest of us, it can be a challenge even to walk to the top of these mountains and back, which makes running them at top speed seem all the more impressive.

Nollaig na mBan
Today is Nollaig na mBan (also known as Womens Christmas, Little Christmas, and The Feast of the Ephipany) where the men get to take over the house and the women get to enjoy themselves.
After a long cold Christmas the women amongst us deserve to put up their feet for the day and enjoy themselves for once if they can … with the hope of not getting food poisoning! 😉
For those that have never heard of it, the tradition of “Nollaig na mBan” is an old custom that’s still celebrated by women all over Ireland (and indeed in Irish emigrant communities all over the world). It goes back to the days when large families were the norm. Men never lifted a finger in the house to help, and were never expected to. If a man washed the dishes, he would be called an “auld woman” by other men. No full blooded Irish man was prepared to risk that! I’m not really sure that it applies in these days where work is less well defined between the sexes, but it still a good tradition which celebrates the importance of the women amongst us.

I was there that night in eighty three as one of the massive crowd
For to celebrate our great athlete he made us all so proud
The speeches were made in the Town Square the band played up and down
From San Juan he had brought a World Championship medal with him to Millstreet his Hometown.

The Town Square full of people it was an amazing sight
Surrounded by friends and family it was Willie Neenan’s night
We felt honoured for to honour him in the old Town of Millstreet
In a place of many sporting greats he was our best athlete.

One who worked so hard for his success and fame the miles of road he ran
Cork County, Munster, All Ireland and World Championship medals he was a mighty man
Yet he was always down to earth untainted by conceit
At cross country meetings when I was young he was the one to beat.

How often he ran up and down to and from the cross on Clara Hill
Will Millstreet see his likes again I doubt it ever will
In five hundred years or more from now with the life from him long gone
The legend of Willie Neenan will still be living on.
Marina Cassidy on the Drishane Concerts
Killarney soprano and harpist Marina Cassidy has also joined dozens of musicians and singers who will perform at a sell-out benefit concert at Drishane Castle in Millstreet on December 6th for the Baby Jacob Trust.
The Killarney woman became aware of baby Jacob six weeks ago when she sang at the opening of the restored chapel at Drishane Chapel on the invitation of the Duggan family.
“That night, the Duggans were talking about the fund-raising for Baby Jacob and they asked me to be involved in the concert and I’m delighted to be,” Marina said. “There was just an incredible atmosphere in the church that night.
“When I heard about the little baby, I felt I really wanted to be part of it.”…

Baby Jacob has his First Operation
Little baby Jacob has gone through the first operation for his condition anophthalmos and his mother Wiola has written about it on his website:
A few days ago Jacob had his first operation in Germany. It was an emotional experience for us. We were very worried when they were taking him into the operating theatre. I was thinking: he is still so little, how will he take a general anaesthetic?
During the operation, Jacob got his first expanders, which from now on will be stimulating orbital growth. Thanks to a few operations like this one Jacob will be able to receive his ocular prostheses.
When after the operation we were called into the recovery room, I found myself looking at the huge IV catheter inserted into his tiny hand. I was wondering why it is so in this world that children are born sick and …

Much loved family man respected for his work in addiction treatment and services
1940-2009 PATRICK BUCKLEY, Caherlsee, Tralee and formerly of Millstreet, Co Cork, whose death occurred on Thursday, October 29, made an immense contribution in helping to establish addiction treatment services in his adopted county of Kerry …
… Patrick hailed from Millstreet, Co Cork and was one of four children born to Patrick and Mary Buckley. His siblings were sister Kathleen and brothers Denis and Kevin ( deceased). Patrick joined the family business of Buckley’s Stores in the 1950s, starting out on the shop floor learning the basics. He progressed to become managing director of company until the business ceased to operate during the recessionary 1980s.
As a student in Mungret College, Patrick developed a passion for rugby and wore the college colours on the field of play. He was an avid Munster supporter and gloried in their many victories and took their defeats on the chin. The recent red tide of support that has enveloped Munster rugby has seen a huge surge in their following, culminating in the two Heineken Cup victories.
Patrick’s rugby highlight was undoubtedly Munster’s famous victory over the All Blacks in the old Thomond Park on October 31, 1978. Many thousands have claimed to have been there on that famous day, but Patrick was one of the lucky ones who witnessed in person the historic and never to be forgotten victory.
Patrick’s other pastimes included reading and travelling. An avid reader, he travelled extensively in his early years and often recounted many of his enjoyable trips to foreign places.
Patrick’s family played a very central part in his life. A proud husband to his wife Breda, father, and grandfather, his love for his family was plain for all to see. Patrick and Breda celebrated their golden jubilee anniversary with a family get-together in Dingle in November, 2008. There to celebrate with them were their five sons, two daughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and 20 grandchildren, who formed a huge part of his life and who idolised him.
The removal of Patrick’s remains took place from the Gleasure Funeral Home to the Church of Our Lady and St Brendan on Saturday, October 31. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Sunday morning at 10am, following which interment took place in St Mary’s Cemetery, Millstreet.
Patrick’s family got great solace at the removal and funeral from the large number of people who acknowledged his contribution to their successful recovery.
Patrick is deeply missed by his loving wife Breda, children Patrick, Mary, Carol, John, Jim, Donagh and Kieran, sister Kathleen, brother Denis, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives and many friends.

Marathon run for Children’s Cancer Care
Thomas O’Leary, Drishane Road, Millstreet, having participated in the recent Dublin City Marathon 2009 (finishing in a time of 3hrs 49mins), presenting a cheque for 1,700 Euro to Julie Harris (fundraising officer for Mercy Hospital). Thomas raised sponsorship for the Mercy University Hospital Foundation in Cork, specifically for the Children’s Cancer Care Unit. Well, well done Thomas on such a praiseworthy and superb achievement. Millstreet Supports Baby Jacob

Ireland Involved Awards – Seán Radley Nominated
Our own Seán Radley has been nominated for the 2009 Ireland Involved Awards which take place this evening (Nov 5th 2009) at a dinner hosted by the Taoiseach’s Office in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham.
Sean has been nominated in the “Arts, Culture & Media” Section for his work documenting community life in Millstreet for the last 40 years. He will be accompanied at the awards ceremony by Mike and Kathy O’Connor who nominated him in the first case.

Stephen O’Riordan on the RTE News last Night
Stephen O’Riordan who made the film “The Forgotten Maggies”, has taken it a step further and yesterday was spokesperson for the victims as they seek compensation for their years in the Magdalen laundries. Dan Leary was a legend of old Millstreet but he’ll never more be seen in Millstreet Town
Or in the Town Park on a Summer’s evening With a pair of greyhounds walking up and down
He was a sterling corner back in his prime a stalwart of Millstreet Gaelic Football
Fearless and hard but fair he never shirked a challenge as those who played against him do recall.

For many years he was a Millstreet butcher the Learys of the West End were well known
And Dan the Millstreet schoolboys of the fifties did look up to we were so proud he was one of our own
In Cork County Championship Games in Coachford and in Macroom Dan Leary at his best was often seen
One of his Club’s greatest defensive players it was with pride he wore the Millstreet green.

It was with sadness I read of his passing in the flesh one that we never more will see
But for as long as I have the power to remember he surely will live in my memory
He was so down to earth and unassuming and to his friends he always remained true
‘Tis not because he’s dead I sing his praises in words I only give the man his due.

A note of interest is that Dan was in the 1930s the first child baptised in St Patricks Church following its opening after two years of restoration.
Family Fun at Dromtarriffe
A most enjoyable Family Fun Day with “Crafts & Creatures” was held at Dromtariffe Centre on Bank Holiday Monday, 26th October 2009. A host of marvellous activities took place including a wonderful exhibition of Capoeira by Testa and an opportunity to view rare and beautiful animals. The fascinating event was co-ordinated by Marie & Brendan of “The Animal Road Show” & Friends. Here we share a selection of pictures we took at the end of the excellent event (see below). Baby Jacob
Spare a thought for baby Jacob Nowak who was born in Millstreet in September with a very rare condition called Anophthalmos which is a congenital absence of one or two eyeballs resulting in severe malformations of the facial skeleton. Early treatment is necessary and there will be fundraising for this to help his family pay for the procedures. At the start of December there will be a concert in the Chapel in Drishane to help little Jakob. There is a superb lineup of performers and those confirmed are : Marina Cassidy – foremost Irish harpist/soprano; Millstreet Church Choir; Music Group “Sceal Eile”; Polish Choir from Cork; Claire O’Leary, fiddle soloist; Louise Bourke, soprano and Niall Moylan, pianist; Siobhan Forde, organist; and the Drishane Gospel Choir. Tickets can be putchased locally. Full concert details are given below :
