Stained Glass Angels
The above photo is from Fr James McSweeney’s website 2u.ie. It is a close-up of a small part of the “Adoration of the Magi” stained glass window in St.Patrick’s Church Millstreet. It is by Ireland’s most famous Stained Glass Window maker – Harry Clarke. The colour and detail are fantastic when you realise what you see above is only a small corner of the full window [see a photo of the full window below]. Fr James has a thought for every day and today it is about the Saints:
Today is All Saints Day and it always falls on November 1st, to coincide with Halloween. As Halloween has pagan roots, an attempt was made to make spiritual all the events that surround it. This is where All Saints Day comes in today. On the spiritual calendar it is indeed a special day. It would be a mistake to think today is about famous or celebrity Saints. Today is all about our own loved ones gone on before us who lived decent, honest, simple and down to earth lives. They may not have been famous, they may not have [read more …] “Stained Glass Angels”
International Space Station passes overhead
Tim Murphy from Boherbue captured this image of the International Space Station (ISS) zooming across the skies over Millstreet on Thursday, 28 April 2011. (click the image to see it in full)
The (ISS) will be visible in the night sky each night during this week until the 21st, although the best viewing opportunities are not expected from this Thursday (if there wasn’t so much cloud in the sky 🙁 !!!)
The Station will take on the appearance of a bright star racing from west to East across the southern skies. It will take approximately 9-10 minutes to [read more …] “International Space Station passes overhead”

Millstreet Presentation Secondary School Class Photo of 1936
Joan Ankettell, Boherbue who used to work at the Avonmore Electrical Co. in West End, Millstreet provided Maree Healy, Cloghoulamore, Millstreet with this very interesting school class photograph of 1936 taken in the Presentation Secondary School, Millstreet. Joan is seated in the front row to the extreme right (Her name appears under her). We believe that Gobnait Twomey also appears in the photograph. Maree and the website team would be very grateful of identification of the various people in this quite excellent photograph by any of our many Millstreet website visitors. Many thanks to Joan and Maree for making this fascinating picture available to us to share with all worldwide. (S.R.)
A View from Above
Gaelic Helicopters who are based in Mallow, have recently put some excellent aeriel photos from their helicopter on smugmug, for all to view (and purchase if they wish). They have added four from Millstreet, which gives different views of our town, which were taken on an April morning 2008, and July 2007 (including the one above which looks like someone has taken a bite out of Clara Mountain), as well as dozens more from around Cork County. Have a look at them on Smugmug, and click on “X3 Large” to see them in full size. [read more …] “A View from Above”

The Old Cross
The old cross on top of Clara Mountain in the evening sun with Millstreet in the valley below to the right. The cross had been there since 1982 but was so dilapidated that it was recently felled to make way for a new one. Tradition had it that the Leaving Cert students would go to the top of Clara before the final exams. That year (2010), one of them tied their old school shirt up high around the top of the cross, and it lasted there for a few months. It makes for a very interesting and peaceful photo.
