Election day is drawing near, on Friday next May 23rd, we all have the privilege to go to the polling booths and vote. To have a vote is a wonderful thing, it gives us the power to choose the person who, in our opinion will work for us and our community in the months and years ahead.
It’s not an easy decision to make You see the posters on the walls and poles all over the country, all striving to get the go ahead for their own party or group. Picking one is just a game of chance, because you really don’t
know them, You’ll see the party they represent, but what of the individual. You just don’t know.
LTV’s Dan Joe Kelleher will broadcast a special programme in which four of the Candidates who are participating in the forthcoming MEP Election will share their views. Included will be Deirdre Clune (F.G.), Brian Crowley (F.F.), Liadh Ní Riada (S.F.) and Seán Kelly (F.G.). The programme is scheduled to be broadcast at 10pm on this Thursday, 8th May 2014. It is scheduled to be repeated on Sunday, 11th May at 8pm. The transmission is available on air on Channels 30 and 35 UHF for those who are able to receive this signal. (S.R.)

Áine Collins was on the panel for Leaders Questions on RTÉ 1 today. The discussion centred around transparency in charities, and what the government intends to do so we can see where our donations go to (hopefully not in huge pay packets to people that run the charities like we have been hearing recently). Her direct interest in the topic comes from the fact that she sits on the Public Accounts Committee which will are investivating the revelations of the recent weeks.

Community groups in isolated areas are being encouraged to start applying for the newly introduced: ‘Local Area Hackney License’ or ‘Rural Hackney’ license.
The licence, which is designed to facilitate low-cost entry into the taxi sector for isolated rural areas, will cost just €70 between the vehicle and drivers’ licence and will be introduced on a pilot basis.

In an interview in the politics section of last Saturday’s Irish Independent, which took place in the Wallis Arms Hotel, Millstreet TD Áine Collins talks about brushing off the fuss over ‘Lapgate’, juggling family life with politics, the obstacles in her way, and her determination to overcome them.
It has been announced that design proposals for the Millstreet Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade have been approved at Government level, and that Cork County Council will now proceed with preparing contract documents with a view to seeking tenders as soon as possible. The contract is estimated at a cost of €4.1, and it is expected that it will make the Millstreet plant compliant with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.
The upgrade was called for in a 2010 survey on all urban treatment plants in the country. The following measures needed to be completed:

Cork Business Community Talks Shop
The Cork business community was out in force today, (Friday, 1st February) for a full day conference and networking event, to discuss issues facing SMEs in Cork, and what action is needed to help businesses thrive.
The event too k place in Charleville Park Hotel, Co Cork, and was addressed by key note speaker, Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD, who spoke about changes that are planned through public and private resources to nurture growth in the SME sector.
The event was an amazing opportunity for discussion on the current economic climate and what supports are out there for SME owners, business managers and would be entrepreneurs. The lively debate was an encouraging forum for business development, sustainable job creation and the resources available to anyone in business in Ireland.

Millstreet Convent National School is in urgent need of three new classrooms and the Government needs to immediately deal with an application from the school for support.
Cork North West Deputy Michael Moynihan raised the issue during a special debate in the Dáil today.
He commented: “The school population of Millstreet Convent National School has shot up in recent years and the school is full to capacity. Last year there were 218 enrollments, with 244 this year, it is expected to rise even further in the coming years. There is an urgent need for a new classroom and two learning support rooms. The Board of Management of the school have applied for Capital Funding but with the new school year already well underway, this process cannot be delayed.

Well done to the 15 members off the Charlevile/Ballyhea group “No to the bondholders bailout” and the support from the surrounding parishes in protesting outside the ECB Bank this morning the 6th June. They were present when the head of the ECB bank Mario Draghi turned up.

Millstreet TD Áine Collins said she considered emigrating to the United States because services in Cork were so poor for her daughter, who has cystic fibrosis.
The Fine Gael TD said she expected a dedicated unit for children with the condition would open in Cork University Hospital (CUH) within two years.
Building will begin in December depending on private funding, she said, promising to use her position in Government to “keep an eye” on it.

CorkPolitics.ie report that Áine Collins TD, has welcomed the Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan’s decision to provide €5 million in funding for agri-food enterprises in rural Ireland after she raised the topic in the Dáil a few weeks ago.

I welcome the opportunity to speak on this topic as it is very important. I ask the Minister to consider re-opening funding for the agrifood and horticulture sectors under Leader funding. This comes under Axis 1 of Leader funding, which currently only supplies funding for bakery products. It is important that we look again at this issue. The provision of Leader funding is about supporting rural businesses and communities and it seems ridiculous that in a country that promotes itself on the quality of its agricultural products does not support local food businesses. Deputy Collins went on to say that the establishment of a local action group could go some way to ensuring the long-term viability of the Hospital.

Local Sinn Féin representative Des O Grady is calling on people across Cork North West to resist plans by the HSE to close local Community Hospitals across the constituency. Speaking after it became public that all community hospitals with less than 50 beds were earmarked for closure O Grady said, “strong rumours are circulating in the area that Millstreet, Kanturk and Macroom Community Hospitals may be shut down as all are under the 50 bed limit proposed by Minister for Health James O Reilly. Seán Radley travelled to Dublin today to the inauguration of our new President Michel D Higgins in Dublin Castle. Though he was not in the castle, he was interviewed outside by an RTÉ News crew, stating that he had come up from Millstreet, Co. Cork for the inauguration. The interview later appeared on the 1 o’clock news, and may be on the news bulletins later this evening also. For the next week, you’ll be able to see the short interview on RTÉ Player, and it’s about 13:30 in the video.
