Election day is drawing near, on Friday next May 23rd, we all have the privilege to go to the polling booths and vote. To have a vote is a wonderful thing, it gives us the power to choose the person who, in our opinion will work for us and our community in the months and years ahead.
It’s not an easy decision to make You see the posters on the walls and poles all over the country, all striving to get the go ahead for their own party or group. Picking one is just a game of chance, because you really don’t

It has been announced that design proposals for the Millstreet Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade have been approved at Government level, and that Cork County Council will now proceed with preparing contract documents with a view to seeking tenders as soon as possible.  The contract is estimated at a cost of  €4.1, and it is expected that it will make the Millstreet plant compliant with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.

Áine wanted to leave Ireland over lack of cystic fibrosis services for daughter

Millstreet TD Áine Collins said she considered emigrating to the United States because services in Cork were so poor for her daughter, who has cystic fibrosis.

The Fine Gael TD said she expected a dedicated unit for children with the condition would open in Cork University Hospital (CUH) within two years.

Building will begin in December depending on private funding, she said, promising to use her position in Government to “keep an eye” on it.

She said frustration with the lack of isolated units and the fear her daughter, Lily, would pick up infections in CUH were the reasons why she …… read the full article on the Irish Examiner

Funding for Agri-food Enterprises

CorkPolitics.ie report that Áine Collins TD, has welcomed the Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan’s decision to provide €5 million in funding for agri-food enterprises in rural Ireland after she raised the topic in the Dáil a few weeks ago.

“In Cork North West, there are a number of really good small businesses producing very high quality food but they need help in expanding their offerings and their markets and I am glad now that they will have a chance to avail of badly needed support. Locally, we have high quality producers such as McCarthy’s butchers, Ardrahan Cheese, not to mention the foods produced by Millstreet Community Horticultural Group, among many [read more …] “Funding for Agri-food Enterprises”

Áine Collins TD speech on Leader Funding

Our local TD Áine Collins delivered this speech yesterday in the Dail:
I welcome the opportunity to speak on this topic as it is very important. I ask the Minister to consider re-opening funding for the agrifood and horticulture sectors under Leader funding. This comes under Axis 1 of Leader funding, which currently only supplies funding for bakery products. It is important that we look again at this issue. The provision of Leader funding is about supporting rural businesses and communities and it seems ridiculous that in a country that promotes itself on the quality of its agricultural products does not support local food businesses. I hope the Minister of State can address the issue of how Ireland’s operational programme for rural development can allow funding to be [read more …] “Áine Collins TD speech on Leader Funding”

Local Communities must organise to oppose Hospital Closures

Local Sinn Féin representative Des O Grady is calling on people across Cork North West to resist plans by the HSE to close local Community Hospitals across the constituency. Speaking after it became public that all community hospitals with less than 50 beds were earmarked for closure O Grady said, “strong rumours are circulating in the area that Millstreet, Kanturk and Macroom Community Hospitals may be shut down as all are under the 50 bed limit proposed by Minister for Health James O Reilly. The Christmas Eve leak of the HSE’s 2012 service plan with the prospect of 900 bed closures and 4,500 medical staff cuts gave notice to the elderly and the ill in society of what lay before them in the New Year. It seems that the Government and the HSE now have an unwritten policy to [read more …] “Local Communities must organise to oppose Hospital Closures”

Denny Owen

Born and raised in Claraghatlea a mile from the Town of Millstreet and admired and respected and widely known
And though he had lived for years in Bandon we used to claim him as one of our own
And as a primary school going boy in the fifties to this day I can recall
When Denny Owen the Politician was a Minister in Ireland’s Dail.

In the murky game of Politics Denny Owen was a rarity
When he gave his word he kept it he was as honest as could be
And a favourite quote of old Den Looney’s was ‘we will stick by Denny Owen’
As a brother to Matt and son to Mary Annie he is still one of our own.
