Interest in Horse Show even greater

Millstreet Horse Show 2011

From an article in the Irish Examiner:

Interest in this year’s Millstreet Horse Show is even greater than last year, according to Noel C Duggan.

“Entries are flying in and we have three girls on the phones. Also, we were the first to take entries on line and it has proved to be great for both the show and competitors.

“I can guarantee that this year’s show will be spectacular, with huge improvements in the lay-out of the place. Eight sand arenas will be in operation, all drained and refreshed, and we have undertaken landscaping. Along with the competitions that featured last year, we will be announcing new, exciting elements to [read more …] “Interest in Horse Show even greater”

Millstreet Matters – 2nd June 2011

The ‘Millstreet Matters’ column (written by John Tarrant) on the Corkman, and containing lots of news from the Millstreet is available online again. This week it covers the:

Reminders of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy

The Irish Times today profiles the walk up Clara Mountain bringing in Mount Leader House and other items along the route:
—————–
Reminders of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy are a compelling attraction on the way up Claragh Mountain.

THE GHOSTS of old estates with their haunting reminders of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy always provide a compelling attraction and I can mooch around them for hours, especially if they are not well frequented. Such is the case with the Mount Leader Estate through which the Duhallow Way provides access to Claragh Mountain (452m) whose profile provides such a fine backdrop to the town of Millstreet. Rule 2: Talk to everyone, even the dogs

This is part of an article by Ellen Puff on finding her ancestors in Kilcorney which appears on the Tourism Ireland website:

… In Ireland, allow yourself time, even more time than you think you might need, to explore, to talk, and to listen. I am lucky enough to have inherited my father’s gift of gab and my mother’s red hair. So, almost everyone that I met was willing to talk and/or help to investigate my family lines. The Irish love to talk and you never know what you might learn from even the most inconspicuous person. Real talking and listening take time.

Also, driving in Ireland is difficult at best. I rented a car for three weeks and chose to drive because my family’s townlands were literally “off the beaten path” and, after years of research, I wanted to stand on our terra firma. My Shea side of the family was from Carragraigue, Drumtarriff Parish, Cork. [read more …] “Rule 2: Talk to everyone, even the dogs”

Corkman of the Year

Paddy O’Brien, whose mother was Nellie Long from Aubane, who has crusaded tirelessly for the elderly for over six decades, who headed up the southern division of the Irish Heart Foundation for years, and who is also the driving force behind the hugely popular Over 60s competition, one of the largest talent shows for the elderly, has been named the Cork Person of the Year for 2010. He said he was stunned and humbled by the honour.

“Loneliness is still a huge problem among the elderly and that is one reason why I continue to run the Over 60s Show in communities all over the city and county, for the past 34 years,” he said.

He told guests that he became a voluntary social worker in 1953, when as a 14-year-old, he took a summer job as a “messenger boy”, and came across extreme poverty in inner city areas.
He began running errands for elderly people and later [read more …] “Corkman of the Year”

Ellis impresses

Mark Ellis battles for the sliotar with Waterford's Eamonn Murphy

Last Saturday in the Waterford Crystal Cup Final, Mark Ellis apparently did his chances of retaining his place on the Cork team no harm at all.

From the Southern Star – “… while half backs Christopher Joyce, Mark Ellis and Ray Ryan comprised Cork’s strongest line. Millstreet’s Ellis always looked comfortable at centre back, and, aside from Conor Lehane, he was the most impressive of the Cork newcomers overall…

So much so that the Examiner reports this morning that he has been put straight into centre-back for his first full competitive senior game when Cork play Limerick this Sunday in the league.

Walk of the Week: Claragh Mountain

Last Saturday’s Irish Independent featured the new walk around Clara Mountain as their “Walk of the Week”:

Millstreet sits at the feet of the mountains where the Boggeragh and Derrynasaggart ranges come together in the tumbled country of north Cork. It’s a neat, compact place with brightly coloured houses along the main street, some handsome neoclassical public buildings and a cheerful air of civic pride.

Just the place to host a superb walking festival — and that’s an ever-growing twinkle in the eye of Derry Sheehan, Michael Thornton and such hometown brethren who enjoy getting out and about in their native hills and countryside. [read more …] “Walk of the Week: Claragh Mountain”

Grateful that my Parents came to America … from Millstreet

Michael Dennehy is a columnist with with the online newspaper NorthJersey.com.This week he writes on immigration, and what a contentious issue it is in America at the moment, but he is glad for it in a way because he would never be there himself if his granddad hadn’t emigrated from Millstreet to the USA:

Me Grandad Dennis Dennehy” was born in Millstreet Town, County Cork, Ireland. I have never been there. My brother Brian has on a number of occasions. Millstreet Town has a population of 1,500. It is mostly a farming community situated at the foot of Clara Mountain. It’s a family joke that Grandad Dennis would always brag that we came from “Kings of Ireland.” Brian, on one of his trips there searched the Dennehy castle only to find a small, ancient cottage. 1970s Footballers Remembered

The Southern Star this week carries an article on the Carbery Football of the 1970s at the West Cork GAA awards. the Millstreet team are highly praised as fine adversaries :

… Millstreet were probably the strongest club team in the county with a handful of county players like the great Dinny Long, Humphrey Kelleher, John Coleman and Connie Hartnett and they fought some great battles with Carbery.

Who will ever forget the clash between Donal Hunt and Humphrey Kelleher in Macroom. Two iron men, neither backing down from the challenge, we can still hear the thump. Of course, those were the days when referees allowed the physical in football and there was a definite place for tough men. The pity was that such a fine Millstreet team never got to win the county …

What a difference a day makes

It’s been a strange day on the politics front. This morning out sitting TD and Minister for Enterprise Batt O’Keeffe was being praised in the Irish Independent as being top dog in Munster, and quoted in today’s Examiner that he was going to contest the coming election. By lunch time news broke that he was quitting politics altogether after yesterday denying that he was considering quitting. (Locals knew there was something up when the Fianna Fáil convention in Millstreet last Monday to select candidates was cancelled at short notice).

Maybe he realised like the rest of the cabinet that since the chance of him getting into office the next time around was getting slimmer as the days went by and [read more …] “What a difference a day makes”
