Áine for FG ticket?

Áine Collins

God only knows when the next General Election may happen, but the papers are saying that Áine Collins will be on the voting card for FG in the next election and looks like getting in at the expense of FF:

Newmarket-based Gerard Murphy, who contested the 2007 election for Fine Gael in the north of the constituency, has already withdrawn his name from the race. Áine Collins, who runs a financial services company in Millstreet, is the front-runner to win the party’s nomination for a candidate in the north of the constituency. A Fine Gael insider said that she would offer voters a fresh perspective.” – Evening Echo

With just under 50 per cent of the vote, the FG team of Michael Creed and Áine Collins are sure of two seats.” – Irish Independent

Margaret’s Wonderful 100th Birthday

She is Aunt to local Millstreet people - Marie Carroll (nee Radley), Killarney; John, Tommy and Denis Radley, Dungarvan as well as Denis & Tadhg Murphy, Ballydaly. Niece, Breeda Condon of Mitchelstown presented President McAleese's cheque of almost two and a half thousand Euro to Margaret and read the President's wonderful letter sent especially to Margaret from Áras an Uachtaráin. Margaret's daughter, Johanna, presented the Queen's card to her Mum. Highlights of the historic occasion will be broadcast on LTV2 Millstreet. (Seán Radley for www.millstreet.ie)

Google Street View of Millstreet

Community School Students on their lunch break outside Centra at the West End wave at the Google Street Car in May 2009

Google have today launched their Street View of Ireland, and Millstreet is included in that. For those that don’t know what Street View is, it places panoramic photos from the street every 10 or so metres on top of Google Maps. Most of the local roads are covered too, even out in the countryside. It is very impressive.

If you haven’t been to Millstreet, or haven’t been there in a while and would like to see how it has changed, then click here to start in the Square.

It appears that the Google Street Car visited Millstreet sometime in May 2009 (the election posters are up around town). Included below are dozens of people caught by the Google cameras in Millstreet (more being added all the time).

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news Report 1032 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this calm and wet, Tuesday morning, the last one in September.

This was  very sad week in Millstreet when the remains of 54 yr old Tadgh Moynihan were brought home to his native Millstreet, all the way from Australia where he met an accidental death over a week ago. He was widely revered in Australia and again when his body lay in repose at Tarrants funeral home .The procession of sympathisers when on for many hours. And the Parish Church was full to capacity for the requiem Mass which was concelebrated by seven priests.   A private Mass for the Family was said at the funeral home on Sunday and becuse for Tagdy’s love for Sport, the Sam Maguire Cup was brought for that occasion. He will be so sadly missed. On behalf of our community I want to extend our deepest sympathy to his Family. And may the lovely Tadgh, Rest in Peace.

On a lighter note I want to congratulate Noel C Duggan on succeeding in his efforts to remove sanctions imposed by the SJI on competitors who took part in Millstreet Summer Horse Show this year. It was not an easy task, but he took them on and won. Well done to himself and his family. See our Website for more details.

Good news for Millstreet Horse Show

There was good news for Millstreet Horse Show this week as Show Jumping Association of Ireland (SJI) members proposed and passed a motion to cancel all fines and suspensions arising from member who jumped at the horse show last August.

The SJI and Green Glens have been in a protracted dispute centering on the issue of insurance. This came to a head in August when the Corkman staged what he termed an ‘independent’ show, with many SJI members and officials defying the threat of sanction to participate. In turn, the SJI rescheduled its national championships to run opposite Millstreet, arguably the country’s most popular show, and the organisation is in … [read more …] “Good news for Millstreet Horse Show”

==========

Sadness at death of Tadgh Moynihan
Millstreet came to a standstill early this week as the local community came out in their droves to pay respect to the sadly departed Tadgh Moynihan.
Shock and disbelief surfaced in Ballydaly and Millstreet when it was learned of the sudden and unexpected death of Tadgh in a work related accident in Sydney, Austrailia. Indeed, his passing evoked widespread regret far and wide where Tadgh enjoyed universal respect.
A tremendous sportsman and lover of GAA games, soccer, rugby and rallying, Tadhg was to the forefront of all activities organised by local clubs – nothing was too big or small for the affable Tadgh in helping to improve the fortunes of individuals and teams. Indeed from far off shores and away from sport, Tadgh imparted guidance, advise and information, generously shared with young people in his native land contemplating or seeking out information on venturing down under to a new world.
Tadgh served as Chairman to Millstreet GAA from 2002-6 where the club developed and flourished, his dynamic and visionary ideas gave direction on a positive front. Under Tadgh’s chairmanship, Millstreet GAA played host to its inaugural golf classic and it met with an overwhelming response, the venture raising invaluable funding for the club who had embarked on a number of developments including the upgrading of dressing rooms that was complimented by achievements on the field at adult and underage level.
Working in tandem with Millstreet Town Park Committee, Millstreet GAA club under Tadgh worked on developing superb playing surface and floodlit lighting helped generate a positive feedback, reflected on Millstreet playing host to Duhallow Junior A Football and Hurling Championship Finals, a County Intermediate Hurling Championship semi-final and County Ladies senior football championship finals.
Behind the scenes, Tadgh worked ceaselessly in the best interests of people. During his tenure as club chairman, Millstreet regained the Duhallow JAFC, adding Junior Hurling League and U21 hurling championship titles. Indeed, if there was a job to be done, Tadgh did it from initiating fundraising drives to serving as selector to various team managements, from junior A football to minor hurling and underage level.
Above all, Tadgh was a sports fan, travelling far and wide in support of Cork teams and Munster rugby in Heineken Cup from Cardiff, France to far off Spain. Tadgh held a keen interest too in soccer, enjoying internationals to becoming manager to Keim AFC in the Cork AUL.
Even while residing in the Sydney, Millstreet, Duhallow, Cork and Munster was never far from Tadgh’s heart. And through the mediums of The Corkman to the internet, he followed teams and submitted material involving Millstreet exiles in gaelic games to the progress of his son Eoin and friend Charlie Drake in rallying.
Guards of honours at the removal came from Millstreet GAA, Ballydaly GAA, Keim AFC and his former work colleagues at Molex. Tadgh’s friendship stretched far and wide, his passing evoking a deep sense of loss. Sincere sympathy is extended to Tadhg’s bereaved family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1031 from Millstreet.

Fondest greeting dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this mild and breezy, Autumn Tuesday morning.

Oh the Joy of an All Ireland win, and the twenty year wait made it all the sweeter. God Bless them all  and well done all round.

And well done also to little Katie Taylor on winning yet another World Boxing Final, where she had to take the ring and fight her battle all by herself. What a girl.

Our friends from Our Twin Town in Brittany, arrived in town on Saturday at noon amid a blaze of red/white flags and all that goes with the excitement of the day before the Match. They were treated to welcome helpings of Irish Stew at McCarthys Bar, ably prepared by the local committee. Later, in ideal Autumn weather, they attended a very enjoyable tree-planting ceremony near the Grotto on the Macroom rd to celebrate 25th anniversary of the Twinning project. The pipe band played there as they do for all of special occasions.  Just now our guests are enjoying a few days in the West of Ireland and will be back here on Friday on time for a celebration Ball at the Wallis Arms Hotel  Tickets available from any member. And they leave us again on Saturday.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1030 from Millstreet

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this wet and soft Autumn  morning.

We got a great psychological boost here this past week when an Australian film company came to make a documentary on the history of the EuroVision Song Contest and the places that hosted it. Niamh Kavanagh herself came too. They all stayed locally in Michael & Pam Thorntons beautiful new B ‘n B at Drishanebeg. They told us that there is more positive talk about Millstreet around the world than any other place that hosted it. It was different, it was great, and it was their reason for coming back to recall it all again. Cameras rolled  as  volumes of memorabilia  so lovingly preserved, were brought to light and stories of the whole euphoria were told again. Niamh wanted to meet everybody, shake every hand, hug everybody. It was as she said, like coming home. All too soon their three days were gone and they had to leave, but the memories and friendships live on. Lots of their visit was captured for LTV2, so you’ll see them in time. Look up our website also and in time we will get a copy of their entire documentary.
