Unveiling in Kilcorney

Last Sunday in blistering sunshine, Kilcorney unveiled a commemorative plaque to honour of the visit of Cardinal William Levada to his great-grandmothers home-place in Kilcorney on Easter Sunday 2008. The unveiling happened after 10:30am mass which was celebrated by Fr Winter and concelebrated by Monsignor Mulcahy (an uncle of Donie Howard), and the unveiling was performed by Aiden Horgan, a relative of Cardinal Levada.

Monsignor Mulcahy gave a very interesting sermon which detailed Cardinal Levada’s (the Pope’s right hand man)  life, how he ministered with him in Santa Monica (California), and how he rose to his current position of Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He also talked about his great-grandmother Kate Horgan who had emigrated across the Atlantic all those years ago from Horsemount, and crossed the USA and settled in California.

A large crowd gathered outside St Nicholas Church immediately after the mass for the [read more …] “Unveiling in Kilcorney”

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1026 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this rather changeable but warm Tuesday morning.

Last week we held our breath, hoped for the best and prayed, and all of our efforts paid off  a hundred fold. Our Summer Horse Show at the mighty Green Glens was a resounding success. Horses and people came pouring in, the weather was ideal, and the atmosphere was electric and when nights fell in, jumping went on till late in the indoor arena at night.  At various times young riders from Mallow’s Riding School put on beautiful displays to the strains of Strauss music. And on Sunday afternoon the Grand Prix brought our Summer Show to a spectacular close. The Duggan Family issued heartfelt thanks to all those who supported them in any way.

In conjunction with the show an Artisan / Craft Fair was held in the town square on Saturday with everything from hot food the painted pictures, glass wear, jewellery, etc on sale. It was very well supported.  The pubs and hotel put on music every night  giving  visitors to the show got good value for their money.

Taking a Stand for Mallow Hospital

Thanks be to God someone is standing up for our services and our local  hospital which of course is Mallow. In an article in the Irish Examiner today, Dr Pat  Casey is one of a number of doctors who are standing up in defense of Mallow Hospital:

Millstreet GP Dr Patrick Casey questioned the motives behind the investigation: “I am a senior GP in the area and have worked for 45 years and always referred patients to Mallow and they have always been more than satisfied with the service.

“Furthermore, I have been a patient there myself and so have members of my family and we have been very satisfied.

“I wonder if this is a back door message, certain agreements were made around reconfiguration, that some services would transfer to Cork but that emergency services would be kept at MGH.”

Dr Casey said emergency services were vital for the large rural areas around Mallow.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely soft rich Tuesday morning.

On behalf of our community I’d like to say a fond céad míle fáilte (hundred thousand welcomes) to all those who are visiting us at the moment. We have lots to see and do and our mountain scenery is the best for walks or car-drives.

New loop walks are being signposted all the time, helping the walking enthusiast to enjoy their trip to the full. Further to that some beautiful new B ‘n  Bs have opened up close to the town, and some people in more remote areas along the Munster Way are beginning to show an interest. This would be a very welcome development. Anybody with an interest should contact IRD Duhallow at 029 60633.

And be reminded that our Town Park is a beautiful place to take a leisurely strole or a speedy run. The children’s playground there is state of the art, we have a double Tennis Court, Pitch ‘n Putt, as well as many ball game pitches.

Brendan heading to Afghanistan

LATE LAST year, Ranger Brendan O’Mahony from Millstreet, Co Cork had work as a carpenter on the few building sites still operating in west Cork. Next month, he will be in Nad-e-Ali in Afghanistan facing the Taliban.
Twenty-four-year-old O’Mahony, who signed up last November, is just one of 80-odd men born in the Republic and hundreds more from Northern Ireland who are now serving with the British army’s Royal Irish Regiment.
“The fall of the Celtic Tiger didn’t affect me. I was still working. That wasn’t why I joined. It was something I always wanted to do. My father did 22 years in the Irish Army. I thought the British army would be more of a challenge,” O’Mahony says.
“It’s challenging,” says O’Mahony. “My younger brother is jealous and my sister thinks it’s a bit mental.”

The above is an extract from an article in today’s Irish Times

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1023 from Millstreet.

Fondest greeting dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely balmy Tuesday morning.

This weekend we welcomed our new Parish Priest Fr. John FitzGerald, he will have the daunting tack of presiding over the entire parish, with its three churches and a sprawling congregation. And as we welcome him in we assure him of our full support and co-operation. And may God bless his work.

And on the subject of people I want to say well done to the places who have started to hold ,”getting–to-know-the-neighbours” gatherings . In these days of doom ‘n gloom and uncertainty there is nothing more encouraging than to know the name of all those around you and be on friendly a familiar terms with them, I hope the idea grow and flourish in many other places.
