Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Polish Community on the tragic deaths of their leading politicions at home in Poland. May they rest in Peace.

The death has occurred on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Mallow General Hospital of Julia HORGAN, (née Ring) of North Horsemount, Kilcorney, Cork. Reposing at McCarthy’s Funeral Home, Banteer this Wednesday evening from 6.30pm, followed by removal at 8.30pm to St. Nicholas’ Church, Kilcorney. Requiem Mass tomorrow, Thursday, at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this heavenly Tuesday morning with the sun shining all around.

And I want to wish Our lovely John Paul, at the radio station, a very happy Birthday.

Our Divine Mercy devotions were held in our Parish Church on Sunday afternoon and were very well attended, with many of the congregation taking part as well as the church choir.

A notice from the local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann to say that their popular annual Feile Ceoil , comprising of competitions in singing dancing ,music , recitation ,and so on, will be held at our Community School on this Sunday Apr 18th ,starting at 12.30 sharp.

The Cullen and District Special Needs Association want to tank all those who helped in any way to make this years event the great success that it was. And are appealing to cards holders to please return all cards and cash as soon as possible.

Further to that they want to mention the Cadbury CSR Pub Quiz which will be held at the Fairfield Bar in Knocknagree on Fri. Apr 23rd , proceeds to the Special Needs fund.

Regional Report 1007 – 6th April 2010

Fondest greetings dear Listeners and I wish you all the very best on this wet ,’n calm ,Tuesday morning.

It’s great to be back with you again following two wonderful weeks in far away Nebraska ,land of Indian tribes and descendents of  so many  Irish Immigrants.

Many congratulations to Fr. Paddy O Byrne who celebrated the Golden Jubilee  of his Ordination at Lincoln, Nebraska on March 29th.where he had missioned for over forty years . It was indeed  an honour for me  to be present at this historic ceremony which saw the mighty Cathedral of that City packed to capacity. Up to a 140 priests in all attended, as did countless numbers of nuns, The Knights of Columbus and the hundreds of people to whom he has endeared himself over the years.  The popular Fr. Paddy will be further honoured by his own people here in Millstreet at a later date.

Death Notice: Denis O’Sullivan

The death has occurred on 24th March 2010 in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, of our father Denis O’Sullivan aged 84 years.
Denis was born in Ballydaly Upper on 20th October 1925.
He lived the most part of his life in Conna (County Cork), and England but returned for a short while with his wife to Kippagh in 1982.
Denis leaves his widow Kathleen, Margaret and Kevin his daughter and son. A much loved husband, father, father in law and grandfather.

The funeral will be at Holy Souls Church in Scunthorpe, tomorrow 6th April at 12:30.

Regional Report No. 1.006 (30th March 2010)

Good morning, Patricia and greetings, dear Listeners, from Millstreet in Co. Cork.   In this our 1,006th Regional Report we hear about Easter preparations, upcoming “Round the Fireside” features, LTV2 updates ….. and  there’s more – much more!

Our good Friend, Jerry Lehane of the Millstreet National Monument Committee, reminds us that the traditional Easter parade led by Millstreet Pipe Band will proceed from West End after 11.30 a.m. Mass at St. Patrick’s Church onwards to The Bridge and Main Street arriving at our National Monument  in the Square.   This highly significant Celtic Cross memorial of course was unveiled by Austin Stack in 1927 and has undergone a number of  maintenance works over the years.   The most recent restoration work has borne very impressive results.    Remembering the late Conchubhar Ó hÉalaithe  – his daughter, Nóirín, will read the 1916 Proclamation, prayers will be recited, the wreath laid and an address delivered by a significant speaker.

Good morning, Patricia and greetings, dear Listeners, from Millstreet in Co. Cork, Ireland mentioned for the benefit of our many online Listeners worldwide on the c103 website.   Following such a severe Winter, it is so wonderfully uplifting to now be experiencing the onset of Spring and a greener Ireland with daffodils beginning to appear.   In this our 1,005th Regional Report we hear about Daffodil Day, an Easter Vintage event, upcoming “Round the Fireside” features, an LTV2  exclusive, website updates ….. and there’s more – much more!

But we begin on a sad note as we remember the late Mary O’Connor of “Duneden”, Boherbue who along with the late Tadhg O’Driscoll established the very popular Millstreet Gramophone Circle some years ago.  Mary who went to her Eternal Reward on Sunday, was such a true Lady of the highest calibre who shared many musical gems with numerous Gramophone Circles from her fascinating collection of treasured recordings.    For almost thirty years Mary had dedicatedly devoted her great musical talents and sincere energy to the Boherbue Church Choir.   Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

Corkman The Corkman website has from today become a pay-per-view site. They are to charge for content per article / per week / per month. This will probably mean that we won’t be pointing you to articles of interest on the Corkman website, so both millstreet.ie and the Corkman will be worse off for this change in business strategy.

Death Notice: Margret O’Connor(née Jones), Shanaknock

The death has occurred on Friday, March 19, 2010 of Margaret O’CONNOR, (née Jones) of Millstreet, Cork.

Sent Forward for Trial in Limerick

A pregnant woman has been sent forward for trial in Limerick Circuit Court in connection with an assault on Cruises Street almost 3 years ago.

23 year old Rachel Casey with an address at The Square, Millstreet, Co Cork is alleged to have assaulted a person with a bottle on Cruises Street on the 8th of June 2007.

Gardaí served her with the Book of Evidence at Limerick District Court today (Thursday 18th March 2010)…

Death Notice: Joan Connolly (née Cronin)

The death has occurred on Tuesday, March 09, 2010 at Huddersfield Hospital of Joan CONNOLLY, (née Cronin) of Lindley, Huddersfield, England and Coolinarne, Millstreet, Cork.
Removal took place on Tuesday, March 16, from McNulty’s Funeral Parlour to St. Patrick’s Church. Funeral Mass was held on St. Patrick’s Day at 11am, with burial in Rastrick Cemetery.

Fondest greetings dear listeners dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this cold but mild Eve of St Patricks Day.

Well our Community Council Awards Social which was held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday night, lived up the all expectations. There was an unprecedented demand for tickets, with many of the committee giving up theirs to accommodate others. A wonderful four course meal was served, then the presentations and speeches went ahead, ably headed by Councillor Noel Buckley and the rest of the night was danced away to the beautiful music of the Celts. Look up the papers and our website for all the details. Many thanks to all who helped in any way to make this important event so successful and enjoyable.

Green Party Promised on St.Patricks Day

Millstreet puts its best foot forward in salute of the national feast day to acknowledge St Patrick on Tuesday. The town’s Community Council are planning a late afternoon celebration with a new emphasis placed on school participation, increased prizemoney and entertainment for young and old.

The official parade is up and away at 5pm from the Dairygold Co-Op store and continues with a formal review stand in the Town Square. A special prize will be presented for the best window display.

Millstreet Pipe Band again figure on leading the parade and it complete a hectic day after a St. Patrick’s Day recital in Ballydaly after 9.30am Mass and participating in the Killarney parade.

The Highlight of our week here in Millstreet will be the Annual Community CouncilAwards Social which will be held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday night. All tickets are already sold out ,and a gala event is assured. The Hall of Fame Award goes to Fr. Paddy O Byrne, who will travel to Nebraska later in the month ,where he ministered for many years ,to celebrate his Golden Jubilee. Other award recipients are Service to Youth, Our Youth Leaders, Service to the Community, Me Fein, Cultural Award, James Linehan, Achievement Award, Stephen O Riordan , For his Film, “(The Forgotten Maggies) Unsung Hero, Moira O Keeffe, Cullen, and Special Award.  The Sister of the Divine Jesus, in other words the Drishane Nuns.

Cullen Post Office Closes

It was children’s allowance collection day on Tuesday, and the steady stream of customers through the doors of Cullen Post Office were all wondering if it would be the last time they transacted their business in their own village.

That’s because Cullen Post Office closed on Wednesday and, as the locals wished postmistress Mary Forde a healthy and lengthy retirement, political pressure was building to ensure that the local applicant who wants to set up a replacement An Post agency in the village is allowed to do so.

Mary Forde has run Cullen Post Office for 35 years and she confirmed this week that, had the funds been available to do so 15 years ago, she would have participated in the first round of post office automation.

Niamh Kavanagh going to Eurovision Again!

Niamh Kavanagh who won the Eurovision in Millstreet back in 1993, last night won the Irish Eurosong last night with maximum votes from all the judges groups and the general public (tele-voting). She will be representing Ireland in the Eurovision 2010 in the Telenor Arena in Olso, Norway in the semi-final on May 27th and hopefully in the final on May 29th.

The Telenor Arena is actually a soccer stadium with a roof that can hold 23,000 people for a concert!

Expect to be hearing Millstreet ’93 being mentioned a lot in the run-up to the competition in Oslo. Well done Niamh and best of luck in Oslo!

Know your Noughties

Well known and well liked Millstreet man John Tarrant, who writes the Millstreet notes on the Corkman every week, is PRO for Millstreet and Duhallow GAA, as well being a high achiever in quiz circles has outdone himself again. This time he been announced as one of the 30 winners of the 2000-2009 Review Quiz which was published on the Irish Independant on December 31st last. We can only assume that he got all the answers correct which is a fair achievement. Well done John.

Lone Elderly Man Robbed while Family at Funeral

AN ELDERLY man who was unable to attend a family funeral in Millstreet was robbed last week by a heartless conman who posed as a pension officer.

The man, in his 90s, was at home alone while his family attended the funeral of his young daughterin-law who had suffered from cancer for a number of years. A ‘very professional and well dressed man’ knocked on his door and talked his way into the house at around 3.30pm. The bogus pension officer engaged the elderly man in conversation but managed to steal money from him.

The man is described as being of stocky build and was driving a silver saloon car. A Garda spokesperson at Millstreet said “the man was very professionally dressed and very professional in his approach”.

Vodafone Broadband Upgraded

Vodafone IrelandVodafone Ireland who recently took over BT Telecom in Ireland have been investigating bottlenecks in their broadband networks. Millstreet (along with other towns) was identified as slowing down considerably in the evenings (too many pictures on millstreet.ie 😉 ), and has been upgraded in the last few days to sort out this problem. So if you are with Vodafone and have noticed that the internet has been slow in the evenings, then hopefully your problems have been sorted. Now, if we could only get broadband to outlying areas like Rathcoole (which have big problems at the moment), it would be of benefit to all.

Millstreet Matters – 4th March 2010

A RECOGNITON for total commitment and excellence in community, sport, culture and enhancing the life of others is evident on the selection of the Millstreet People of the Year Awards.

Friday, 12 March, in the Wallis Arms Hotel, will present an opportunity for Millstreet to honour people valued and appreciated not only by their own community but beyond.

The categories and recipients are Hall of Fame, Fr. Paddy O’Byrne; Service to Youth, Youth Club Leaders; Cultural Award James Linehan; Achievement Award, Stephen O’Riordan; Service to the Community, Eily Buckley and Unsung Hero, Moira O’Keeffe from Cullen.

 To try and re-generate interest in the society it was decided to do away with team competitions and have 4 single competitions at the courses listed below.It was also decided to have a golfer of the Year and the overall winner from the 4 competitions will receive The John Cronin Memorial Trophy.

 Again we appeal to people when entering competitions can you please pay the entry fee on entry, collection of money is becoming a big job at outings and the committee have enough to do without this extra job.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on  the second day of March and it is foggy and cold, but very calm.

A very successful Coffee morning was held by Particia Guerin at the GAA Hall on Friday last, which raised   over € 1,500, Patricia , who is well known for her great work on behalf of the needy, would like to say many thanks to all those who  helped her with the venture  and supported it.

The money will be shared between The Church Restoration Fund, The Haiti Fund and the fund for Baby Jacob. Well done Patricia.

Death Notice: Conchubhar Ó hÉalaithe (Neil Healy), Drishane

Tomorrow (Sunday) night his Funeral will arrive from Dublin directly to the Church no time as yet announced (8:15pm). His Funeral Mass, as Gaeilge, will take place at St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet on Monday, 1st March at 11.00 a.m., and after that he will be taken to the crematorium in Ringaskiddy.

We are very sorry to hear about the passing of Conchubhar Ó hÉalaithe – he was such a gentleman and one who really began the Twinning concept – Seán

Millstreet Matters – 25 Feb 2010

PRIZES don’t come any bigger than national titles and Millstreet had reason to be jubilant on their All Ireland Scór na nOg triumph in Athlone on Saturday night.

Taking outright honours at instrumental music, team members Donal Linehan, Alanna Barry, Kelly Murphy, James Linehan and Cian Dennehy didn’t just live up to expectation with their performance but exceeded it with a spectacular flourish and enjoyed by the capacity attendance.

The column has much more on the All Ireland win, the forthcoming Horse Fair, Scór na bPaistí, Senior Scór, new Pilates Classes and a number of other items.
