Nova Kakhovka in Ukraine, was taken by the Russians on the first day of the invasion. For the first couple of months Professor Igor Serdyuka still did his job as the director of a 500 student school. But in early June the Russian occupiers told him to start teaching the Russian curriculum. When he refused, they threw him in jail. He escaped the war with his wife Tatyana, and they have found refuge in Millstreet, but he still organises teaching the students online.
Sky News visited Millstreet recently and interviewed the couple, which can be watched on SkyNews.com.
The first Ukranians arrived into the Green Glens on Wednesday evening, and the RTÉ news covered their arrival. Pascal Sheehy interviewed some of the Ukrainians, as were Community Council members Noel Buckley and Margaret Bourke. The RTÉ coverage can be seen in the article: ‘Now, I feel safe’: Ukrainians fleeing war arrive in Ireland
We thank Presenter, John Greene for advance information on this Sunday evening’s programme – 9th May 2021 at 7pm on C103. (S.R.)
On this week’s edition of ‘Where The Road Takes Me’, John Greene continues his conversation with former BBC & ITV presenter Denis Tuohy.
We return to a deserted ranch in California to hear more stories about his meeting with the Charles Manson Family.
And, if you’re part of a TV crew that’s suddenly regarded as being unwelcome, there’s one big thing to remember if you’re asked to leave or forcibly ejected.

Maggie Molloy brought this week’s house hunting couple on Cheap Irish Homes (RTÉ1) to Ballydaly to see a cottage that’s been unused for a few years. Of the houses they were shown, they said it was by far their favourite, for the space provided, and also probably for the price also. You can still see this week’s episode on the RTÉ Player.
There’s a new upcoming property series on RTÉ series will feature Irish Instagram sensation Maggie Molloy of @cheapirishhouse, who is taking her property hunting skills to the next level by helping singles/couples/families who may be struggling to get on the property ladder.
Maggie has Millstreet connections, and she shot her promo video (above) for RTÉ around Tullig and Mushera, so maybe the scenic views of our locality may have helped in RTÉ taking on the project!
For now RTÉ are looking for people from all over Ireland to apply and take on the challenge. If you’re interested in taking part, GO HERE for details. [read more …] “Cheap Irish Houses”
Congratulations to Linda McAuliffe and the students of the Kerry ETB Radio Broadcasting and Digital Journalism Course who came away from the IMRO Awards with a Gold in the Short Feature Category, and a Bronze in the Digital & Social Innovation Category, for their innovative feature on the sounds of Kerry, called ‘Cluas Ciarraí’.
Their series, about the sounds and soundscapes of County Kerry, was inspired by students Barry O’Donnell and Dara Ó’Cinnéide – who are both visually impaired and who successfully completed the course this year.
Millstreet was also represented by Joanne O’Riordan who was nominated for her podcast on RedFM, and Ed Smith was there also with TodayFM.

Marie Kelleher got special mention on Ireland’s Got Mór Talent last evening where she sang Hopelessly Devoted to You (Grease, 1978) for the judges. As she says herself, she’s better at the singing than the talking, and a mighty performance too. Marie and her sister Breeda make up the Diamond Sisters and we’ve known for years how good they are. Watch her performance on Ireland’s Got Mór Talent on the Virgin Media Player (from 18:49 to 20:13) (here) [read more …] “Marie on Ireland’s Got Talent”

Sincere congratulations to Breeda O’Leary of West End, Millstreet who appeared in a superb feature on this Friday’s “Today with Maura & Dáithí” on RTÉ1 television. Accompanied by daughter, Julie and grand-daughter Neila (who also appeared on the excellent programme) Breeda was interviewed by Dáithí and came across as a true natural on television. Breeda recalled in a moving interview how she first met her late husband Neily and we saw some splendid family photographs during the chat. Then the magnificent makeover was coordinated by a highly professional Team revealing the outstanding success at the end of the Show. We thank Breeda for the two images below which were recorded after the Show. The programme may be viewed on the RTÉ Player (Breeda appears at the very start and the very end of the programme). It’s only a few months since Eily Buckley starred in Daniel and Majella’s Road Trip, but now she’s in the latest SuperValu advert on our TV’s, in our cinemas, and anywhere else there’s a screen, and she’s back driving a bus full of children again, like she did for many years ! To enter into the Ultimate Croke Park Sleepover, one had to send an audio clip to TodayFM, talking about a theme that was announced on the Dermot & Dave show each morning … in true GAA commentary style. John sent us his commentary on the theme “buying cones for the family“, which got him into the final in Dublin on Friday, which he ultimately won:
