Seán Radley travelled to Dublin today to the inauguration of our new President Michel D Higgins in Dublin Castle. Though he was not in the castle, he was interviewed outside by an RTÉ News crew, stating that he had come up from Millstreet, Co. Cork for the inauguration. The interview later appeared on the 1 o’clock news, and may be on the news bulletins later this evening also. For the next week, you’ll be able to see the short interview on RTÉ Player, and it’s about 13:30 in the video.

Forgotten Maggies on TG4
The long awaited documentary on the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland (The Forgotten Maggies) is set to get its Irish premier on Wednesday 20th July 2011 TG4 @ 9:30PM. It has taken five years to get the documentary screened and I hope everybody in Millstreet can support the work Steven O’ Riordan and others have done to help these women. It is the only Irish made documentary on the subject matter and fear not, it’s completely in English. So if you are not an Irish speaker you don’t have to worry. The documentary is compelling, shocking, honest and extremely forthright in its testimonies. Let everyone know it’s on and for anyone interested the trailer is below.
Climbing Kilimanjaro for kids
Comedian Alan Shortt who grew up in Millstreet was part of a documentary on RTE last night which tracked the progress of a group of Irish people that climbed Kilimanjaro for the Climb for Kids charity, raising money for Crumlin Childrens hospital last year.

JD’s a bad boy in Ros na Rún
Actor JD Kelleher who grew up on Minor Row is in the news for his character on the hit Irish language soap Ros na Rún. The long-running TG4 series ended the season on a disturbing note this week, as a little girl went missing just as radio station boss, Breandan Mac Gearailt (JD Kelleher), was exposed as a paedophile.
“It was a very challenging part and I welcomed that,” JD told the Herald. “He’s a very morally questionable character and that’s very interesting for an actor. “I never lost track of the fact that it’s drama so I wasn’t disturbed, I was just excited to play such a morally ambiguous character. I don’t know how viewers will react, it’s a very difficult subject. [read more …] “JD’s a bad boy in Ros na Rún”

What a difference a day makes
It’s been a strange day on the politics front. This morning out sitting TD and Minister for Enterprise Batt O’Keeffe was being praised in the Irish Independent as being top dog in Munster, and quoted in today’s Examiner that he was going to contest the coming election. By lunch time news broke that he was quitting politics altogether after yesterday denying that he was considering quitting. (Locals knew there was something up when the Fianna Fáil convention in Millstreet last Monday to select candidates was cancelled at short notice).
Maybe he realised like the rest of the cabinet that since the chance of him getting into office the next time around was getting slimmer as the days went by and [read more …] “What a difference a day makes”
Millstreet President
While discussing Presidential candidates in the upcoming Presidential Election (which is due to take place next October), on TV3’s Midday Show yesterday (10th Jan 2011), on which Aileen Hickie (formerly of the Square) was appearing as a guest, it was suggested (TIC) that maybe the next President could come from Millstreet!: you can see the crossfire from 32:00 minutes in the video:
Elaine Crowley: Aileen, do you have any particular preference?
Aileen: … I’d like a southerner, we’ve had a northerner for the past 14 years, no harm to move it back to the other end of the country.
Fiona McLaughtlain: Now when you say southerner, do you mean Cork specifically?
Aileen: Well I wouldn’t if it was mind Munster, I’m not saying Cork, but Munster. Not just anyone from Millstreet … I mean if they were from Munster, I’d be happy enough. [read more …] “Millstreet President”

RTE Player goes Worldwide
This article is aimed at those that are out of Ireland (and there are more and more of ye these days) .
RTÉ Player which for the last six months has allowed viewing of TV programs online for three weeks after they have been aired on TV, but which was limited to Ireland, has now gone worldwide. So, if you’re in London, New York, Sydney, Hong Kong or Milan, you will be able to catch up with what is happening back in Ireland.
On millstreet.ie in the past it has been frustrating to point to a video on RTE, but those abroad have not been able to see it. Hopefully this now solves most of those problems
Obviously due to copyright issues it will not show foreign produced programmes, but will show most of the home produced programmes.
And, also new is the 24 hour online RTE News and current affairs channel.
