Caherdowney wind farm nearly finished

Energia is finishing the build of its latest wind farm, Caherdowney, located just south of the Quarry on the Macroom road The €14m wind farm at Caherdowney in Co Cork will have the capacity to produce 9.2MW of renewable power from its four wind turbines, according to the independent energy supplier.

The turbines being used in the build are Enercon E70 models with a hub height of 64.5 metres and a rotor blade diameter of 70 metres. The company said the Caherdowney site was chosen because of its high average wind speeds. It said once the wind farm is fully operational it will be capable of powering up to 9,200 homes. “Aroma Café” Continues A Millstreet Tradition at The Square

Dining in style at Aroma Café, The Square, Millstreet. This new setting continues a very fine tradition at the Square in that there was once a Restaurant located in exactly the same area managed firstly by Nan Creedon and later by Bina Kelleher and Chriss. Below we share a selection of images we captured on a visit to Aroma Café in February 2012. We thank Noreen O'Donoghue and Staff for such a warm welcome on our visit. A very comprehensive feature on the Aroma Café was recently published in "The Corkman" newspaper. (S.R.)

In the past there were quite a number of catering establishments at The Square including Bina Radley’s, Mary Ellen Radley’s, O’Callaghan’s Hotel (now the Wallis Arms), Bina Kelleher’s and just further down the [read more …] ““Aroma Café” Continues A Millstreet Tradition at The Square”

Japanese quake hits profits at Alps

The impact of the Japanese earthquake will hit profits this year at Co Cork-based manufacturer, Alps Electronics.

The Japanese-owned firm employs just under 500 people in the Millstreet-based plant, and managing director Brendan O’Shaughnessy said yesterday that the earthquake has affected the company’s bottom line this year.

Accounts just filed by Alps Electric (Ireland) Ltd show the firm’s revenues increased by 10% from €58 million to €64m in the 12 months to the end of March last year. [the above is an excerpt from an article in the Irish Examiner – 3rd February 2012]

Aidan McCaul 30 years in Business in Millstreet

Aidan McCaul’s hardware & furniture shop is in business for 30 years this year in Millstreet. It started in Minor Row in June 1981 in the old Hibernian Dance Hall (owned by Kit Radley who was a  grocery shopkeeper next door) after Buckley’s Stores went out of business.  A year later it moved to the Square after Aidan purchased former executive offices of Buckleys, gutted them & turned them into a shop. For the past 30 years the business has continued with Aidan & Tim Long present throughout that time. In later years Aidan’s son Tony has also worked in the business. [With thanks to Aodan for the article]

White Country Crafts

from Ruth Gettings of White Country Crafts:
  • I am opening a craft shop in Kanturk which will be called White Country Crafts selling local – preferably Duhallow -crafts. I am looking for quality suppliers – small or large volume – to sell their crafts there. I would provide up to one section of slatwall 8′ x4′ and suppliers could put their own small table in front of that with whatever display and promotional material they want. You wouldn’t have to be in the shop personally!!! I would be asking a small weekly fee or small % which ever suits people best. Planning to open on 2nd August or if not certainly 11th August for my birthday!! Obviously cant tell how it will go or promise anything with regard to sales etc but the shop is on the main street right opposite pedestrian crossing so good footfall.
  • I only intend to have one supplier of each craft unless widely different. I myself make crochet blankets, knitted hats and a few baby cardigans and small cards.
  • I have 3rd party insurance but would be up to each supplier to insure goods – or not – as they wish.
  • If you are interested or have any questions or suggestions please email me at <email> or call (029) 58843 or (086)3183961.

Nutritious Nibbles

The Southern Star Newspaper today carries an article on Eleanor Leahy of Nibbles:

If you want really fresh, wholesome and divine cakes then visit Eleanor Leahy’s award-winning artisan bakery stall. You can buy her produce at the markets in Macroom, Ballincollig, Bishopstown, Mallow, Rathmore and even the Limerick Milk Market. Amazingly she also runs the café and bakery in Millstreet, Nibbles Food Emporium.  To be honest I have no idea how she maintains the passion and enthusiasm she has, as well as keeping her high standards of cooking and using local top quality ingredients, when much of her baking is hand made.
