Vaughan playing for Cork VEC Senior Hurlers

Michael Vaughan from Millstreet Community School was playing for Cork Vocational Schools in the Senior Hurling Championship Quarter-Final last Saturday (Jan 30th 2010) in what proved to be yet another defeat to Kilkenny. In at corner forward he managed a point in a game that was to-ing and fro-ing throughout.

… and Cormac Heffernan were both on the mark in the 45th minute, sweeping to 1-14 to 3-5. Michael Vaughan did reply a minute later but the dynamic had decisively changed. Then, after a melee in their defence …

February 1st: St. Bridget’s Day

Today is first day of February, and as always is the feast day of St Bridget one of the few Irish saints.

St Bridget's Cross

We grew up knowing about the St. Bridget’s Cross and the confusion in trying to make it correctly, or to make the biggest and best one. According to tradition a new cross is made each Saint Brigid’s Day (February 1), and the old one is burned to keep fire from the house … but of course customs vary by locality as some people keep them for years.

Another local tradition is that you hang a cloth outside for the night before St Bridget’s day, and rub it to any sores that you get during the year, and it will help to make the pain go away more quickly.

Give it a go at making the cross: If you missed the demonstration last Friday in the Library, just read these instructions on how to make a St Bridgets Cross. You will of course need about a dozen rushes to make one. There’s loads of rushes in the fields this year, and the farmers will only be too be glad to see you taking them (in fact take all of them if you want!). Best of luck.

Collection for Haiti this Weekend

The Haiti earthquake occurred on Jan 12th 2010. Currently there are 170,000 confirmed dead and three million affected by this catastrophic event. As there hasn’t been a concerted effort to raise funds for food/shelter/medicine and everything else that these devastated people need, there will be a church door collection at all the masses this weekend (30th & 31st Jan), and all are encouraged to give generously as the affected people had nothing beforehand, and have even less now. From the parish newsletter last weekend:

Bishop Bill has decided that it would be good to afford parishioners of the Diocese an opportunity to respond to the current situation in Haiti. Next weekend there will be a special Church Door collection for those who wish to donate. This money will be sent to Trocaire who are working on the ground with Caritas International

Millstreet Matters: Concern for Ballydaly National School

RATHDUANE NATIONAL SCHOOL: The future of Rathduane National School is under the spotlight as parents and friends go all out to save their local rural based primary school base.

Concerned associates from the greater Ballydaly catchment area are hoping to offset dwindling numbers.

Rathduane National School is an excellent example of a primary school establishment that flourished and adapted to the changing fortunes of time. It has been and, hopefully to parents and friends, will remain a focal point for learning in their small community.

This is a sniplet from the Millstreet Matters column on the Corkman website, which also contains all the other news from the Millstreet area.

Schools Closed until Thursday 14th January

Schools Closed until Thursday 14th January

The Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe TD, has told all primary and post-primary schools to close on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week due to the bad weather.

Minister O’Keeffe took the decision in the interest of the welfare of school children.

The Minister took the decision following a meeting today [Friday] of the Government’s emergency planning group and in the context of the poor weather outlook for the coming days.

Minister O’Keeffe said: ‘I took the decision to close all schools based on my concern for the health and safety of school children in these very challenging weather conditions.

‘I considered, in particular, the forecast for snowfall on Sunday and Monday which will cause further disruption.
