Thanks for supporting the Language and Culture Night

A word of thanks to all those who came along to support the Language and Culture Night that was held in Millstreet Community School on Friday 12th May 2017.  Fourteen nationalities from three continents were represented! Thanks also to those who prepared food for the evening.  It was a night for celebrating cultural diversity which will be remembered for a long time.

Millstreet Development Education Group receive acknowledgement for their efforts

A group of students from Millstreet Community School who formed the school’s first development education committee during their Transition Year in 2015/2016, received certificates in recognition of their efforts from Garda John Crowley. They had organised a range of activities within the school and local community. These included a climate change petition, the ‘thumbprint’ campaign, and a climate change seminar for local post-primary schools in Green Glens Arena. They also taught lessons to students on Fairtrade and the UN sustainable development goals.

The night will be a chance to celebrate the many languages and cultures represented in our school and in the Millstreet area.   Admission is free.  All are welcome

Urgent accommodation request for retreat team o/n Wed. 29th March

The 1st students at Millstreet Community School have a retreat on Thursday 30th March 2017 in Millstreet Parish Centre.  The retreat will be run by NET ministries, who are based in Co. Donegal and this will be the tenth year they’ve been to Millstreet.

Thanks to those who have already volunteered to host members of the retreat team.  All seven girls (18-25 year olds) have been accommodated.

We have not managed to find acommodation for the five boys (18-25 year olds) yet.  If anyone was in a position to host them that would be great. They need to be accommodated in a pair and a group of three.

If there are families able to give them accommodation and a simple meal on the evening of Wednesday 29th March (they’ll be arriving in Millstreet at about 6.30pm), and breakfast on Thursday 30th March, that would be great.  They need to be back at the Parish Centre for between 8.00am or 8.15am on the Thursday so they can get ready for the retreat.  If you can help please contact Millstreet Community School on 029 70087  as soon as possible. Thanks for supporting the Fairtrade Coffee Morning in aid of MS Ireland

Thank you to everyone who supported the Fairtrade Coffee Morning in aid of MS Ireland that took place on Tuesday 28th February in Millstreet Parish Centre.  A total of €486 was raised.

The event was organised by the Millstreet Community School Transition Year Development Education Group

International Support for IHCPT Lourdes Project 2017

The official presentation of Patrick’s very generous support including his letter in which he had also offered to provide a further prize for the Draw on the night – an item from Kentucky and its very famous equestrian tradition. Úna and Dervla will be writing to express thanks to Patrick (who is to revisit Ireland in July 2017). Lourdes Table Quiz at The Wallis Arms – Fri. 3rd March 2017 @ 8.00pm

The Table Quiz will take place on Friday 3rd March 2017 at 8pm in The Wallis Arms.  

This quiz has become an annual fundraiser to help 5th Year students from Millstreet Community School who are going on pilgrimage to Lourdes with the Irish Pilgrimage Trust, to pay for their travel and accommodation. Dervla Murphy and Una Buckley  are the students going this year and they will be student helpers with group 12.

Tables: €40/team of four.  There will be a raffle.  Everyone is welcome to take part in what has become a great community event in support of the students.

“… Equally topical, and timely, is the project by three students from Millstreet Community School, in Cork. Katie Hickey, Robyn Sheehan and Elmarie Kelleher were all inspired to take up sport by women role models, although that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for the men, too.

Cork Penny Dinners collection at Millstreet Community School – thank you

The Millstreet Community School Transition Year Young SVP group would like to express their thanks to all those who contributed items to their collection in aid of Cork Penny Dinners.  Aida Costello came to the school on Tuesday 20th December and some of the TY students involved, with their teacher Mrs Mary Randles, helped bring the substantial quantity of items donated to her car.  The students would like to express their thanks for your support.

Thank you for supporting the Bake Sale for student helpers going to Lourdes 2017

Thanks to all of you who supported the cake sale held on Saturday 10th December 2017 in Millstreet Parish Centre to support Una Buckley and Dervla Murphy who’ll be going to Lourdes as helpers with the Irish Pilgrimage Trust at Easter 2017.  €508 was raised.  Thank you.lourdes-bake-sale

Thanks to everyone for their efforts with regards to the Team Hope Shoebox appeal 2016

Over 450 boxes were brought to Millstreet Community School from Rathcoole National School, Millstreet Boys National School, Presentation Convent National School Millstreet, Knocknagree National School, Kilcorney National School and by pupils of Millstreet Community School.

Additional thanks go to members of the local community who also brought boxes down to the school in support of the appeal. Thanks also go to the members of the Millstreet Community School Transition Year ‘Young SVP’ group and their teacher Mrs Mary Randles for co-ordinating the whole enterprise so successfully.

Trad for Trocaire at Millstreet Community School – thank you!

Thank you to everyone who attended the Trad for Trocaire event that took place on Friday 7th October 2016 in Millstreet Community School.  It was an evening of fine traditional music, song and dance.  Well done to all the students who participated.  A total of €297 was raised to support Trocaire’s work.  Thanks for your generosity.

Trad for Trocaire – Millstreet Community School, Fri. 7th Oct. 2016 (TONIGHT) @7.30pm

A Trad for Trocaire event will take place in Millstreet Community School library on Friday 7th October 2016, starting at 7.30pm.  This will be a chance for students from all year groups to share their traditional Irish music, song and dance skills with the wider community.  It will also be a chance to raise money to support Trocaire’s work among some of the poorest communities in the world.  Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend.  There will be a collection for Trocaire during the event.

Millstreet students contribute to article on climate change – Earth Day 22nd April 2016

Three Transition Year students from Millstreet Community School attended a Climate Change Challenge Weekend organised by Trocaire in November 2015.  Kaytlin Murphy, Kate Buckley and Noelle Healy joined with 25 other students from around Ireland to explore the causes, effects and actions needed to tackle climate change.  To mark Earth Day, Ellen Donnelly (Youth Education and Outreach Officer with Trocaire) has published an article which features extensive contributions from Noelle and Kaytlin.  You can read the article by clicking on the link below:

‘Make your Mark for Climate Justice’ at 6.30pm Mass in Millstreet on Sat. 12th March

pull-up2-1000pull-up1-1000A Transition Year RE class has been working on a project relating to climate change over the last two months. It is called ‘Make your Mark for Climate Justice’. It is inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si in which he called on all humans to play an active part in caring for the planet. The project is based on a campaign run by SMA Wilton Justice and Peace office, which involved people making a pledge to make a difference in their everyday life, for example, by turning off the tap when cleaning teeth, unplugging phone chargers when not in use, and not leaving electrical equipment on standby. As a sign of their pledge, each person was invited to place their thumbprint on a specially prepared card that they could then bring home as a reminder. A small group of TY students from Millstreet Community School will be inviting parishioners in Millstreet on Saturday 12th March at 6.30pm Mass to do likewise.

Fairtrade

Millstreet Community School will have the pleasure of welcoming Jose Omar Rodriguez Romero to speak to students, staff and invited guests on Friday 4th March as part of Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 (29th Feb. – 13th March).

Mr Romero, who is known as Omar to his friends, is a guest of Fairtrade Ireland and he has a number of commitments during his stay so the school is delighted that he has been able to fit Millstreet into his busy agenda. Omar is a 4th Generation coffee producer, coffee lover, and resident of the village of Capucas, San Pedro de Copan, Honduras. He says Fairtrade is important, “…because it’s a scheme that is in the hands of small farmers and has a very positive economic, social, and environmental impact on the lives of the producers and the wider community”.

So what is Fairtrade? For many years our school has promoted the purchasing and use of products that have received Fairtrade certification. For products such as coffee, bananas, chocolate, tea, sugar, flowers, cotton clothing and wine to receive certification some strict criteria need to be met. When a product carries the Fairtrade Mark it means it was produced according to international Fairtrade standards. These standards ensure Fairtrade products are socially and economically fair and environmentally responsible. Key standards include the payment of a minimum price and a premium. For most Fairtrade goods there is a Fairtrade minimum price which is set to cover the cost of sustainable production for that product in that region.

Millstreet Community School is working towards becoming a Fairtrade school in 2015/2016 because we feel that it is only fair that the people who produce what we eat, wear and use should get paid enough to live on and have a chance to improve their lives. A Fairtrade school is one that has made a commitment to supporting and using Fairtrade products.
