Since 1962, groups of helpers and children with special needs have travelled from all over Ireland on Easter Sunday and participated in a unique week in Lourdes. Together with members of the HCPT-Pilgrimage Trust in the UK, over five thousand pilgrims enjoy this unique experience every year.
The three 5th year students from Millstreet Community School who will going to Lourdes as helpers with the IHCPT – Irish Pilgrimage Trust for a week during their Easter holidays, are organising another cake sale to raise money to help pay for their travel and acommodation, and for the organisation itself. It will take place on Saturday 9th February 2013 in Millstreet Parish Centre after the 6.30pm vigil Mass. Katie O’Callaghan, Deirdre Kelleher and Denise Cronin are looking forward to their week in Lourdes, and will be busy, along with family and friends, baking for the cake sale, which luckily takes place the week before the start of Lent.
The girls are also preparing for the Table Quiz which will take place in the Community School on Friday 1st March at 7.30pm. For more information on both events, contact John Magee on 029 70087.
A talk for Lent will be given by Rev. David Armstrong (retired Church of Ireland minister) at Millstreet Community School on Mon. 25th February at 8pm.
The theme will be The personal cost of reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
Admission free. Contact John Magee (Chaplain) 029 70087 for details.
“… all Rev Armstrong did was to go to the local Catholic church on Christmas Day and offer greetings to the congregation. For that small gesture, he faced a sectarian revolt in his own congregation, and ended up being drummed out of town. The pusillanimous leadership of the Presbyterian Church offered him no support whatsoever, and he couldn’t find another Presbyterian congregation in the whole of Ireland willing to [read more …] “Lenten Talk: The personal cost of reconciliation in Northern Ireland”

We thank teacher, Chris Horan for the following superb update on the tremendous involvement of Millstreet Community School with the currently running prestigious BT Young Scientists Exhibition at the R.D.S. in Dublin. Millstreet maintained its remarkable record in qualifying for the finals in the RDS in January. This year’s project involves research into an “Algorithm for ranking Gaelic Football Teams”. The team will investigate ranking formulae in other sports and then devise a method most suited to Gaelic Football. They intend analysing 5 years of results in both league and championship and will give each win a points score based on several criteria. This will be perfectly placed to facilitate an open draw seeding process which would be needed prior to an open-draw championship. Up to 2,000 projects vied for the final places, and with just over 500 qualifying, it is already a big success. Best of luck to Nathan Harman, Seán O’Callaghan and Darragh Hickey in their research and a big thank you to the Community Council for their continued support to the school’s Young Scientist initiative. Joan Ankettell, Boherbue who used to work at the Avonmore Electrical Co. in West End, Millstreet provided Maree Healy, Cloghoulamore, Millstreet with this very interesting school class photograph of 1936 taken in the Presentation Secondary School, Millstreet. Joan is seated in the front row to the extreme right (Her name appears under her). We believe that Gobnait Twomey also appears in the photograph. Maree and the website team would be very grateful of identification of the various people in this quite excellent photograph by any of our many Millstreet website visitors. Many thanks to Joan and Maree for making this fascinating picture available to us to share with all worldwide. (S.R.)
