Community website for Millstreet, Co. Cork, Ireland
Congratulations to Nicholas J. Buckley from Millstreet, a juvenile cyclist with Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club on coming in the top 5 in his under 12 category in Greenmount 3-week-league in Limerick Racecourse. Congratulations to all those who competed in the league.
Our juvenile Racers were in Greenmount, Limerick Racecourse once again on Friday last competing in the third and final round of a three week league. Well done to all our competitors and in particular those starting out, who completed competitively for the first time during the three weeks (Abaigh Dennehy and Jamie Kelly).
The first round of the Kerry County Road Race league took place in Beaufort on Thursday last with a number of strong performances including Denis O Connor and Ben Murphy finishing in the Top 6 of the scratch race which included the top adult talent in the county. Aidan Morley and Dinny Murphy made the top six in the Under 14 race with Kate Murphy, Sean P Fleming, Keenan Dennehy and Nicholas Buckley doing likewise in the Under 12 race. A special mention to Ciaran Finnegan who took a nasty fall in Beaufort which will keep him out of action for a few weeks. The second week of Fermoy Cycling Club Hennessy Cycles Summer League (for both adults and juveniles) was on Tuesday last, with rounds on every Tuesday for the Summer months. Thanks to all the parents who supported the club in travelling to the races over the past few weeks.
Training for Juveniles interested in either leisure or competitive cycling continues every Saturday at 9am.
Well done to all members who cycled the scenic Ring of Beara on Saturday. Some enjoyed it so much that they are already committing to next year’s event. Last Sunday morning’s club spin had two groups out both cycled a 100km. Our “couch to Ring of Kerry” group are well on schedule for an epic day on the day of the event.
The Sliabh Luachra Club Sportive takes place on 30th June next with 3 routes to choose from – a 105km or a 75km challenge, following the same route as last year and a family focussed 20km route. The cycle starts at 9am from Teach Iosagain Rathmore – plenty time to get the training in yet!
Well done to everyone who cycled the Humpy 100 in Killorglin on Saturday. A challenging route but always a good day out. Good turnout at the club spin Sunday morning. We had three groups out, something for everyone. Well done to our “Couch to ROK” group. They cycled 80 km via the County Bounds.

Our juvenile Racers were in Greenmount, Limerick Racecourse on Friday last competing in the first round of a three week league. This is a great opportunity for kids to get involved in racing in a safe traffic free environment using the 2km track outside the race course. We were represented in all age groups with Abbey Dennehy taking to the track for her first race at under 10 level. Well done to all our competitors. Keenan Dennehy, Nicholas Buckley and Kate Murphy (3rd) featured in the Under 12 race with Daniel Bradley, Aidan Morley(3rd) and Dinny Murphy (1st) in the Under 14 event. Finally Ciaran Finnegan (3rd) and Ben Murphy (1st) took on the under 16 event. Well done to all the participants and good luck over the coming two weeks as the league points are accumulated to determine the overall positions. Congratulations to Ben Murphy on making the six man U16 Irish team for next week races in Shrewsbury, UK. Hard luck to Amy Fleming on missing out on the U14 girls Irish team for next week due to a crash last week that put her out of Kanturk which was last selection race. But watch this space she will be back……. The Fermoy Cycling Club Hennessy Cycles Summer League starts this week and will every Tuesday night for the Summer with races for adults and Juveniles. Well done to all the Club members, young and not so young, who took part in the Twin Peaks challenge organised by Killarney Cycling Club on Sunday last and well done to Killarney for organising such a well-run event and some club members did the remembering Zoe cycle in Abbeyfeale.

The club spin took on the Nadd Windmillls, always a challenging route on Sunday last. Well done to our “Couch to Ring of Kerry” group, they cycled their first 70 km and enjoyed the scenery from St John’s Well on Mushera Mountain.
Busy weekend for the Club racers with the Kanturk Three Day on over the Bank Holiday weekend. The juveniles were first off on Saturday morning with a stage race on the Freemount /Newmarket/Kanturk loop followed by a Time Trial in the afternoon. Sunday was a further stage race on loops of the Kanturk /Mallow Road loop. This race attracts the best underage talent in the country to what is a well-orchestrated event by O Leary Stone Kanturk Cycling Club. Sean P Fleming was the top unplaced under 11 in two stages with Ben Murphy winning the final under 16 stage on Sunday morning in three way sprint up Hospital Hill in Kanturk. Well done to all the juveniles who took part and special mention to Amy Fleming who took a nasty fall on the first stage Saturday morning but was back on Sunday to shout on her teammates. In the Adult section Anthony Tancred had a very popular 3rd place in the first stage of the A4 Race with Richard Cleverly finishing 5th on the TT stage and 7th overall in the overall General Classification on the A2/A3 Section. All in all a very strong weekend for the club in Kanturk. Congratulations to Nicholas J. Buckley from Millstreet who is a Member of Sliabh Luachra Junvenile Cycling Club, who collected his trophy for competing in The John Drumm Cup cycling race in Currow. All members had a fantastic race yesterday morning Sunday morning 28th April.
Many thanks to the people of Millstreet for their generous contributions at our Church gate collections Saturday evening and Sunday morning, it is very much appreciated.
A very exciting Easter weekend in store for the club with SLCC tackling Ras Mumham – a four day event covering the toughest terrain Kerry has to offer.
Best of luck to the team of Richard Cleverly, Donie Kelleher, Johnny R O Sullivan along with guest riders Richard O Brien (Blarney CC) and Tom Shanahan (Limerick CC).
Denis O Connor and Dan Murphy’s are heading to Gorey for the Easter weekend riding as part of a Munster Selection Team.
Young Denis O Connor continues his rich vein of form, with a 3rd place finish in last Sunday’s Donal Crowley Memorial A3 race in Blarney. Denis was in a group of 4 that got away in atrocious conditions and was pipped by two O’Leary Stone Kanturk riders in a tight sprint finish.
Well done also to Richard Cleverly who came 10th in the A1/A2 Section of the race.
The juveniles headed to Drogheda last weekend for the superbly organised Ras Na Nog. A three stage event scheduled over 2 days with a HQ in Bellewstown Racecourse. Amy Fleming and Ben Murphy finished in the top 10 overall in their respective categories while Kate Murphy was 3rd overall U12 (Girl).
Overall the SLCC riders performed very well with a number of top 10 finishes.

A big congratulations to Nicholas James Buckley age 10 from Millstreet, competing in his first Road Race in Dungarvan last Sunday morning. He was cycling in the under 12 event, and had a very compelling race. Nicholas is a member of Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club.
Well done to Denis O Connor who finished 4th and Dan Murphy who had a top 20 finish in the Des Hanlon Race held in Carlow at the weekend. This race attracted the top talent in the country and the lads hard work over the winter months is now paying dividends. The juveniles made the long journey to Coalisland Co Tyrone this weekend for the Youth Qualifying races. Amy Fleming came 4th in U14 girls competition, the width of a tyre denying her a podium spot. Ben Murphy attacked all day and finished 9th overall in a hugely competitive U16 qualifier. Kate Murphy was second in the Girls under 12. All roads lead to Dungarvan on Sunday next with Juveniles/Juniors and Adults races on the card. Well done to all the club members who took part in the SRAC Sportive in Tralee last Saturday and in doing so conquered the Conor Pass it’s now only 15 weeks to the Ring of Kerry so now is the perfect time to kick off your plan and build the miles up gradually. New members always welcome to both adult and juvenile section of the club – learn to enjoy a great sport and gain some new friends – For further information contact 087 7023562 or the club Facebook page.
Well done to Donie Kelleher, Johnny R O Sullivan, Dan Murphy and Denis O Connor who competed in the North Tipperary Wheelers open Road Race last Sunday in Nenagh. Denis was on a number of breaks throughout the 120 km race and finished 7th overall, a very commendable performance.
The juveniles enjoyed a tough training session on the Outdoor Velo Track in Kanturk Saturday morning, a great facility to have in the locality.
With the weather improving the Leisure Sunday spins are taking off with up to 25 heading out on various distances last weekend. Next weekend the Juveniles are travelling to Coalisland to complete in the PJ Logan races with some of the adult members planning to undertake the SRAC Atlantic Challenge a tough 135 km trip around West Kerry.

Ireland’s number one cycling event – The Rás Tailteann will pass through Millstreet tomorrow Thursday. Stage 5 is from Glengarriffe to Mitchelstown, so it is due to come in the Macroom Road, turn right at the Square, and onto Rathcoole and Banteer, on tomorrow at about 12:30pm. There are 153 riders taking part, so the roads will be closed by Gardai as the race passes through. If you’re in town, come out and cheer them on as the whizz past.
Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club was established in July 2012 with the juvenile section of the Club commencing in 2015.
Juveniles are the long term development for our Cycling Club. We are currently recruiting new juvenile members to join our Club. The juveniles will need to be in 5th or 6th class in National School or in Secondary level education. We have a number of experienced adults trained by Cycling Ireland in foundation coaching who will coach these new members.
Our plan for 2018 is to commence coaching the new members with a 4-6-week training block in a local national school ground. During this period our new members will learn various bike skills that will ensure they are confident, safe and courteous cyclists when on the road. After several weeks of training we take the kids to leisure events locally (in the Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club Minibus) to challenge themselves at longer distance and with a little bit more experience we will participate in competitive races for those who wish to do so.
If your New Year’s resolution for 2018 is to cycle the Ring of Beara, Ring of Kerry or simply want to take up cycling to get fit-Sliabh Luachra Cycling club is starting a couch to Ring of Kerry programme for all levels of cycling abilities.
The programme will start mid January, it will include 8 to 12 weeks of spinning and also bike skills sessions before hitting the road.
We are holding an information night for anybody interested in starting the programme on Friday 5th January 2018 in Teach Iosagain Rathmore at 8 pm

Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club handed over proceeds from the Tour of Sliabh Luachra 2015 to the matron of Millstreet Community Hospital, Margaret Collins. The money will be used to purchase beds, mattresses and a garden bench. We were treated to a delicious raspberry roulade, cakes and a welcome cup of tea during our visit to the hospital.

Andrzej may have gone a little extreme on burning off a few extra calories after Christmas, but while being a bit wet and muddy, i’m sure it was loads of fun going up and down Clara with his bike.
Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club
has postponed the draw for their fundraiser
in aid of
their Juvenile Club
to the 1st of April 2016.
The reason for the postponement is that there are other fundraisers
in the locality and we are conscious of local people supporting a lot of them this side
of Christmas and we do not want to pursue them again so soon.
Fair play to Connie who is one of a hundred cyclists doing the Tour of Munster this coming week:
“On Thursday 6th of August I will be taking part in the Tour de Munster charity cycle which starts in Waterford and takes in the 6 counties in Munster over 4 days and 600+km, finishing in cork city up Patrick’s Hill (cant wait for that). This is in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland and I hope people can give a couple of € for this great organisation. Please feel free to visit mychrity.ie to donate or click on the make a donation.”
The closest the race gets to Millstreet is Killarney on the Saturday, and Macroom on the Sunday. [read more …] “Connie’s Tour de Munster 2015”
