Remembering Billy Coleman being Crowned British Rally Champion 50 years ago back in 1974

It’s hard to think that Millstreet Rally Legend Billy Coleman was crowned British Rally Champion back in 1974,it is therefore fitting to just remind ourselves 50 years later of what a great achievement that was in what was a Premier Rally Championship in Europe at the time.

Billy was Irelands Top Rally Driver back in the 70`s and 80`s and amongst his best achievements was as already mentioned winning The British Rally Championship in 1974 in his Ford Escort Mark 1.

Billy also scored victory on The Circuit of Ireland 3 times in 1975,1976,and 1984 as well as finishing 4th overall in the 1985 World Championship Rally Tour De Corse which was one of the toughest challenges back in the day.

Billy was also crowned Irish Tarmac Champion in 1984 and finished 3rd in The European Rally Championship in 1979 and has won many Irish Rallies over the years including the likes Cork 20,Donegal and Killarney Rally of the Lakes Events.

Billy is still up there as one of the greats and from that great achievement back in 1974 50 years later we salute one of the finest Irish Drivers to grace the Rally Stages both here at Home and Worldwide.

T|he Event comprised of a 3×3 Stage format resulting in 9 very challenging Stages laid on by Tipperary Motor Club. There was success for Millstreet’s Sean Moynihan /MacKierans in their Ford Escort Mark 2 who came out on top of the Class 12 Results after leading the Class from the very first stage of the day, while another Local Crew in the form of Colin Philpott/Declan Casey competing in a Suzuki Swift emerged victorious in Class 23,while Derry Long swapped from the driving seat over to the Navigators Seat for this Event and guided Colin Roche in his Toyota Starlet to 1st in Class 11R, the Rally was won by Josh Moffett from Monaghan in a Ford Fiesta WRC who was in turn followed home by Donegal Man Declan Boyle in a similar Car with Moffett having a winning margin of just 7 Seconds after a hard days competition. Roy White was the top Tipperary competitor and he went on to finish 3rd overall also aboard a Fiesta WRC with Dromtarriffe Man James O`Brien as usual occupying the Co-Drivers Seat for White, so another good weekend was had for all the local Competitors who were competing in Clonmel. Great Performance by Local Rally Crew at The Donegal Rally

Local Rally Competitors Derry Long along with his Co-Driver Declan Casey who both hail from Kilcorney competed in the hotly contested Junior Category of the Donegal Rally over the weekend, the Crew were competing in a Honda Civic and at the end of the Event they finished a very strong 6th overall and 3rd in Class, there was some strong competition in the Junior Rally and this result now puts Derry Long into second place in the Junior Section of the Irish Tarmac Championship which he is contesting, the result is all the more creditable given that this was the first time the Crew made the long Journey to Donegal for to compete in the Rally which for Junior Competitors comprised of 3 tough challenging Stages repeated twice which included the famous Fanad Head and Atlantic Drive Tests on the final day of the 3 day Event on Sunday, the Junior Section was won by Jason Black in a Toyota Starlet who pushed Jordan Hone in an Opel Adam into 2nd place by just 1.9 seconds at the end, other local interest was in the form of Ballydaly Man Liam Moynihan who was co-driving for Desi Henry in an R5 Skoda, they were running strongly in the early stages of the Main Rally but had to retire due to a Technical Problem, the Rally was won by Donegals Manus Kelly for the 3rd year Running in a Subaru Impreza WRC who was followed home by Sam Moffett in 2nd place in his R5 Fiesta who finished ahead of his Brother Josh Moffett in 3rd place in a similar Car,this result means that Josh Moffett retains the overall lead in the Tarmac Championship.(Photos by Alan Noonan and Declan Casey)

Class Success for Local Crews at the Killarney International Rally of the Lakes

There was success for 2 local Crews last weekend at the Killarney International Rally of the Lakes which was the 3rd Round of the Irish Tarmac Championship,Sean Moynihan driving his Ford Escort Mk2 co-driven by Liam Brennan came out on top of Class 12 and finished in 9th place overall in the National Rally, this was a repeat performance from the Crew when they achieved an identical result 12 months ago on the 2017 Event, there was also success for Denis O`Brien co-driven by Michael O`Riordan in there Opel Corsa who had a great Rally and at the end of the 2 day Event they had a convincing win in Class 10 and like Sean Moynihan  this was also a repeat of there success on this Rally having also won Class 10 on the Event 12 months ago,Derry Long/Denny O`Riordan had a great Run in the Junior Rally to finish 8th overall and 5th in Class while Pat Sheehan in his Renault Clio had had no luck this time and retired after 6 Stages while performing strongly in his Class,Victory went to Donegals Manus Kelly in a Subaru Impreza WRC with Robert Barrable finishing behind in 2nd place in his Ford Fiesta R5 with Desi Henry who was co-driven by Ballydaly Man Liam Moynihan finishing in a fine 3rd place overall in there Skoda Fabia R5,the Rally was held in mostly favourable Weather Conditions over the 2 days and used some famous Stages like Molls Gap,Healy Pass and Caragh Lake. Denis Moynihan Wins the Killarney Historic Rally

Congrats to Denis Moynihan on his victory on Saturday in the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally. He edged out another local man who had led early on – Mark Falvey by twelve seconds. OnThePaceNote.com interviewed Denis directly after the last stage and it can be seen on their video (from 2:40-3:20). Denis said:  “It’s very special, any time you win is special.  Especially in Killarney, I suppose I’m not that far away from here originally – Millstreet. The effort my brother John, Sean, and AnnMarie put in to make sure the car was ready – they did a fabulous job, and Ger on the notes and Dan and Mark servicing and everything, it was a real family affair It’s great for every one of us, it’s fabulous.”
