Millstreet Matters 18th Feb 2010

Ballydaly is a community that holds a strong identity and sense to its name. Through its many organisations down through the years, Ballydaly has maintained and developed the area as a vibrant community.

Behind Ballydaly’s vibrancy is its Community Hall — that’s the hub centre to local life. And when the Hall reached its 50th Anniversary, friends and associates convened to honour the special occasion.

Through Chairman Tom O’Sullivan and Secretary Ritchie O’Connor, the Hall remains in active use and splendidly kept. The foresight to Ballydaly Hall surfaced on the endeavours of a committee coming together to construct a meeting place.

Cullen’s golden jubilee of rebirth

FIFTY years of gaelic games was acknowledged at a celebratory function by Cullen GAA in the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney on Saturday night.

When the Duhallow Board was set up in 1933, a GAA Club was formed in Cullen, the first President was Dr. Pat O’Callaghan, who twice won Olympic gold medals. Success came early to the club on capturing Duhallow Junior Football titles in 1936 and 1939.

During the war years, Cullen GAA fell into decline. However in 1959, Cullen GAA to re-establish itself as a dynamic outlet within its community. At times, success has been lean but with excellent playing facilities and a flourishing juvenile structure, the fortunes of Cullen GAA came on leaps and bounds.

Current chairman Dan Dennehy explained the second coming of Cullen GAA stemmed from a Vocational School in the Village, one of the teachers had three All-Ireland medals with Cork.

Millstreet Matters: 4 Feb 2010

MILLSTREET Taekwon Do confirmed their growing status on a run of success at the Munster championships hosted in Tralee.

Set up 15 years ago, Millstreet is a well established club with many students training under Master Dalton with over 10 years.

Master Don Dalton as the Club Instructor is one of Ireland’s best known martial artists and is the driving force behind one of the country’s largest organisations, the Irish United Taekwon Do Federation (IUTF)

“Cleanaway Smurf” wins in Clonmel

"Cleanaway Smurf" the Grace Bruton Champion Bitch Stakes at the National Coursing Championships in Clonmel 2010, part owned by Finbarr O’Connor, Millstreet.

She ran at Clonmel last year also, under the guidance of Con O’Connor Ballydaly, but didn’t fare so well then.

Duhallow Senior Scór Results

Congrats to all the performances by Millstreet in the Duhallow Senior Scór Friday night Jan 29th at Kanturk Golf Club. Success for Millstreet was in the Question Time (John Tarrant, Jerry Doody and Pat Sheehan) and in the Novelty Act (Cian O’Mahony and Jerry Doody). Runners up spots went to Conor Linehan in the Solo Singing, and Conor Linehan + Mícheál Gleeson in the Instrumental Music.

Vaughan playing for Cork VEC Senior Hurlers

Michael Vaughan from Millstreet Community School was playing for Cork Vocational Schools in the Senior Hurling Championship Quarter-Final last Saturday (Jan 30th 2010) in what proved to be yet another defeat to Kilkenny. In at corner forward he managed a point in a game that was to-ing and fro-ing throughout.

… and Cormac Heffernan were both on the mark in the 45th minute, sweeping to 1-14 to 3-5. Michael Vaughan did reply a minute later but the dynamic had decisively changed. Then, after a melee in their defence …

Rathcoole Rovers B 2 Los Zarcos 1

In another hard fought derby encounter Rathcoole sent their Millstreet visitors home pointless after a late goal in the AUL Murphy’s League 3A on Sunday morning last. This was always going to be a hotly contested affair but it was Los Zarcos who looked to have the upper hand early on. They went into the lead after 10 minutes when Martin Murphy connected with a corner only to see the ball come back off the crossbar, and bounce of at least one defender before ending up in the net.

Millstreet Instrumental Music Group, Winners of the Munster Scór na nÓg in Mallow 31-Jan-2010

Millstreet Camogie Club annual social

Millstreet Camogie Club held their annual social on Saturday 16th January 2010 in the Wallis Arms Hotel.  V.I.P’s on the night were the victorious      Under 11 team who won the Avondhu Under 11 league in 2009.  The “YOUNG” and the very young bopped the night away to the brilliant sounds of D.J. Chris Cleary gets the tackle in too late

TADGH Collins grabbed a hat-trick as Millstreet claimed their place in the second round of the Murphy’s Irish Stout County Cup after a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Knockraha at Pigeon Hill on Saturday in the first round of the County Cup.

It was a devastating display by Collins of what clinical finishing is all about.

e proved throughout to be too-hot to handle for the Knockraha defence and aside from his hattrick he also did some tremendous work on the left before setting up Brian Kelleher for number two.

Donal Coffey Running

Carrauntoohil May 31st 2009

In this weeks Regional Report, Eily mentioned that Donal Coffey finished 2nd in the Puck Warriors 10K Jingle Run held in Killorglin recently (28th Nov 09)  in a time of 34:58 (full results here).

Donal never seemed like an much of an athlete when he was younger, but he has been posting some really impressive results in the last 4 to 5 years.

Not alone does he do road running, but he also partakes in mountain running around Ireland, which is organised by the Irish Mountain Running Association. His results here have also been really impressive finishing on average 4th for all races in 2009 and 7th in 2008. One seasoned athlete told me many times that you’d have to be crazy to run up and down mountains! For the rest of us, it can be a challenge even to walk to the top of these mountains and back, which makes running them at top speed seem all the more impressive.

Kilbrin prove Millstreet’s nemesis in the Championship

John Tarrant takes a look back on the hurling year that was in Duhallow GAA

THE second part of the Millstreet GAA review focuses on hurling where a number of teams came up short in both league and championships.

Dwelling on the JAHC, a powerful surge in extra time allowed Kilbrin pull away from a gritty Millstreet to secure a 422 to 5-15 win in a dramatic first round played in Banteer. From a hotly competitive and a pulsating encounter, the pace and the tempo of the game was frantic from the outset and with 46 scores in total registered confirmed those in attendance received value for money.

Thereafter, Millstreet flattered to deceive where a sharper Freemount possessed too much firepower for Millstreet on recording a 3-12 to 2-12 triumph in the 2nd round qualifier played in Kanturk. At the end of the hour, Millstreet yielded to the greater stickwork and greater combined play of Freemount.

Mark Ellis on Cork Senior Hurling Panel

The Cork Senior Hurling panel to play UCC on Sunday at 2pm in Páirc Uí Rinn in the Waterford Crystal Cup, has been published by the Cork GAA, and it includes our own Mark Ellis.
It looks like a development squad because none of the the main stars are included, but it is definitely a step in the right direction.

The full panel of players can be viewed on the Cork GAA Website, and the Examiner carries the team with a report also.

Update Monday 18th Jan: Unfortunately he didn’t get a run out on the day as a disappointing Cork side fell away totally in the second half to lose by 1-12 to 1-7.

A year of highs and lows for our Footballers

THE first part of the Millstreet GAA review focuses on  Millstreet GAA clubs Football season 2009

Millstreet GAA hosts its AGM in Millstreet GAA Community Hall on this Friday night commencing at 8pm. Looking at a football review this week, the JAFC campaign began on a 0-11 to a 0-7 defeat to defending holders Cullen. There was no disputing that Cullen were worthy winners yet Millstreet paraded six minor players over the hour and delivered a creditable showing.

Subsequently, Millstreet cantered clear of Newmarket 4-16 to 0-9 in the second round. Once Millstreet got into their stride upon the resumption, they possessed far too many aces in the pack for a second string Newmarket combination.

County Scór na nÓg Finals Winners

Congrats to the Millstreet Instrumental Music group (Donal Linehan, Alanna Barry, Kelly Murphy, James Linehan, Cian Dennehy), and the Cullen Novelty Act (Clare Sheahan, Sinead O’Keeffe, Colin O’Leary, Seamus Fleming, Sean Murphy, Elaine Herlihy, Michael Herlihy) which won their respective categories at the Permanent TSB Cork County Scór na nÓg Finals which were hosted in the Eire Og GAA Pavilion, Ovens on January 3rd.

The Munster Scór na nÓg semi finals in the Eire Og GAA Pavilion, Ovens on next Saturday night (Jan 9th) at 7pm. Participating teams come from Cork, Kerry and Waterford. (Rescheduled to Jan 17th because of the bad weather)

Duhallow Junior B Finals

Tonight, Millstreet are playing in the Duhallow Junior B Football League Final against Lyre in Mallow at 8pm (under lights). Also, on this coming Sunday, the club play in the Duhallow Junior B Hurling Championship Final in Castlemagner.

update 21st Dec: The Junior B Footballers endured in a thrilling extra time victory over Lyre. The Hurling final was deferred because of the snow, ice and frozen pitch.

U21 Hurling Championship: Millstreet 2-4 0-15 Kilbrin

A CONTROLLED display helped Kilbrin overcome a battling Millstreet in the Duhallow U21 Hurling Championship semi final played at a bitterly cold Meelin last Sunday.

A chilly wind cut through the proceedings yet at least, the hurling warmed the dedicated patrons viewing the fare on offer. And at the end of the hour, Kilbrin hurled with far greater passion and purpose.

Millstreet put together a decent account of themselves and though goals brought them back into contention, Kilbrin held a facility to respond, their self belief unshakeable to sway matters.

GAA: On the pitch round up

The bad weather has held up completion of the GAA schedul in Duhallow. These are the competitions that Millstreet are still involved in:

  • U21 Hurling Championship: Kilbrin and Kanturk must play in order to face Millstreet in the semi-final. (Update 30th Nov: Kilbrin 0-15 Millstreet 2-4)
  • The JBHC is down to the semi-finals, Dromtariffe take on Millstreet while Banteer encounter Kanturk.
  • There are three teams involved in the Junior B Football League, Lyre bettered Meelin in a semi final replay to secure a passage to the decider against Millstreet
  • Also, the MAHL final is awaited between Croke Rovers and Millstreet

Millstreet were defeated by Freemount in the Junior B Football championship last Monday Night by 3-8 to 1-6

Youghal defeat Millstreet U16s in County Championship

YOUGHAL withstood a determined finish from Millstreet in a keenly contested County U-16 ‘B’ Football Championship semi final played at a rainlashed Mourneabbey last Monday.Weather conditions were anything but suitable for the game and great credit must go to both set of players for serving up a high standard of play given the wretched rain that prevailed in the opening half. At the end of the hour, there could be no argument about the outcome, Youghal were far, the hungrier side, their application superb and in general, the East Cork boys emerged much more enterprising in the prevailing conditions.
