Tour of Ireland Passing through Aubane

The video shows Dennis van Winden in first position followed by Mark Cassidy and finally the main group. with thanks to Bernard Crowley

As we approached the category two climb at Musheramore at 133km, the dynamic of the race began to change irrevocably. Astana hit the front of the peloton and began to peg back the leading duo. The gap was reduced to 6 minutes 57 seconds.

Here van Winden made a dash for it, dropping Cassidy on the ascent. On the way down the other side of the hill, van Winden had a two minute lead. An Post Sean Kelly Team Niko Eeckhout abandoned here; the climb just too much for the veteran Belgian.

Cassidy did hold on to second going over the summit at Musheramore, with Matt Wilson, last year’s King of the Mountains taking third place, adding crucial points in his hunt to retain his jersey this year.

Jay Thomson was fourth adding more points to his impressive ride in the Tour overall.

Van Winden took maximum points at the sprint at Millstreet followed by Cassidy, Andrey Grivko of ISD – Neri and Jason McCartney of Team Saxo Bank.

Tour of Ireland 2009 is Coming!

On Saturday August 22nd at approx 1:20pm, one hundred and twenty of the worlds best cyclists will pass through Millstreet in Stage 2 of the Tour if Ireland. The cyclists will be coming from Rylane, over Mushera, into Millstreet, out on a loop over Curragh mountain, back to Millstreet, and on to Killarney.

The leading rides are seven times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong who brings his Astana team to Ireland for the first time, and six times Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish (Columbia – HTC), who won three stages here last year, and an amazing six stages in this years Tour de France.

Of course roads will be closed for some short time, but hopefully lots of people will come out and cheer on the cyclists, like previous times the race passed through, when it was known as the Nissan Classic.

Rathcoole Rovers FC

Without doubt, this has been the most successful season ever for double winning Rathcoole Rovers. This memorable year they managed to do what they had been trying to do for the past 8 seasons and went and won 1A.

For Rathcoole home form was a major factor, along with a few wins on the road. Every member of the squad played his part but special mention though for top goalscorer Tadhg Browne, who in a fine season, bagged 33 goals in total, 23 of them in the league.

Millstreet storm past Newmarket

MILLSTREET turned on the style in the second half to dispose of Newmarket in the second round to the Kanturk Credit Union Duhallow JAFC played in Boherbue on Monday evening.

Once Millstreet got into their stride upon the resumption, they possessed far too many aces in the pack for a second string Newmarket combination. Newmarket held their own for the opening 30 minutes but after a promising start, they lost their way.

Millstreet claim county U12 football champions

mill_u12fc.jpg

MILLSTREET added a glorious chapter to its underage ranks on capturing the County U12 B Football Championship by virtue of a thrilling 5-9 to 2-9 victory over Thomas Russells of Kilshannig in Mallow last Sunday night.

At the end of a glorious run, Millstreet emerged as a polished combination, their ferocious desire for victory confirmed on an outstanding team performance and greeted with rapturous acclaim at the full time whistle.

All through the contest, Millstreet put together a terrific work ethic, an assured defence formed an unyielding division, midfield established a firm control and the attack reaped a handsome return of scores.

The determination and the inspiration of the team was matched only by the enthusiasm of the team’s willing band of supporters that saluted Millstreet team captain Thomas Walsh on landing the county trophy.

Delirious supporters welcomed home the new county kingpins to a victory parade. Millstreet Pipe Band led a parade from Minor Row to a reception in the club’s Community Hall.

Club chairman Noel Crowley told those present that everybody was proud of Millstreet’s achievements and the feats of the side had passed their expectations. He thanked the players, management, parents and supporters for their huge encouragement.

Divisional Secretary Steven Lynch congratulated Millstreet on a fantastic win for the club and Duhallow. He applauded the work generated on the promotion of gaelic games in coaching, schools of excellence and summer camps.

The triumphant Millstreet panel consisted of Dylan O’Leary, Alan Murphy, Eric Barrett, Patrick Dineen, Danny Buckley, Sean Og O’Connor, Billy Cronin, Cathal Crowley, Darren Kiely, Shane Hickey, Thomas Walsh, Maura Ellen O’Connor, James Linehan, Alex Lee, Killian Linehan, Bill Kelleher, Danny O’Callaghan, Darragh McSweeney, Conor Corkery, Niall Murphy, Padraig Moynihan, Colm O’Leary, James Cronin, Sean O’Keeffe, Tomasz Ozaist, James O’Connor and Jack Brady.

The team management featured Noel Crowley, William Kiely, Niall Buckley, Jerry Pat O’Leary and Con Linehan.

Millstreet take Duhallow u12 Football title

A sharper Millstreet regained the Duhallow on a merited win over Kanturk in the Duhallow U12B Football Championship Final played in Newmarket.

From a competitive encounter, Millstreet didn’t have matters all of their own way but a better balanced team effort landed the ultimate spoils. However weren’t it for a series of magnificent saves in both halves by Millstreet ‘keeper Dylan O’Leary, Millstreet might well had been troubled early in the game.

Defences dominated a low scoring opening twenty minutes before Millstreet proceeded to raise the tempo. Darren Kiely kicked a trio of points before Shane Hickey netted a goal to allow Millstreet enjoy a 1-4 to 0-2 advantage at the break. Kanturk resumed with renewed urgency yet they had reason to regret some wasted possession and the heroics of Dylan O’Leary between the Millstreet posts thwarted their efforts.

Millstreet held the facility to respond and a delightful chipped goal from Thomas Walsh appeared good enough for Millstreet to record a comprehensive win.

Kanturk never gave up and a late flourish yielded a pair goals that came too late to alter the outcome.

Millstreet lined out as Dylan O’Leary, Alan Murphy, Eric Barrett, Patrick Dineen,
Danny Buckley, Sean Og O’Connor, Billy Cronin, Cathal Crowley, Darren Kiely,
Shane Hickey, Thomas Walsh, Maura Ellen O’Connor, Bill Kelleher, James Linehan, Killian Linehan.

U14 Hurling win Duhallow title

Mill_MHL-400.jpg

Millstreet captured the Duhallow U14B Hurling championship title by virtue of a 4-10 to 1-5 triumph over Newmarket in Lismire.

From a game of two contrasting halves, Millstreet sprang into action upon the resumption to dictate matters. Little separated the sides in the opening spell, an early Newmarket goal answered by Robert Kelleher that helped to keep Millstreet in the frame to trail 1-5 to 1-4 at the break.

With the backing of the fresh breeze, Milstreet proceeded to dominate matters and two goals in quick succession from Robert Kelleher and Lyn Murphy confirmed their superiority.

There was no denying Millstreet upperhand and the issue was put beyond doubt from a fourth goal netted by Daniel O’Brien.

Millstreeet lined out as Eoin O’Callaghan, Donal Lenihan, Gavin Sheehan, Sean O’Donoughue, Beircheart O’Connor, Alan Murphy, Cian Dennehy, Lyn Murphy, Paul Sheehan, Mark O’Donovan, Diarmuid Fraser, Tomas Sheehan, Tadgh O’Callaghan, Daniel O’Brien, Robert Kelleher. Subs. Donal O’Connor, Rory O’Connor.

Minor hurlers enjoy County success

Mill_u14-400.jpg

Millstreet savoured the taste of victory in the Co. non exam minor hurling league 12 aside final by overcoming Courcey Rovers 2-10 to 1-6 played in Ovens. The contest was delayed 15 minutes owing to rain sheeting down on the proceedings. Despite the slippery conditions, there could be no disguise the superiority of Millstreet.

All through, Millstreet hurled with the greater confidence and that was good enough to keep the Carrigdhoun side at bay. Owing to the conditions, scoring was at a premium early on and the prematch cloudburst ensured the early exchanges were bereft of free flowing hurling.

However Millstreet’s cause was boosted in the 9th min on a probing delivery by Michael Vaughan saw Michael Murphy get a stick to flick to the Courceys net.

A follow up point from Barry O’Reilly confirmed Millstreet’s stature. Courceys did open their account yet all the initiative stemmed and drive stemmed from Millstreet. They kept a foothold on the game thanks to the tenacious play of Dean Desmond, Tim Fitzgerald, Mark Ellis, Michael Vaughan and Darren Sheehan.

Two points in quick succession to Vaughan confirmed Millstreet’s supremacy yet they were jolted on a Courceys goal. However, Millstreet bounced back immediately and though Michael Vaughan was denied of a possible goal, Michael Murphy was on hand to steer the rebound home.

ourceys did answer to narrow the arrears 2-3 to 1-3 at the break.

Millstreet took up the running upon the resumption on quick fire points by Michael Murphy and Darren Sheehan.

Courceys attempted a comeback yet all they could show to their interval tally was three pointed frees. Territorially, Millstreet dominated and though some wayward shooting limited progress, their persistence paid off with points from Michael Vaughan, Darren Sheehan and David McCaul.

Millstreet lined out as Pa Rohan, Jamie Kelleher, Dean Desmond, Tim Fitzgerald, Mark Ellis, Liam Curtin, David McCaul, Barry O’Reilly, Michael Vaughan, Darren Sheehan, John Buckley, Michael Murphy. Sub. Tony Cronin.

Young boxers show their fighting spirit

TWO young Millstreet boxers gave it their all in a terrific campaign of fantastic endeavour only to be denied All-Ireland glory in the National Juvenile Championships. Both Seán Óg O’Connor and Eric Barrett are in their debutant season with Rylane Boxing Club and came close to securing outright honours. Seán Óg began his quest in the Boys 1 33kg grade on comprehensive wins over Jack Daly (Riverstown) and Patrick McDonough(Leeside) to capture county accolade.

And the momentum was maintained in the Munster campaign, Seán Óg to the fore in a marvellous provincial final against Patrick Doyle from Clonmel.

U14 footballers capture county féile title

Magnificent Millstreet were crowned Cork U14 B Feile Football champions after edging Killeagh/Itas in a titanic struggle in Mayfield last Sunday evening.
Millstreet supporters in the large attendance enthusiastically voiced their appreciation as Millstreet took the spoils on a narrow 3-5 to 2-7 triumph. From a marvellous encounter adorned by brilliant passages in play, Millstreet weathered a late Killeagh offensive to land the spoils.
Millstreet tore into the fray from the first whistle and seized the initiative from a well worked goal netted by Kevin Sheehan. Killeagh attempted to find their feet yet poor shooting limited their progress.
Wind assisted Millstreet were sharper and drove home their dominance on a goal netted by substitute Thomas Sheehan for Millstreet to enjoy a 2-4 to 0-3 grip at the interval. Though Killeagh attempted to pick up their game, Millstreet held their own and maintained a two goal grip at the three quarter stage.
Killeagh proved themselves battlers and a goal threw the issue wide open. Back came Millstreet and a defence splitting move saw Kevin Sheehan blast home a terrific goal.
Victory appeared to be safely in Millstreet’s hands but Killeagh weren’t done yet and a second goal rose their spirits. In the concluding minutes, Killeagh tried desperately to rescue the situation and two additional points left the minimum between the sides.
Time ran out and Millstreet stood firm to enjoy a narrow but deserved win, team captain Kevin Crowley accepting the trophy from County Juvenile GAA Chairman Tony O’Mahony. The successful Millstreet panel included Kevin Crowley, Eoin O Callaghan, Eoghan Daly, Alan Murphy, Robert Kelleher, Paul Sheehan, Donal Linehan, Diarmuid Fraser, Len Murphy, Kevin Sheehan, Beircheart O’Connor, Mark O’Donovan, Daniel O’Brien, Frank Dineen, Cian Dennehy, Rory O’Connor, Liam Cronin, Tadgh O’Callaghan, Stephen Crowley, Shane Dineen, Darragh Murphy, Donough Murphy, Donal O’Connor, Andrew Roche, Kevin Linehan and Padraig McCarthy.

Millstreet claim u16 hurling title

Millstreet enjoyed a merited 1-11 to 0-4 triumph over Croke Rovers to capture the Duhallow U16B Hurling Championship title in Millstreet.
In fairness, both sides made a concerted effort in the glue like underfoot conditions to serve up a competitive hour’s hurling in the deplorable weather.
However, once Millstreet asserted their authority midway through the second half, there was never a doubt about the outcome and it allowed Millstreet take the inaugural Dave Hallahan Memorial Cup.
At times, both sides performed best against the elements, evident from Millstreet dictating much of the opening half and highlighted on points from David McCaul and Barry O’Reilly.
Rovers attempted to retrieve the situation but it failed to halt Millstreet from gaining a 0-5 to 0-2 interval advantage.
Matters looked ominous for Rovers upon the resumption as Millstreet restarted with the strong elements behind their backs. However as a sleet shower descended on the proceedings, Crokes rose to the challenge.
And their hopes were raised on a pair of points that cut the deficit to the minimum. Millstreet had the facility to raise the momentum and the game turned in the 42nd min on a delivery by the outstanding Michael Vaughan from outfield deceived the Rovers cover to find the net.
That score helped Millstreet take control, boosted by the industrious efforts of Darren Sheehan, Barry O’Reilly, McCaul and Vaughan. And Millstreet finished at a gallop, both Vaughan and McCaul confirming their accuracy to shoot three points apiece that put the icing on the cake.

Millstreet lined out as Pa Rohan,

Minor football team land league title

Millstreet gathered a deserved 4-10 to 2-6 victory over Knocknagree in the Duhallow Minor B Football League Final played in Knocknagree.
Despite the lateness of the season, both sides requested the game go ahead. And all credit to the pair who battled through a biting cold wind to serve up an appealing encounter for the enthusiastic attendance present.
At the end of the hour, the sharper and better balanced Millstreet landed the spoils to gather compensation for a county final defeat to Donoughmore a few days previously.
Early on, Knocknagree appeared the more hungrier side and confirmed on shooting a run of points.
Both teams proceeded to miss a plethora of chances before Millstreet’s game got up and running to snatch the initiative thanks to a goal from David McCaul. Knocknagree answered positively and regained the lead temporally thanks on a goal netted.
Matters improved considerably for Millstreet, boosted by the influencial play generated by Darren Sheehan, Darren Murphy, McCaul and Mark Ellis. And Knocknagree were rocked on the concession of two quick fire goals from John Buckley that helped Millstreet to a 3-4 to 1-4 interval advantage.
Knocknagree threw down the gauntlet for the restart and their hopes brightened on a goal. But that was as close as Knocknagree got for Millstreet held key personal in the key departments to sway the outcome.
And Millstreet finished strongly, a run of points was completed by a neatly taken goal from Mark Ellis that effectively wrapped up matters.
Millstreet lined out as Denny Twomey, Dean Desmond, Barry O’Reilly, Conor Lane, Darren Sheehan, Kieran Cotter, David McCaul, Darren Murphy, Brian G Murphy, John Buckley, Mark Ellis, Garry Buicke, Michael Murphy. Sub. Tim Fitzgerald.

Kilford 1  Keim 2

Keim collected 3 points this Sunday in a close affair. Kilford had the better of the 1st half and took the lead halfway through. Keim were unlucky not to score through Ciaran Patton who went close with a shot.

In the 2nd half Keim started to control the game with good passing and Alan Burton, James Broxton, Ger Lenihan all had efforts saved. Neil Corkery was fouled just outside the box and he picked himself up to take the free kick and dispatch it to the net. With 15 minutes remaining Keim piled on the pressure and Kieran Murphy had an effort well saved. With time running out James Broxton put a ball into the Kilford box and the clearance fell to Finbarr O’Riordan who found the net with a shot that went in off the post. Keim finished out the final minutes to collect the points.
