Truly Magnificent Response to the Annual Funding of Museum & Millstreet Website

The amazing generosity of the very kind Supporters of Millstreet Museum and Millstreet Website has been superbly demonstrated within the past 22 hours when a magnificent €1,575.00 has been very kindly donated through our Go Fund Me page by 35 wonderfully generous people at home and abroad.  To reach such an uplifting target in less than one day is utterly incredible and is hugely appreciated.   It allows us to continue our work at Millstreet Museum and to maintain the Millstreet Website.   The work of Volunteers in these Projects is vital and to them we extend heartfelt thanks.  Our Go Fund Me page will remain open until the end of next week coinciding with the week of our usual Church Gate Collection which due to COVID-19 this year has been replaced by this Go Fund Me project.   Míle buíochas to All.  (S.R.)

Clonbanin Ambush Centenary Commemoration Committee Appeal

Chun ár gCairde Uile ó Duhallow agus Beyond

To All our friends from Duhallow and Beyond

The recently established Clonbanin Ambush Centenary Commemoration Committee wish to make an appeal to the people of Duhallow and beyond who would like to make a donation to our centenary commemoration fund. Our committee is a community based, non-political group of volunteers from the Duhallow and surrounding  area who wish to mark the centenary of the historical event that was the Clonbanin Ambush. The aim of the committee is to renovate the existing monument and to erect an information board at Clonbanin on the original site of the ambush on the main Mallow Killarney road. Due to health and safety regulations and in keeping with N.R.A guidelines, new structures are not permitted on the main road meaning it will not be possible to hold events on the original site of the Ambush. Therefore it is proposed by the committee to erect a new monument and information boards in the Derrinagree Church car park, which is the site supported by Cork Co Council.

The Clonbanin Ambush was an engagement between the forces of the British Empire and the Cork and Kerry Brigades on the 5th of March, 1921.  Historically, it has been recorded as a victory for the Volunteers of the IRA.

The proposed project also involves our committee producing a publication outlining this significant local event.

Eily’s Report – 14th July

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my report.

New seasons gooseberry jam and fresh homemade bread. Can you think of anything nicer? Nicer of course because of the wonderful taste, but nice also that a little bush in one’s own garden can produce such wonderful food in a matter of a few months. Raspberries, strawberries, not to mention the succulent green peas that have grown in a bucket are all yielding good returns. I planted twelve pea seeds all around the rim of a bucket full of compost and waited for them to grow, which they did and when they grew high I staked them with bamboo canes and lattice wire. They grew over six feet tall and are now hanging down with the weight of their crop. The great thing about doing this sort of thing is that people who have no more than a doorstep or balcony can enjoy the fruits of nature just as good as landowners. My crop may never see the pot but when I’m passing I can help myself to a large or small helping of lovely green peas. The magpie has taken a great liking to my raspberries. He  sizes up his target, which could be as much a four feet above him and take aim. I watched him from the window and he never once failed to land his prey. I don’t deter him. We are all entitled to our share. I have a rather interesting fruit coming on that didn’t ripen yet. It’s a cross between a gooseberry and a blackcurrant which we picked up in some garden center years ago, very tasty when its ripe.

On Tuesday, 20th May 2020 St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet was reopened as Phase One lifting of COVID-19 restrictions permitted.   Here we share nine images where we note health and safety measures are very much in place within the Church.   This reopening event was greatly welcomed.  Tap on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Thunder and Lightening

We were warned about slow moving thundershowers with lightening, and that’s what we got. For two hours there was lots of noise, lots of flashes, and heavy showers, as cold air moved in on our lovely warmth. It feels like summer is rolling in 🙂 The picture below shows the lightening strikes from 4:30 – 5pm.

“Where the Road Takes Me” This Sunday at 7pm on C103

Many thanks to Presenter John Greene for advance information regarding this evening’s C103 programme – 5th April 2020.  (S.R.)

Recorded before social distancing came to place, we revert to the Michael McCarthy story, part one of which was broadcast two weeks ago.  This Sunday evening on Where the road takes me,  John Greene concludes this two part programme.

Michael was co-founder of the Ritz Showband who were based in Bandon during the 1950s and ’60s.

While we reminisce on the golden era of the showbands on both programmes, we also hear about life afterwards.

Michael talks about his time in the motor industry, and  his concern for the environment and it’s wildlife inhabitants. It may be one small step, but by putting his money where his mouth is, he hopes that young people will take those concerns on board. Who can honestly say that mistreating the earth, hasn’t been in some way responsible for Covid-19 which has already claimed so many human lives..  [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” This Sunday at 7pm on C103″

Prayer of Protection Against Coronavirus COVID-19

We thank Pat Breen for the following wonderfully meaningful

Prayer of Protection Against Coronavirus COVID-19

Lord Jesus Christ, You travelled through towns and villages curing every disease and illness.  At your command, the sick were made well.  Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the Coronavirus, that we may experience Your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus.  May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care.

Heal us from our fear which prevents nations working together and neighbours from helping one another.

Appearing briefly to the west of Millstreet on Wednesday evening (19th Sept. 2018) we captured this truly magical sunset over Killarney Road as Ireland is relieved that Storm Ali is now passed on. Note the exquisite rays and the silver lining of the clouds to the left. Click on the image to enlarge. (S.R.)

“Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103

We thank Presenter, John Greene for the advance information on this Sunday (8th March 2020) evening’s programme on C103 at 7.  (S.R.)

On this week’s edition of Where the road takes me’, John Greene concludes the two part programme which pays tribute to Terry McCarthy, the former Dixies lead singer who died suddenly last year.

Family, friends and fellow singers will  again remember tales of a man who was comfortable singing any type of song, be it pop, ballads or opera.

Joe Mac remembers the initiation ceremony they prepared for the newest member of the Dixies in Abu Dhabi.

Eddie Fuller tells us why Terry was an ideal candidate to join Brian Callanan and the late Hugh Moynihan when his plans for the ‘Cork Tenors’ were gaining momentum.

And although he was a ‘divil’ for losing his lyrics, singer Lorraine Manley says that Terry always found them at the right moment and was a pleasure to work with.  [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

“Where the Road Takes Me” on C103 at 7pm on Sunday

We thank Presenter John Greene for advance information regarding this evening’s programme on C103 on 16th Feb. 2020.  (S.R.)

In 1921, and a few weeks before the truce, a young Jack Breen refused to leave the bedside of his dying mother and evacuate their hotel, as the IRA came to blow up the adjacent Brandy Hall Bridge on the outskirts of Castletownbere.

On this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’,  John Greene returns to the area where he was born, reared and reluctantly educated.

Close by and accompanied by an old school friend, they view the reluctant path once taken by many to Brandy Hall National School and the ruins of a handball alley which doubled as a ‘sporting centre of excellence’ for the local youth.

In the first of a two part programme, we base ourselves in what was once Jack Breen’s Hotel, now the Millbrook Bar, run by his daughter Mary.

We meet Mary’s daughter, Dr. Fiona Kelly who was voted the best rural GP in the country last year.

We hear about local born journalist and MP Tim Harrington who was responsible for bringing an end to Gladstone’s Government in the UK
