Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club weekly update

The long evenings and decent weather is providing a great opportunity for both the Couch to Ring of Kerry group and the leisure cyclists within the club to get some decent spins in, including some undertaking the Ride Dingle Sportive and the sportive in Killavullen on Sunday last. One of the key local leisure sportives is the Twin Peaks Challenge on 12th May next organised by Killarney CC.
Our annual Tour of Sliabh Luachra will take place on June 30th at 9:00am from Teach Iosagain.

A group of 12 juveniles and 7 adults took part in the 54th Annual John Drumm Memorial Cup races in Currow last Sunday. Days like this the Club bus really pays off. This was the biggest representation SLCC had at any race to date and bodes well for the future. Four of our juveniles came home with placings, Sean P Fleming, Nicholas Buckley, Amy Fleming and Kate Murphy. Keenan Dennehy had his first day out racing – we had a few mechanicals and punctures along the way for good measure – well done to John Breen and his team at Currow CC for providing such an array of events at all juvenile levels.

From an adult racing perspective it’s great to see Paudie Keane and Sean Dineen back racing in Currow. Anthony Tancred, Johnny R O Sullivan, Richard Cleverly, Denis O Connor and Dan Murphy all rode well and finished safely in their various races.

Next week the racing focus moves to the Kanturk 3 day – with racing for Juveniles and Adults kicking off on Saturday.

Preperations are ongoing for the Inaugural Sliabh Luachra CC Youth Races for Juniors, U16, U14 & U12 Boys & Girls on June 16th at at Knocknagree.

Training for Juveniles interested in either leisure or competitive cycling continues every Saturday at 9am.

Celebrating Julia’s 105th Birthday at Millstreet Day Care Centre

On Wednesday, 17th April 2019 there was a truly special occasion at Millstreet Day Care Centre when Coordinator Mary Feeley and her wonderfully dedicated Staff organised a superb Party with music by Guest Tommy celebrating the inspiring 105th Birthday of Julia Mary Murphy of Toorbonia and also marking the fact that David Barrett as well as Matthew Broe have been residents of twenty years at MDCC.  On the occasion Julia not only sang “A Mother’s Love is a Blessing” but danced and recalled memories.   On Cork Music Station this Tuesday at 10pm on “Radio Treasures” we listen to Julia’s song and hear her memories.  Here we share a selection of some 22 images recalling the recent most enjoyable event.  Click on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.) Eily’s Report – April 16th

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my Report.

The fine weather ran out for many of our weekend events here in Millstreet, but it’s a well-known fact that when the going gets though, the tough gets going. The organisers of our weekend Feile Cheoil excelled themselves in putting up posters etc. in wind and rain, to let the people know that a few days and nights of traditional entertainment was about to begin, and the gala Ceili on Saturday night at the Wallis Arms was just the place to make you forget the raging elements outside. There were winners and losers at the various competitions but the wonderful music by the popular “Conifers “, turned the Hotel Ballroom into a place of real Traditional music, and joy.

Meanwhile at the other end of Town we had an extravanza of classical music and singing provided in our beautiful St. Patrick’s Parish Church, when the mighty voices of the Duhallow Choral Society and The Kerry Choral Union joined forces to raise funds for our Local Community Hospital. In excess of 100 voices made up the cast who filled the Sanctuary to its limit. Our church took on a cathedral-like appearance filled with light and colour and atmosphere. The very large crowd was held spellbound by their enchanting repertoire which went on non-stop, for the most of one and a half hours.
