‘Rebels on the Move’

These photos represent a lot of hard work by both the staff and pupils of Presentation National School, Millstreet. Our school is decorated with flags, bunting and banners that wish the Duhallow Representatives in both minor and senior finals the best of luck.

They  began at the school gate and marched through the town, finishing at the Square in Millstreet. Here we sang ‘A Rebel’s Cry’.

Pommerit-le-Vicompte Visitors

This weekend Millstreet welcomes twelve visitors form its Breton twin town Pommerit le Vicomte for a week. Residing with host families, the visiting party are due to arrive in Millstreet on Saturday at noon. From a formal twinning in 1985, key areas of mutual interest have been developed and copper-fastened on the latest chapter, described as one of the memorable visits undertaken between the centres. Everyone who would like to join the the twinning activities is very welcome. The schedule for the week is:

  • Sat 18th 12pm approx: Arrival and lunch with host families in McCarthy’s
  • Sat 18th 2pm: Tree planting ceremony – Cork road.
  • Sun 19th: Day with the host families
  • Sun 19th 8pm: Riverdance at the INEC Killarney
  • Mon 20th: Visitors leave Millstreet on a 2 day tour

Memories Of Toots Kelleher

In Gaelic Football for Cork and Millstreet Toots Kelleher did play
One of Ireland’s best forwards when in his prime day
One never found to be wanting when put to the test
For Club and for County he always performed at his best
That he never played a bad game a remarkable feat
One jubilant in victory and gracious in defeat
In Croke Park and Killarney, Cork, Coachford and Macroom
He made a big name for himself in the prime of his life’s bloom
The spirit of the true gael the great man personified
For his ability and sportsmanship in his chosen sport he became known far and wide
In Gaelic Football circles Toots Kelleher from Millstreet Town became a household name
In the length and breadth of Ireland he knew of widespread fame
Fond memories of the man he was to this day I retain
And often in my flights of fancy I watch him play again.

Down in Millstreet

… a few hardy Down souls are determined to fly their county’s flag in Cork.
Millstreet Community School’s John Magee is intensely proud of his Mourne Mountains roots and will be cheering on Down despite his admission that he loves living in north Cork.
“They are quietly confident of a Cork victory, but I think Down will hold a surprise up their sleeve,” he said.
And despite the fact that Millstreet, Charleville, Kanturk and Newmarket are a sea of Cork flags, he has proudly adorned his car and home in the Down colours.
“It’s all in good nature,” he said…
