Corkman of the Year

Paddy O’Brien, whose mother was Nellie Long from Aubane, who has crusaded tirelessly for the elderly for over six decades, who headed up the southern division of the Irish Heart Foundation for years, and who is also the driving force behind the hugely popular Over 60s competition, one of the largest talent shows for the elderly, has been named the Cork Person of the Year for 2010. He said he was stunned and humbled by the honour.

“Loneliness is still a huge problem among the elderly and that is one reason why I continue to run the Over 60s Show in communities all over the city and county, for the past 34 years,” he said.

He told guests that he became a voluntary social worker in 1953, when as a 14-year-old, he took a summer job as a “messenger boy”, and came across extreme poverty in inner city areas.

Last Saturday in the Waterford Crystal Cup Final, Mark Ellis apparently did his chances of retaining his place on the Cork team no harm at all.

From the Southern Star – “… while half backs Christopher Joyce, Mark Ellis and Ray Ryan comprised Cork’s strongest line. Millstreet’s Ellis always looked comfortable at centre back, and, aside from Conor Lehane, he was the most impressive of the Cork newcomers overall…

So much so that the Examiner reports this morning that he has been put straight into centre-back for his first full competitive senior game when Cork play Limerick this Sunday in the league.

The death has occurred on Thursday, February 03, 2011 of Dr Anne MacCARTHY of Santiago de Compostela, Spain and formerly of Rathcoole, Cork. In hospital in Spain, after a long illness. Requiem Mass on Saturday, February 12, at 12 noon in St John’s Church, Dromagh. Burial afterwards in St Mary’s Cemetery, Millstreet.
