Forum on “Rural Ireland Looking to the Future”

A major public forum on rural Ireland will take place tomorrow in Millstreet entitled “Rural Ireland Looking to the Future”. Topics will include energy, agriculture, fishing, tourism, broadband and education. One of the big issues will be poverty: The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) are frightening: 363,000 people are at risk of poverty; 486,000 are suffering deprivation; and 138,000 are living in constant poverty — double that of four years ago.

There will be no politicians. Dr Jerry Cowley MD, Dr Brendan O’Keeffe, University of Limerick, Dr.Geraldine Mooney, Simme, of the University of Limerick’s faculty of education and health science, Dr Elizabeth Hourihane, National Citizens’ Movement representative, Claudia Kennedy, of TUI, and Maura Walsh, of IRD Duhallow, are among those who will be speaking.

It’s hoped a new working group for rural Ireland will be established following the meeting tomorrow which will take place in the Community School Hall in Millstreet from 9:30am to 7pm.

Millstreet Athletic Club news

Another great day for the club at the Cork Master and Juvenile uneven age cross country at Conna.  Donal Bourke finished in 5th position and he will go on to represent Millstreet and Cork at the Munster Even ages in Tipperary and Uneven ages in Clare in the next few weeks.  Our girls U15 team came home in 3rd position which was another great result.  The team was made up of Caoimhe O’Leary 11th, Orla Buckley 12th, Emily Ring 22nd and Shannon O’Sullivan.

The club was represented by  Tomas Cronin, Jamie Kelleher, Patrick Kelleher, Donnacha Murphy, Ethan Walsh, Ian Buckley, Eanna O’Mahony, Diarmuid Cronin, Patrick Cronin, Aoife Casey, Ellen Cronin, Maeve Buckley, Rebecca O’Sullivan, Ciara O’Sullivan, Madison Gallahue-Murphy, Aoife O’Connor, Brianna Gallahue-Murphy, Emma Lehane, Muireann Cronin, Holly Sheehan, Katie Linehan, Eimear O’Leary, Jenny Kelleher, Emma Moynihan, Dara O’Shea, Sara Linehan,.  Dan Bourke also represented Millstreet in the Master event.

Next Sunday we will travel to Castlelyons for the “B” championships

Celebrity Singer, Louise Morrissey expressed her sincere thanks for the €1,000.00 fundraised by William Fitzgerald and his dedicated team for the "Bring Jamie Home" project.  At the presentation in the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney on 28th October 2014 - from left: Barry O'Halloran and William Fitzgerald from Cork Music Station with Louise accepting the Fund on behalf of the Morrissey Family.
