Food Collection For Cork Penny Dinners

Sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to Anna’s Food Collection for Penny Dinners. We are delighted with the response.

We delivered another bootload on Saturday and the staff at the centre were amazed at the volume of food that we had for them. Their premises is tiny so storage is very limited but they assured me that they would make room for everything. We will be able to do another delivery this week thanks to the generosity of all in Millstreet Community School.

Two years ago, Cork Penny Dinners was serving approx. 150 meals per week. It now provides over 1000 meals per week so all donations are greatly appreciated.
Food collection boxes are in place in Guys & Dolls Hair Salon, Coleman’s Centra, SuperValu and Millstreet Community School. Please keep giving. We will continue to deliver the food as long as the collection boxes are filling up.

Many thanks to Mary Murphy of Guys & Dolls, Mary & John Coleman and the staff of Coleman’s Centra, Joe Fitzgerald and the staff of SuperValu and Gerard Ryan of MCS for facilitating this collection. Any local businesses wishing to donate or get involved can contact 087 6886725.

Thanks for your support!
Anna, Stephen & Aida Costello

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1246 from Millstreet.  Fondest Greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this cold and Seasonal Tuesday morning.

It’s gone past the eighth of December that means the Christmas shopping and posting  has arrived at fever pitch. December 8th was often set aside by people to write their Christmas Cards or in the days before Sunday trading it was the big family Christmas Shopping day. But times change. But getting ready for Christmas never does. In spite of all the wise things that we say we’ll do every year, we wind up doing the same things again. Getting caught at the last minute for presents, buying too much food as if it were going out of fashion and so on.

Our Community Singers  gave a wonderful recital at the Sandpit House Bar recently where they were recorded for a future program of the popular TV Program, Nationwide.

The Millstreet Development Group held a very successful two day Christmas Market at the GAA Hall on Saturday and Sunday. Where a wide range of crafts and foods and Christmas present ideas were on sale. Not least among them the new 2015 Millstreet Calendar and the Community Singers CD which is selling very well and are still on sale in many outlets in the town.

Our shops are full of gift ideas. To make it more trouble free, vouchers to suit all pockets can be got at hairdressers. Petrol stations, coal and fuel outlets, pharmacies, butchers, to mention just a few. Above all please shop at home.  And don’t forget to give the special €1 postage stamps as souveniers this year as the feature a scene from one of our Harry Clarke window in our Church.

CULLEN and DISTRICT SPECIAL NEEDS ASSOCIATION

The Christmas season got off to a fantastic start in the newly renovated and attractively decorated Cullen Community Centre on Sat. Dec 6th when the 34th Annual Special Needs Association Christmas Mass and Party proved to be another memorable occasion. Mass was celebrated by Canon Jack Fitzgerald, accompanied by Susan O’Connor, and the local choir adding to the occasion. Afterwards there was plenty of food, music and craic to pass the afternoon, including a brilliant disco with D.J. Andrew Lynch.  There was no scarcity of dancers among the guests who also contributed songs.

The highlight for many was when Dr. Casey finished off the evening by presenting each one of our special friends with a Christmas gift. It is always a wonderful day for families and carers. Despite the absence of a number of regulars, some of whom had gone to their eternal reward and others who were indisposed through illness, a large number attended. Many renewed old acquaintances, as this evening attracts a regular clientele from outside the area. Once again the committee excelled themselves in staging this event, and they would like to thank everybody who ensured that the evening was so successful. A special thanks to all sponsors, helpers and the media who promote our events.

We are indebted to the many people who have given so generously of their time, their talents and their resources over the years .

Cullen and District Special Needs Association wish all their Special Friends, their Supporters and Sponsors all the Joys and Blessings of Christmas with the best of Health and Happiness in the New Year.

(Moira O’Keeffe. Sec.)
