He enlisted in Mallow in December 1914, and joined the Prince of Wales’s Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians) – 2nd Battalion, Service no. 3563.

He had been born on 24th March 1882 in the Millstreet Union Workhouse to Joseph Byrne and Catherine (née Kelleher, and who married Callaghan after Joseph died).

The below extract gives idea of what he and his regiment had to endure at that time in January 1915:
It was on the 12th of January 1915, that we relieved the Cameron Highlanders in the trenches round St.Eloi, a place with which the Battalion will be long and honourably associated. One company moved up to the famous mound. The way led through a morass which although some twenty yards wide required an hour to traverse, for we went up to our armpits in the frightful mud and some men had to be hauled through by man force by three or four comerades. Eily’s Update 19th January

eily1

Millstreet is in a celebrating mood today as we wallow in the glory, that our beloved Sean Radley has been induced into the Irish Broadcasting Hall of Fame. How can we even control ourselves at the great news. We all know Sean as a rather shy, and humble  person. Never seeks the limelight, but works tirelessly to bring those around him into the limelight. Be it people or places. Sean was 65 on the same day as Elvis Presley, and for all those years his greatest joy was to bring joy and success to the people and places around. My feeble efforts are not capable of doing justice to the man that Sean Radley is. For his 50th birthday party I penned a poem in his honour. And this is just a verse from it:

He has a gift for everyone, and gives to all he’ll meet,
It may be someone’s new born babe or a cat going down the street.
Maybe a scene at Tubrid Well or a Mass up in Aubane,
He misses nothing on his way, where did we get this Man.
Heartiest congratulations dear Seán, on behalf of all things Millstreet.

The dull month of January is moving on and there are lots of things to brighten it up. This week on Wednesday and Thursday will see the hosting of the mighty Machinery Show at the Green Glens Arena. Running each day from 12 noon to 10pm. It’s all indoors and with free parking in the grounds.

Following the Machinery Show the next event at the Green Glens will be the Millstreet International Welcome Tour on  March 24 -28th.  Continuing    March 30 – April 3rd .
