Many towns and villages close to Cork City showed a population increase in Census 2016. In the Mizen, Sheep’s Head and Beara peninsulas the story was much different. Rural decline is a real problem here.

In this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene visits the village of Goleen on the Mizen peninsula. Here the locals joke that one of their neighbouring parishes is New York. But unlike New York, this village has already lost its Garda station, has a limited GP service and the priest is now based in Schull. The local football team who won a junior football championship last year, have since lost three of their best players to emigration, with more due to follow.
