A Garda Dance in the Star Ballroom Millstreet in the 1960s

A recent query to our Millstreet website….Does anyone recall a Garda Dance which took place in “The Star Ballroom”, Church Street, Millstreet between 1963 and 1967? Defining the job description of a fire fighter nowadays requires a little more thought. From primarily fighting and extinguishing fires, their role in protecting the public in emergency situations has expanded greatly. Road traffic collisions, chemical spills, flooding and general rescues are all in a day’s work for your local fire service.

In this week’s edition of Where the road takes me, and in the first of a two part programme, John Greene pays a visit to Bandon Fire Station to meet past and present crew members.

We meet Eleanor Tobin, Bandon’s only female fire fighter.

The crew recall their involvement with Bandon’s worst flooding in 2009.

The trauma of dealing with fatalities when on call to RTC’s (Road Traffic Collisions)

Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam fame plays in Marquee in Cork tonight (June 11th 2017), but do know the last time he played in Cork was that fantastic concert in Green Glens on October 24^th 1996, which was the first leg in Europe of Pearl Jam’s No Code Tour ?
