“Music from The Manuscripts” in Bruach Na Carraige Rockchapel

The Rockchapel based group Ceoltóirí Sliabh Luachra will present their new show “Music from The Manuscripts” in Bruach Na Carraige Rockchapel on Friday the 16th of March at 8.30pm.
This show is a celebration of the music of local musicians Dave Dan Curtin of Stagmount Rockchapel, and his father Dan Curtin, and their neighbour Dave Leahy Secondgloss Mountcollins who died in 1907
The manuscripts from all three were recently discovered, Dan Curtin’s from the National Traditional Music Archive in Dublin. They date back to before 1850. They give us an important glimpse of an older layer of Sliabh Luachra Music that predates that what prevails today, with many tunes that have not been heard or heard of for over one hundred years. Dave Dan`s and Dave Leahy`s manuscripts were donated to the Bruach Na Carraige Archive, by the late Margaret O’Brien a daughter of Dave Dans of Elsberry Missouri in the US. They also contain tunes not heard anymore. These manuscripts illustrate the high quality of our traditional musicians around Rockchapel over one hundred and fifty years ago and their ability to produce such quality manuscripts at that time is amazing.

We thank Jack Roche for this Notice of the Upcoming Musical Event.  (S.R.)

A Snow Day Tradition

It’s been a few years since we had a proper snow day in Millstreet, so when the opportunity arose on Friday there was a fine crowd, young and old, keeping up the tradition of tobogganing down the Deer Park.
They came early though. It started snowing about 10pm on Thursday, and by 1am there were a dozen or more already on the hill. And they came in big numbers on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, the melt had begun, and only two were spotted on the hill, but only for a few minutes as they obviously discovered what sliding down on wet snow was like !
